Leaving It All Out There On the Field

Well, SEC, congrats. You made Throttled Water a national thing.

But wait…there’s more!

It just means more, amirite?

  1. Way to go, Hamburgers. I get as pissed as anyone when the officials screw the pooch (or Dawg, in this case). I would never throw stuff on the field to show my displeasure. It’s classless and dangerous.

    Be better, fans.

    • This is what you get when you combine the Gen Z entitlement mentality, the pretentiousness of being a Texas student/fan who believes they are God’s gift to football, and the misguided belief that the only reason they might lose is because of cheating thanks to months of the media’s slobbering over their program.

  2. When I was a student at UGA in the mid to late 1980s, it was a pretty common thing for students, particularly those in the upper deck, to throw waves of empty Poss plastic stadium cups during the game. We were pretty indiscriminate. We would throw them when something big/good happened or when the refs made a crap call. While this was not great for the students in the lower level, it was vitually impossible to reach the field with those cups. That’s how we endeded up with those crappy waxy paper drink cups in the student section.

    • Can confirm. Every time the Dawgs would score, we’d immediately turn around to watch for cups raining down from the upper deck. Fortunately, (1) they usually had the courtesy to empty said cups before throwing, and (2) it was the Goff era, so scoring wasn’t really common occurrence.

      • My Gator brother got a big wad of gum thrown in his hair when they came to Sanford

      • He definitely deserved it and I think his buddies were just glad he didn’t get thrown off the upper deck.

    • We threw the wax cups in the early 90’s. Took a miracle to get them out of the upper deck…had to be a very tight spiral.

    • Well that led to the infamous bourbon bottle throw that severely injured someone and thus began the tight security and end of the cup tossing era.

What really sucks about the Ut incident is the refs not calling a delay of game penalty. The problem, I suppose, is how do you enforce it if it’s the visiting team’s fans? What if fans do it just to create the penalty for the other team? A lack of clear and decisive action going back to Kiffin in Knoxville and now Texas has created a mess that is going to take a while to settle down. Beefed up stadium security and immediate ejection of fans will have to happen.

    • After each wave, the P.A. would ask the fans not to throw things from the upper deck…which always led to a second wave. About half the kids would save their cup for the second wave. I

  3. Still baffles me how Texas wasn’t penalized in the game for delay or unsportsmanlike conduct or something regardless of the penalty/no penalty call. The bitch-ass SEC refs set a precedent that will be repeated until actual consequences happen.

    • I thought they should have at least charged UT a timeout. They basically got a free 9-minute timeout and challenge of a non-reviewable call.

    • I believe they flagged him for taunting. Why that triggered the Colorado fan base that much is beyond me. Must be the altitude…Rocky Mountain Hiiiigh

  4. I was listening to the Ohio State game (local announcers) and they directly called out the Texas situation for what was happening at their game.

SEC completely mishandled the situation, and students saw that throwing stuff on the field got the call overturned at Texas with zero negative effects. The students couldn’t care less about a $250k fine.

    • I was watching the national OSU broadcast and they also mentioned the Texas situation when it happened in Columbus.

And yes, the SEC botched this whole thing. Fine them $2 or 3MM post game and in game take away a timeout from the team and tack on an unsportsmanlike penalty and 15 yards to either the head coach or the starting QB so that if there is a second incident, either by the coach or player, it results in the coach or the player getting ejected.
