Flashback Friday – University Transportation

Boy this brought back memories.

Especially since I’m 99% sure that the kid in the middle with the shaved head is me. It was a thing, for a time, so don’t judge. And those things could get more crowded than a Japanese underground train, too.

Did you take the bus when you were on campus (if you attended) or ride them on game days? Did it ever hit you in a weird way when you went to Disney World and realized they used the same buses for Mickey?

  1. I took the Russell and East-West during my freshman year while I lived in Russell and my classes were primarily on North Campus.

I took the Milledge bus a couple of times a day for 3 years after that. Once again, no way was I going to walk from North Campus up Baxter to Milledge.

I’m just glad I never got on the Orbit bus going the wrong way.

  2. Still remember pulling up to the Library stop when the tower started to come down over the radio; bus driver just paused for 2 or 3 minutes and no one moved as we listened, stunned. Then we all kind of shuffled off in silence and found out they cancelled classes a few minutes later….

  3. The majority of my classes were at Driftmier at the south end of campus, so didn’t need the bus that much. I did appreciate the free transportation.

My funny bus story involves a rainy day. I was walking down Ag Hill south towards Driftmier. The walk near the bottom of the hill was along a head high stone wall. Since it was raining, there was a large puddle at the bottom of the hill beside the sidewalk. As I trundled along heading alongside the puddle, I noticed a packed bus coming down the hill. I looked for possible escapes, but I was stuck between a large rock wall and a deep puddle. So I just stood there and took the bath. Luckily I was wearing a poncho, but I was soaked from the ass down.

The karma aspect applied because as a smart-ass kid in high school, I would intentionally drive through puddles and splash pedestrians, so I absolutely deserved my bath. I no longer do that, by the way.

  4. I remember being so lazy (or probably hungover) that we’d take the North/South(?) bus from the Tate Center to the Arch, then walk back down the hill to our class at Park Hall just to avoid climbing the steps. Although I would also contend that the hill climbs up from Tate to North or South campus was why UGA girls had the nicest legs…

  5. Rode the bus until I figured out I could throw my bike in the back of the truck, park at the old Stegman Lot, work or study until the gates rose (don’t be lewd) I think around 6 and celebrate getting over for free parking. Circa Early 90’s.

  6. Took bus later years a parking became expensive. Parked at a a friends place behind zeta house on Milledge and took that bus. Met my friends hot neighbor and we have been married for almost 20 years. Taking the bus for the win!!!

  7. Most of my classes were on North Campus so I did a lot of walking on the most scenic side of the campus. But the bus system was great when I was there. I took it often, usually from the center of campus to Downtown. I had few classes on the south side of campus so I rarely used it go venture to that side of campus unless I wanted to visit Snelling.

Having visited what seemed like every frickin college on the East coast (there were a couple West of the MS river thrown in) when my three kids were making college choices, I would try to relate the size of the campus to UGA, judge how easy it would be to get around and, also, if the campus had a bus system. Between all three I know we visited 50+ schools and I think just a few had a decent bus system.

I distinctly remember hearing that UGA’s bus system was the largest campus bus system in the country when I was in school.

My youngest is going into their sophmore year in Athens and they take the bus on a occasion. According to my kid, it is easier to walk because the bus gets super crowded.

  8. I never took the Night Bus, but in the 80s I heard tallest of drunken shenanigans.

The North-South and Milledge were my main transportation for a couple of years. I tried for a while to park in the Commuter lot and use the Orbit line, but that was guaranteed to make you late. Once I discovered you could park in the lower Tate Center lot and wait for the cashier to close at 6 or 7, that was my routine.
