Kirby Smart, on the effects of the transfer portal, manages to drop a little knowledge. Color me today years old in finding out that the term coach is derived from stagecoach.
I did a little researching to make sure this wasn’t coach speak, or stagecoaching speak, and looks like he’s on to something:
In 1830 an Oxford University student needed a tutor for an exam. From there the slang term was created to describe the tutor “carrying” the student through the exam. Coach.
I can only imagine “Man you got coached through that exam” back in 1830. This moment created a slang term referring to the tutor carrying this student through an exam like a carriage or a stagecoach getting pulled by horses. Taking you from one place to another. Later this term would apply to getting tutored & carried through sports and athletic events.
So, does this mean we’re about to get the corporate logo on our uniforms that looks like this?
Something about Kirby running out of the tunnel at Texas with a double-barrel shotgun is an amusing image to me.

And in a follow up to yesterday’s Dawgs in the NFL post the Las Vegas Raiders are loading up on Kirby’s kids and their coach remarking how NFL ready they are coming out.
On the subject of corporate sponsorship, I saw/read the Texas uniform patch sponsor will be Dude Wipes. Can someone confirm, because there is a mountain range of jokes ready to write themselves.

There’s a lot that’s wrong with college football. If there’s anything that’s right, its that the right things are being rewarded now.
Buying and deploying a bunch of soft ass immature prima donnas is not going to work today.
Building a culture of toughness and LOS football is what is going to be rewarded in this era. “I love football” is coin of the realm.
Coasting, bitching, whining, entitlement, etc… are going to get you left behind. Coaches who invest in the wrong kind of kids or cater to their worst instincts are going to get left behind.
