This popped up on a Twitter timeline yesterday, and it got me to thinking…can you believe there was a time where we routinely lost to Florida, Tennessee, and sometimes Tech?
It’s been 30 years, and I don’t think my 1995 self would’ve ever believed we’d have two Nattys and be in a place where we were concerned when Georgia starts the season ranked number five in preseason polls, and not higher.
I don’t have to tell a lot of yall…these are golden times. Let’s enjoy them while they last!
To this day, I can’t help but default to my 1995 attitude towards the Dawgs, at least in the big games. I go into those games expecting us to lose. That way I’m happy when we win but my week isn’t ruined if we do lose. It’s a very Munsonian self preservation trick I learned a long time ago and it’s hard to break. My wife calls me a pessimist. I tell her I’m a realist. Before 2021, I probably had a point. Now after B2B natties, she’s probably right.
Carolina, I have the very same mindset. That being said, it has become more difficult with each passing year to convince myself that a Kirby led squad will be a disadvantage in a big game. At least we have Mike Bobo to keep our Munsonian habits strong.
Did I write that?
I could have.
I even sweat out the cupcake games because I can remember losing a couple of them over the years.
Last year’s propensity for slow starts and close shaves hasn’t helped.
It’s always reassuring to know you’re not alone. Honestly, the one season that I can remember when I didn’t stress every game was ’22.
Likewise. I’ve never been more confident of a DAWGS win than I was in ’22 when the CFP rankings put Tooth Nation #1 and us #3 the Tuesday before that game. As soon as those rankings were released, that game was as good as over.
u damn right
My thoughts exactly. I had the same mindset. I still remember those Tennessee hillbillies holding up their fingers to show how many consecutive victories over the Bulldogs.
No one ever expects the Spanish Inquisition…or Nichols State.
I had a friend compare me to Randy Quaid in Major League when it came to UGA football. The Goff/Donnan years broke me. Things were obviously better with Richt. But you always knew deep down that there would be at least one heart breaking/soul crushing loss every season where the team would look wholly unprepared that week. I still revert to that when it comes to Bama. But not so much with anyone else anymore. If you’d told me in 95 that I would live to see us on a 7-2 run with Florida where they’re leaving the stadium in the second half in most of those games, I wouldn’t have ever believed you.
Shake it off, guys! It’s a different era. We aren’t losing 4-5 games a year anymore. Our roster is top 3 and coaching staff top 5 at worst. Stacking great years now.
Do love me some #19!….GO DAWGS!!
Having not been at the table during UGA football HC hiring decisions, never blamed James Rayford Goff Jr. for his short comings…cause UGA football was at the wrong hiring tree…”They’ve gone out on a limb, there’s no doubt about it.”
Goff was put into a shitty situation. He wasn’t ready to be a HC and it showed. The man still loves the Dawgs, and I consider him a DGD for his play.
Still….”One play away Ray” was a thing.
He never had a rabbit’s foot.
I blame Dooley for those years of mediocrity.
you have a point. I wonder where we’d have been had Erk gotten the job?
It wouldn’t be Dooley Field and that’s why we got Goff! Might be Russell Dooley Field or Dooley Russell Field, but the National Championship drought would have ended well before 41 years! IMHO, YMMV!
A friend and UGA grad told me a long time ago that when we had to consider a win over the Gamecocks a highlight, we were in trouble.
Although, when Spurrier was their head coach, a victory over South Carolina had a little extra gravity.
Especially the last one!
I remember being in the stands at Historic Mark Richt Field for that game and I came away impressed at how tough Hines Ward was. Our O line wasn’t very good and he got banged around pretty hard. I guess it was kind of a preview of his playing style in the NFL.
I can believe it because I lived it. Got to UGA in 1990. Just in time so see tech share a natty. Followed later by Florida, Tennessee and auburn. It really sucked.
I was one year behind you. ’91 wasn’t a terrible year. The win over Clempson was pretty sweet. After that is when Goff’s Reign of Terror really took hold. But hey, at least we got to go to Shreveport once for the Weedeater Bowl.
At least you go to see the baseball team win a natty your freshman year.
1990 for me too. Russell Hall sucked. Bama won it ’92 I think. My girlfriend was a freshman in Tuscaloosa that year. I was so damn jealous.
Ooof… that 95 season really was a kick in the gonads.
For that matter, the whole 90s UGA football experience really perfectly encapsulated the broader Gen X experience: sucker punched, shat upon, and disillusioned, and left to self-medicate on a cocktail of grunge, booze, and weed. Or maybe that was just me?
Wasn’t just you.
