Countdown to Georgia Bulldogs Football, 57 Days

Good morning!

Happy Independence Day! Now, kids, be careful with fireworks, you should probably leave those to the adults who have been drinking all day. Stay safe!

Our countdown arrives at 57 days to go and card #157 from the set:

I was 15 years old. Watching on the old Curtis Mathes console TV. When Buck scrambled around and hit Lindsay and Lindsay started running, I was jumping up and down screaming my head off. I wasn’t smart enough to listen to Munson back then so, I never heard his call until later. What a game, what a finish! And when Mike Fisher made the INT to end the FU threat, it was glorious. I’ll say it again, what a game!

Go Dawgs!

      • It’s got a flavor to it, a taste that never leaves mine Red and Black soul wanting more from Munson….knowing he told it like he felt it, in his heart, in that moment allowed me to follow Lawrence Harry Munson wherever he wanted to take us….GO DAWGS!!

    • Current situation… I’m sitting on my dock at Lake Blackshear where I have 55″, 43″ & 58″ TVs mounted in the rafters. Got the 1980 Sugar Bowl, 2021 CFP Championship and the 2022 CFP Championship going… all on a loop. C’mon over Whit and enjoy with me, I have you a front row seat for the fireworks tonight! Go Dawgs!

  1. Curtis Mathes Console! That takes me back. “The most expensive television in America and darn well worth it!” It was a status symbol back in the day.
That game is one of my all time best UGA memories. I had a live in girlfriend who was a Florida alumni and I took her to Jacksonville to the game. She was chirping nonstop after the tall, skinny Gator wide receiver caught that pass and ran it in for a long TD to give them juice. She was fucking insufferable when they went ahead. She didn’t say a damn word after Lindsay scored for the rest of the weekend!
We were on about the 5th row about the 10 yard line. The play unfolded directly in front of us and Lindsay ran away from us.
There were two young guys, vocal and enthusiastic Dawgs, directly behind us. We were all drinking brown liquor, of course, in the warm sun. Every time something exciting on the field happened I would turn around and high five. When Lindsay scored I turned around and both were slumped on the bleacher seats passed out!
I will bet anyone that even though they slept through the greatest play in UGA history they will go to their graves bragging, “I was there! I remember it vividly!:

    • I was there too, with a good friend of mine. We ran out of “brown liquor” about half time so I was mostly alert when Lindsay ran it in. I was thinking shortly before that play that we better not mess around; time was running out (I think there was only about 2 minutes left when we got the ball back). The way the stadium was shaking I literally thought the whole thing would crash in on us at any moment.

      • Millennial Dawgs would be shocked at the volume of alcohol openly consumed in the Gator Bowl prior to the 1986 game (Crack down as a result of the on field post game fights caused but heartbroken Gators.) The joke was that you got checked at the gate for alcohol and if you didn’t have any they gave you a bottle.

  2. Kind of like the Bennett to Mitchell and Young to Ringo combo. It was the first game I’d watched separately from my wife since the Georgia-Notre Dame tilt in Athens. I was at a conference in Oklahoma City and face timing her the entire game and she had already started giving up. When he hit Mitchell I lost it and the Ringo pick six was the moment it finally hit. I didn’t really have an expectation of what it would feel like but it was otherworldly. Went down to the hotel bar and there were about a half dozen of us fellow Dawgs down there and we kept running up a tab well into the early morning. Good times.
