Them Dawgs Are Hell

Holy crap! I’ve never noticed this before. So, I’m sitting out on the dock today. It’s a slow sports day. So, I’ve got the 2024 UGA@TX game on 1 TV. I’ve got the Diamond Dawgs vs Arky in the 2026 SEC Baseball Championship on another. And, on the 3rd TV is the 1980 GA/FU game. This banner was hanging out of the stands:

I thought that was relatively new. Do any of you legacy guys remember this being a saying in the past? I do not.

  1. Long ago l remember that, and one more that said Go Big Red. Anyway it all works for me. Frosty from my home town was all on the cheers! Worked at Coach Lumpkins store at 5 points! All time Great Dawg!!!

    • Wasn’t it the traditional response to “How bout them Dawgs?” For some reason the answer back to the question didn’t catch on.

      • My understanding of the proper response to “How Bout them DAWGS?” depends on the collective to which the saying is uttered.
If, for instance, “How Bout them DAWGS?” is is hollered for the University of Georgia BullDAWG football team, the correct response is…Damn Good Team!!
However, if “How Bout them DAWGS?’ is hollered for the famous University of Georgia Mascot, the legendary line of UGA Bulldogs, the correct response is “Damn Good DAWGS!!
        Class dismissed.

    • I checked with a friend that grew up in Athens. He didn’t recognize it immediately attributing it to Squidbillies & Stet’s shirt at the parade, but when I said some folks say it’s a response to “How Bout Them Dawgs.” He said that tickled memories from maybe late 60’s early 70’s but it didn’t take. He definitely thought it was a Grizzard thing. Then I said “that dog would bite you”! and we laughed and laughed

  2. Very cool! I see Taylor County on that bedsheet banner, so maybe someone from Butler or Reynolds may know Them Dawgs is Hell!!

  3. Interesting historical footnote. They weren’t lying. 1980 UGA were hell—to cheer for, play against, and observe. Cardiac kids nearly wire to wire!

    • I rewound the Lindsay Scott play a couple of times to relive it. I was 15 years old, watching on the Curtis Mathes in the living room, jumping up and down screaming my head off when Lindsay went on his run.

      • I’ll give you a random memory: I remember watching TV in the early 80’s when they announced that Curtis Mathis had died in a plane crash. I think the company soon followed.

      • Curtis Mathes? Oooh, look at Mr. Rockefeller over here.

Yeah, I remember it from 1980. As said above, it was the response to “How Bout Them Dawgs?”

  4. Its what makes Early’s version so perfectly hilarious.

It takes both hbtd? and them dawgs are hell, combines them and adds a layer of poor English.

    Stroke of genius.

    • Same here. Usually was phrased as a question:
them dawgs are (is) hell ain’t they?

  5. I also remember it from the early 80’s. It didn’t really catch on like “how bout them dawgs”.

    • Uhh … No. However I was in the military for almost all of the 80’s on the left coast. I missed much of the word play and many of the games that are referenced here at the Refugee gathering spot. Envy is green and all I see is well watered grass on the other side of the fence.

  6. I remember it from a Grizzard piece, with the character Dorsey Hill saying, “Them Dawgs is hell, ain’t they”.
Outside of that I have no provenance.
