Let’s face it. The ACC had no right being in this, nor did Tennessee or Indiana. If four was too few, twelve is too many. Maybe eight should be the magic number, but we can debate that more in roughly ten days.
Thought for the night:

Nice tournament, Mickey. You should’ve just run reboots of Pinocchio, instead. Especially this line:
“A lie keeps growing and growing until it’s as plain as the nose on your face”.
The lie that the expansion era would result in better and more equitable competition is the biggest lie of all, and we’re all worse off for it.
Watching ut get the shit beat out of them is usually a happy thing for me…
Still is
Yeah, but oh how I hate Ohio State. Listening to the redneck Yankees chant SEC SEC made me want to puke.
Exactly why I wanted a meteor. The 2 most toxic fan bases in the sport.
“The 2 most toxic fan bases in the sport.”
Texas would like to have a word with you.
I had to switch over to the Sky cast broadcast. Listening to the UT announcers suffer was much better than Herbie and Fowler slobbering over tOSU.
I didn’t do the sky cast thing but… @Russ I had the sound off. I hate to say it: Herbstreit is bad but that Fowler guy is REALLY annoying. What a Rah-rah dick.
But Ohio (!) States coach in a parka hugging hisself cause it’s cold “Erks” me.
While in my heart I suspected it would be like this, that was a disappointing day of football viewing. Non of the four games felt competitive by halftime. Was really hoping for one or two underdogs to step up & play all out. They mostly seemed to play very conservatively on O & D and the moment was too big.
That quote about Franklin is the truth!
Its almost like we just need to pick the top four teams.
I watched small parts of all 4 games.
Clemson as the 12 seed was the only team that showed any fight once things went south.
When the semifinals of a 4-team playoff are rarely entertaining, there should be no surprise that the bastardized sweet 16 was an abomination. Expect more of the same in round two.
In the past, it was a bitch about the “same four teams”, moving forward, it’s gonna’ be the same bitch about the “same four teams”, the expan$ion bull shit is for timely programming, nothing more nothing less, next level expansion was somewhat necessary for the ownership ego, participation trophies are the new standard, the final game (IMO) will be UGA football vs tosu or texass, again, it’s the same teams (should UGA vs texass be in the final, i will get a fuckin’ bad case of Mickey lovin’ texass syndrome)…GO DAWGS!
Under the 4 team set up and the BCS Indiana, SMU, Clemson and UT could have won their bowl games, their coaches getting another W and 1 few L on their resumes, their Athletic Directors could brag to fans and donors about a Taxpayer Bowl or whatever championship and fans driving home would be happy.
But now their conferences get a bigger check. Worth it, I guess.
The selection committee should’ve been forced to sit out in the freezing stands to witness their work firsthand.
So the first round of committee Cinderella picks failed miserably. Now one more round for the two minor conference champs they gifted a spot. There never was nor will be under the current scheme more than 6 teams worthy of playing for the title. 8 teams uses the 6 major bowl sites (Rose, Cotton, Peach, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta) and still allows for two Cinderellas if we must insist on those. I hope the tv ratings crash in coming years, Saban becomes Commish, and sanity is returned.
And a pony.
I like this. I get the rage about FSU being left out of the 4-team playoff, but I agree that 8 teams is more than enough.
Biggest problem with the current format is the first-round byes for conference champions, leading to #1 and #2 seeds having by far the toughest quarterfinal games (both true toss-ups), and #5 and #6 getting cupcakes (favored by 2 touchdowns). Unless and until we get another round of conference realignment, this is going to happen every year.
If we must have 12 teams (and I understand that yes, a bazillion dollars for tv rights says we must), I’m ok with giving automatic inclusion for conference champions, but let’s not kid ourselves into giving conference champs a higher seed than they earned.
Yeah, I agree that if we have to have a 12 team exhibition there are better ways to do it BUT the problems you identify are baked in. This arrangement was not conceived to be the best arrangement for determining a champion it was designed to make sure every conference and Notre Dame got to feed from the trough.
The SEC and the Big Ten, who were pushing for a 12 team playoff to get more than one or two teams each in , had to get ND, the ACC, the Big 12 and the Group of Five to agree to a contract replacing the existing 4 team contract. ND was agreeable if it got a home game. The ACC, Big 12 and Group of 5 would only agree if they got guaranteed first round byes for the highest ranked conference champions.
Since this set up was the purpose of the existing contract the ACC, Big 12, Group of 5 and ND aren’t going to change the set up because fans don’t like it.
This contract goes through the 2026 playoff so there will be a new contract after that. Reasonable people may disagree with me but I believe the ACC, Big 12, Group of 12 and ND are going to give up the benefits they got.
Who is going to vote to create a commissioner of FBS college football?
I think Clemson would beat Penn State in Happy Valley more often than not. Ole Miss would beat Indiana probably 8/10 times. College football is all about matchups, and different matchups would have produced different outcomes. Who belongs in the playoff or whatever is a different argument, but there has never been a ninth best team who got screwed out of a shot at the natty.
The playoff is no longer about finding a champion. It is about money. That’s why the number is 12. That’s why the quarterfinals and beyond are played at bowl sites. They’ll go to 16 if it makes more money. They’ll change the autobids or the byes or whatever if they think it will make more money. They want controversy, they want Cinderellas to be in but never to win. They need big brands at the end. They’ve learned all of these lessons from basketball, and the beauty of the sport is irrelevant. I hate it.
Relegation!!!!!
