  1. NIL is not the problem with college football. Market forces will find a way to settle the NIL question. The unrestricted transfer portal absolutely is. Whatever gets done to reform college sports needs to have the portal at the top of the list.

    • As long as coaches can do whatever whenever at the same time.

      I think that the analysis is entirely backwards. Without $ being a factor, kids would not be entering the portal at nearly the same rates.

      My model: every scholarship athlete, regardless of sport, gets the same stipend, derived from revenue sharing or whatever, would be a far better one.

      The problem isn’t money per se. The problem is the market itself.

      Adding some sort of “reserve clause” so that its like baseball before 1970, is not allowing a market forces to rule. It’s restricting the market because the actors in it are perceived to suck. Well, so what? That’s part of the market.

      I question whether or not children should be bought on a market in the first instance.

      Paid/reimbursed etc… is fine. Just give $ to the qb at the same rate as the girl’s soccer goalie.

      And punish any black market attempts to circumvent that very harshly.

  3. And the dirty little secret coaches won’t say out loud – the portal and NIL allow for coaches to get rid of players they don’t want. The timeline needs to be changed, portal is may 1-15, no spring practice instead have mini camp in June.

    • Saban was doing it before the portal. Its called “processing.” Not that anyone gives a shit.

      In the opinion of most fans, the schools and coaches are allowed to whatever in the name of winning. Its the kids doing what’s best for themselves that causes all the problems.

  5. Scholarships in the past were a one year deal. If the coach didn’t want to renew you were released. That was mostly kept quiet. As much as I dislike the portal it’s easy to understand how it got here.

    It’s stupid that the portal opens while teams are still playing. We are never going back to the game we knew. It’s always follow the money to see what’s coming in CFB.

  6. The university presidents have dug a hole so deep they can’t find their way out and will A) let the courts dictate chaos or B) get Congress to protect their ATM. The NCAA is toothless on SA issues due to court losses past, present and future combined with the fact that non -P4 member institutions outvote any reform that excludes them and their share of the money. The P4 conference commissioners (plus ND) openly despise one another and will not cooperate on anything. The NFL is one league with one vote per team and a single commissioner to adjudicate their rules. College sports have no pathway to that solution in the current environment. They fucked it up, they know it, but they can’t fix it.

  7. I saw a interesting listing today of Indiana’s starting roster. All but a few are 4 or 5 year guys. So basically they are a semi-pro team of 21-23 year olds as compared to our roster of mostly 18-20 (not NFL eligible) year old players. As you may know, all else being equal, there is a BIG difference in strength between a 19 and a 23 year old man. Huge actually. Kirby may have to rethink his roster strategy because our 5-stars are playing as freshman and leaving after three years. These guys at Indy have been playing college football at some level and conditioning themselves for 4-5 years. I have not looked but I am betting Ole Miss had a much older roster as well. If we could retain guys like CJ Allen to play an extra year or two then no big deal, but that isn’t happening currently. We also are losing our young reserve talent to the portal. Just curious what everyone thinks about these opposing strategies in roster management. The SEC standard of recruiting top talent and developing them may lose out to hiring experienced pro-eligible players from all of CFB.

    • I was thinking about this after the game. All 4 teams left were built in the portal, not recruiting and all have portal transfer QB’s. Like it or not it’s a common theme. I appreciate with what Kirby does in recruiting but it seems like it may not be the way to a CFP tournament chanpionship.

      I’m happy with the SEC Championship and prefer it to the tournament actually. I said this prior to the SEC Championship game. The tournament is nice for some extra football at the end of the year.

    • It comes back to whether or not you believe winning the CFP makes a successful season. I understand those who do, but I have a different perspective.

      Win the SEC.
      Beat our rivals.
      Let the chips fall where they may after the first weekend in December.

      To do the first 2, I don’t care how Kirby does it. On the 3rd, don’t blow a 9-point halftime lead by going into a shell on offense and playing like the Keystone Kops on defense.

    • History tells us in all sorts of businesses that evolution is necessary to continue to succeed. Some of the best end up failing when old ways no longer work as new competition disrupts the status quo. We’ll see firsthand how Kirby deals with this. Even “know nothing” fans can point to the inevitable.
