Kirby Smart, Timing is Everything: Georgia Lands #2 LB for 2027

Impeccable timing, Kirby. I never knew he was a reader of the blog. No sooner had I posted something yesterday about a lackluster recruiting class, then Kirby has a banner day:

Kirby brought in four recruits in two days, and word is, that train isn’t slowing down, either.

Kirby also added Lovejoy EDGE Olayiwola Taiwo, another three-star, but Georgia suddenly jumped up from 22nd to 11th in the On3/Rivals team rankings for 2027, and now has an over 90 point average for the quality of the class.

Not a bad day at the office for Kirbs.

Go Dawgs!

  1. “What’s wrong with Georgia recruiting?”

It’s always the question raised in May before official visits start.

I still don’t believe anything is real until ink is on paper, but if the Dawgs aren’t in the top 10 (or 5) by month’s end, then it’s time to ask the question.

  2. I was going to post on the other thread a few days but held off. Count me as one who has been slightly worried about CKS and staff adapting to the NIL landscape. It is exciting to see us get some commitments especially in light of missing out on some folks and have some decommits recently.

I don’t subscribe to the give me 2 & 3 stars who want to be there and we will go beat everyone because they care theory. Saban’s philosophy of grabbing as many 4 & 5 stars on the roster and let’s bludgeon everyone without our talent worked pretty well.

That being said, I think a “Moneyball” philosophy of putting together a roster without just overpaying is prudent. However, once everyone in baseball saw what the A’s were doing, the well-funded clubs started using the same analytics and data AND had increased purse strings. Teams in the big markets (e.g. LA Dodgers) started following the model and the A’s were up and down before moving to Vegas.

We have seen our AD comment that the department needs to find additional revenue streams to keep up. We also have seen the school President talk about defecting from the larger competitive landscape (I am wondering if this is for all sports or just football) while intimating it is also about money. Even CKS has made comments about the direction of football and college athletics.

I am curious to know if part of it is due to CKS and staff missing out on recruits because they either are being handcuffed by an “internal” salary cap (remember we are school that took pride in our department profitability and reserve fund) or other schools are simply outbidding us time and time again.

CKS has talked about how retaining the majority of the roster was important for 2026. I am wondering if this recruiting class will be a reset of CKS’s recruiting philosophy after seeing OSU and Indiana win the last two NC trophies. Does CKS and staff start taking players out of high school who are rock-solid program fits but not necessarily five stars at each position and then each year the look for even more transfers who are proven football production recruits (better if they have more than 1 or 2 years of eligibility) who spend more $$ on and sell them on getting them to the league?

  3. 247 has him ranked as the 23rd LB in the 2027 class. Every single one of the commitments from the past week were nationally unranked 3 stars. I won’t worry about recruiting in Athens unless this becomes a trend, but Ladd McConkey references aside I’m not sure if any of these commitments move the needle much.
