The greed of college administrators started this ball rolling down the hill. NIL and the collectives added fuel to accelerate it. The transfer portal and the NCAA’s decision to cave on the revised transfer rules have turned it into a high-speed snowball.
I hate this for college sports below the P4 level.
Marshall, App State, and Georgia Southern were three proud brands of Division 1-AA football back in the day. It was stupid for them to make the jump to FBS.
I would love to ask Erk if he believed the Eagles jumping to the Sun Belt from the SoCon was worth the money.

Since Eagle Creek doesn’t run through the sun belt conference, we’ll say Coach Russell would fire up a seegar, grab a couple of cold ones at the turn and finish the back nine in style…this is not whut we signed up for, just the sheott shoveled upon us….GO DAWGS!!
Southern Miss area resident here. We heard when Huff was hired this was probably happening as a third of the team is following him to Hattiesburg. It led to another question wondering what Marshall did to run off the coach and so many players.
There’s a good story in the Athletic about it. Apparently, the coach wasn’t happy there to start with, and the school decided not to extend his contract, so he and the staff were working on the last year of their contract this year. Somehow, they caught lightning in a bottle and won the division, but both sides knew the coach was leaving after the season. Weird all around, on both sides.

Move the Transfer portal window until sometime AFTER the National Championship game! I realize that semesters begin in January, but if you move the Transfer portal window to the END of the next semester or just AFTER the spring games, the players would have a better idea of if they will be starters next year and could make better decisions on if they REALLY want to transfer or not.
I never liked it when Georgia Southern moved up and left 1-AA (or FCS). I enjoyed pulling for them in the 1-AA playoffs every year. Now I could care less about them as they’re just “another brick in the wall” in a lower tiered conference.
Once the two super conferences are formed and all of the “big time” cfb games are played between members thereof, then the “little guys” won’t have to worry about it anymore.
They’ll be playing for the love of the game once again.
It will be interesting to see how much tv and bowl money, if any, is left for them to fight over.

If the NCAA Basketball tournament is any indication of the future, I would expect more teams incapable of playing for National Championships to be included in the playoffs. The Dollar is undefeated.
The easiest way is reform re: the transfer portal. The portal should not be open before the end of the playoffs. Its wreaking havoc on rosters and causing schools to move up their time-tables firing and hiring new coaches. They have to fix this.
You can’t wait until the end of the playoff. Schools have started by then.
I thought there were too many bowls? Kids get NIL which is better than cheap bowl swag. This is how markets work. The minor bowl suits can rethink their strategy.

I think it’s sad that the players don’t respect the storied tradition of the Radiance Technologies Bowl. I mean, sure, I guess any NIL backers could have structured incentives for bowl game participation, and sure, most of the players aren’t getting paid, and yeah, coaches do it all the time, but think about how disappointed the executives at Radiance Technologies must be after all they’ve done for these kids.
