Head Over, Heels

I was at Stegeman in 1997 when this last happened, and I have to say, I’ll be buying a ticket.

We lost, 82-80, in case you can’t even watch the replay from 30 something years ago. Ron Jirsa, we hardly knew thee.

Good on G.G. Smith, hanging around after Tubby left. You just don’t see that anymore.

  1. Who remembers Vern Fleming and Co. taking down Michael Jordan in the regional final in 1983?

      • And when they stepped off the plane, “Chicken Hawk’s” toupee almost flew off his head! Dominique “Magnifique” lived above me on the back hall of The Mack!

  2. The ’97 game was scheduled because Dean Smith had a policy to play at least one game at the closest university from a player’s hometown, The player he did that for that year was Michael Brooker from Sandersville. I can remember playing against him on the playground when he’d show up with his older brother, John. Kid was maybe 13, playing against dudes that were in their early 20s, & he was schooling everybody. Came 10 short of setting the national record for consecutive free throws made.
