Here’s a great question for today:
To me, it was the 2017 season, aka, the Revenge Season. But more importantly, it was when this happened:
Whatever Kirby said there must’ve been on par with Don Corleone, an offer that none of us could refuse. Chubb could’ve had an extra season in the league. Ditto most of those guys, but they stayed,
What’s your magical Kirby Moment?
When the FU half time speech was released. I’d always liked Kirby but that audio is double platinum.
Winning a night game in South Bend with a qb who had just left high school.
I knew after the Miss St game in 2017. 2016 was mixed results. I was agnostic. Hopeful, but not convinced. ND was a a great win, it showed me he could handle adversity. But the next week? That showed me he could handle prosperity. That wasn’t always the case pre-Kirby, where good wins sometimes preceded embarrassing losses. Kirby has earned our trust and our confidence. He’s human, so there will be bad weeks or even bad seasons at some point. But I’m confident it won’t be from a lack of preparation or focus by the head coach, ever.
The Mississippi State game is what came immediately to my mind, too. Big buildup, “trap game” for the Dawgs, all the stars aligning for a letdown and Kirby unleashed hell on the bizzaro dogs and Mullen/Grantham.
The first quarter of the Florida game in 2017.
Derek’s point is a good one but the ND game didn’t display how physically tougher we were. When I was sitting in the stadium in Jacksonville watching I thought, “Damn, we look like Alabama did at our place in 2015.”
When this happened … I knew it was different.

I forgot what a friggin stable of backs we had that year. Geezz we had some DAWGS!!
4 current and future 1000 yard backs on 1 team … throw in the fact they had a line in front of them that just mauled people. I miss Sam Pittman.
I need a cigarette after watch that! Should come with a NSFW warning. 🙂
I love when they bring those fake juice alternate unis and the Dawgs just pound their sorry asses.
Kicking the shit out of Auburn (revenge) in the SEC championship! Loudmouth barner sitting behind me left MB @ Q3 — he knew it was OVER!!!
We kicked the Bird crap out them, didn’t we.
When he stayed as Bama’s DC despite being hunted for nearly every open HC job in the country. I think he was holding out to come home, but wasn’t going to push anything out of respect for CMR. USCjr. pushing the issue to try and hire him is what ultimately set the wheels in motion at Butts-Mehre, but I’m not really sure if would have taken any job except UGA, or maybe to replace Saban.
The rumor was Saban told him in 2010 not to take the DC job because he would be first in line for the HC job if he stayed at Bama and grew in his experience when CMR left one way or another.
Nick knew the job Kirby (and Mary Beth) wanted was the head coach position at Georgia.
I agree with you about Kirby getting those guys to return for 2017 when there wasn’t NIL*.
*Yeah, I’m sure they still got something for their troubles, but not sure it replaced an NFL contract.
This was it for me as well. With all the turmoil those guys had been through, them to returning told me there was something great brewing. Then, 2017 was such a magical season that even with the heartbreaking ending, you just knew we were on the cusp.
And the NCAA couldn’t have a bunch of barking Dawgs as the gold standard of the sport, so they decided to completely revamp the way college football was run. 😉
Meh…2 natties in 9 years. Show me something.
Seriously it was late 2016 and the changes, money and commitments from those in charge he was getting. Confirmed he was “the guy” and not just a popular hire.
We all knew Kirby in college and when he was hired a friend of mine said “Kirby is just like us.” I took that to mean from Georgia, went to UGA, loves the Dawgs, believes in defense and the running game.
I know some here hate Bobo, but I do think there’s something about having Kirby, Bobo, and Boom all together back at their alma mater, doing what they love. I wish we could get Boom back on the sidelines as I think his passion was missing from the defense.
I’m still not convinced.
Joking…
28-7 Dawgs over Auburn in 2017 SEC Championship.
For me it wasn’t a game. It was when Kirby told BM if you want to win this is what it’s going to take, and they delivered. There are too many good games as to when we turned the ship.
Just adding a little to what you already said I can truthfully say I wanted him before the Big Dogs did, and for those who thought that the administration should have paid for a search I ask why waste the money on that? We all had front row seats watching his development at Bama. Was there a better recruiter available some where else? Or a better position coach? Or a better Defensive Coordinator? Or any other possible get that had all that combined into one coach and did it consistently over multiple years? I had high expectations from the beginning and he has exceeded them.
I get that, but I saw the on field product in 2016. At that point, I wondered if he was going to get the table set for the next guy. When we went into Kneeland and smoked the smoke-clad, I felt we were on the precipice of something special.
It takes a while to get a battleship turned around. A year seemed about right to me.
When he unleashed this … https://youtu.be/IexXBVhv9WY?si=oSlxn2rIEtUGHsJd
I guess it took me longer than most of y’all.
The “we’re not going anywhere” speech after the 2017 Alabama game. That was the moment I knew he cared as much as we do.
