The Oklahoma offense this year looks like this as the offense has scored an average of 12 points a game in their last 2 outings. The Georgia offense will clearly face its toughest challenge of the season so far against an OU defense that looks nothing like the OU defense the last time we saw them. If the Dawgs can get into the high 20s, I don’t see a path to victory for the Sooners. Let’s get to the first look.
Series record / last meeting
Georgia leads the series 1-0. In what some believe is one of the top 3 CFP games of all time, these 2 play an instant classic in the Rose Bowl as the Dawgs come from double digits down to win in double overtime. The Georgia offense runs over the Oklahoma defense as Nick Chubb and Sony Michel both have enormous games. The Georgia defense comes out and humbles Baker Mayfield in the 2nd half led by Roquan Smith, Davin Bellamy, and Lorenzo Carter. The one thing that many forget is the block Jake Fromm makes on the cornerback to spring Michel on his wildcat touchdown to win the game.
Gambling degenerate facts
According to DraftKings, Georgia is -13.5 point favorite with a point total of 43.5 and are a -575 money line favorite.
Interesting statistic: 22.5% (3rd down conversion defense rate)
Through 3 games against not so great offenses, the Oklahoma defense has been stingy on 3rd down. They have 12 sacks and have been good against both run and pass. It is going to be important for the Dawgs to win on 1st and 2nd downs and stay out of 3rd and medium to long. This game will be one where every drive needs to end in a kick of some kind to make it as difficult as possible for the Oklahoma offense to sustain drives against the Georgia defense.
Early outlook
2 touchdowns seems like a lot to me. Maybe that’s the logo on the helmet talking more than the actual teams in the flesh. If the Georgia defense plays to expectations, it’s going to be really difficult for the Sooners to score enough to win. I do think the point total is going to be low.
Dawgs win but probably don’t cover the spread. We’re going to know a lot about our offense by about 7:00 on Saturday night.

Mayfield has humbled himself a little and some of his commercials are nicely self mocking.
If I were an NFL exec and had my choice, I’d take Mayfield over Burrow in a heartbeat. Joe seems like his head isn’t screwed on straight half the time and like he couldn’t care less about playing football anymore. Mayfield still has that hunt in him.
Important to note that Burrow has a ring (from college) and is lauded as one of the GOATs of college football, while Mayfield is not. I’d imagine that’s got to be inspiring, on some level.
I always kinda liked Mayfield. I knew about his story coming up prior to winning the Heisman. He took the dirt road to success so I respect him for it.

Sometimes I think scores are misleading. As with the New Mexico score vs. Oklahoma. I’m sure that Okie spent very little time on planning for New Mexico and were planning for the Dawgs for two weeks. Which almost bit them in the arse. Venables knows this could be his signature game in which will cement him in being able to win BIG games. The Dawgs better be ready!

Lobos are salty. Sooners held to 61 yds rushing. Mateer picked 2x. I wouldn’t put a lot of stock into the 14-6 score (or lack thereof) other than it was a tough opponent. You are correct, DAWGS had better be ready!!
They said during the broadcast rewatch on Sunday that the Lobos brought back their entire defense and it sounded like they were Indiana-age eligible. New Mexico had some dudes. I think we do, too, but they were better than advertised and lots of lead up to the game had folks picking a New Mexico upset.

OU still has a lot of good players. Their QB play has made the team look much less capable than they are. I don’t like playing teams with running QB’s especially those with their season already on the line. A few lucky throws early and this could be the first stress test of the year.

I am not sure that we know who or what this squad is after 2 1/2 cupcakes. We have seen an awful lot of good to very good from this group so far, with only a couple of question marks. Do we have issues on the O-line, specifically RT and LG? From my uneducated eye Gaston did not have his best day in Fayetteville. Can our front 4 consistently put pressure on the QB? I have yet to see it, so my assumption is no. This may prove to be problematic. If I am right on both areas, Saturday could an an awfully long and sad day for the Dawgs. If I am wrong (highly likely), the Saturday should be a great day.

OK hasn’t played well this year..but they’ll be ready to play the Dawgs. But I think Bobo’s offense has too many looks and weapons (some of which we probably haven’t even seen yet) for their defense to hold up for four quarters. I think Georgia covers the point spread comfortably.
I’ll stick mostly to my prior prediction with Frazier and Canion dinged up. I believe the defense can handle most of what OU is seemingly trying to do on offense. I do think OU having to account for the TEs will slow down that pass rush at times, and that Gunner’s choices to throw it away or scamper for positive yardage can be trusted. So I’m going to give the Dawgs an extra FG and go with a 20-9 final score. (Which means it will be 31-17.)

We’ll score a couple of TDs in the first half, Gunner will throw his first pick of the season, and Oklahoma will have to settle for a couple of field goals as we take a 14-6 lead into halftime. The Sooners will score a TD late into the 3rd quarter, with a failed 2-point conversion, while the Dawgs tack on another TD and 2 field goals.

Home field will be significant for Dawgs. I think TE will have big impact. Okie’s DB’s appear solid, so downfield may get taken away. Hope Gunner trusts TE’s over the middle against LB coverage. Special teams/punt coverage will need to be on point, their returner is special.

This isn’t going to be a game for dropping back and waiting in the pocket and it’s clear Gunner can and will use his legs. I would plan on that being a heavy dose of reality and they need to continue to threaten to stretch the field and get the TEs involved in the short passing game. Gunner isn’t going to have time for finesse and I hope that Bobo realizes that. I’d even be cautious about the screen game as OU has the talent to jump those and turn them into INTs or losses, but I’m sure there will be plenty of these quick hitters attempted if, for nothing else, to try to stretch the field and loosen the defense. Aggressive defenses need quick hits, three tight end sets, and RPO, and we’ve got the horses to execute. Will we? Remains to be seen.
I’d say lay Mateer out, but, frankly, I’d rather him be in to make some of those poor passing decisions we’re used to and just ensure we stuff him at the LOS. They have a pretty good TE room that we need to attend to but we’ve got fast linebackers to matchup well in that regard.
Like EE, I expect a low scoring affair. But, hey, I didn’t expect us to beat the spread three times this year and here we are.

There aren’t a lot of quarterbacks out there I particularly like, but I have a shorter list of guys I’d want on my team under center – Matt Stafford and Josh Allen. One because he’s a Dawg and the other because he seems like an all-around good dude and a hell of a ball player.
