Countdown to Georgia Bulldogs Football, 49 Days
As my Granddaddy said, he’s to be pitied, noy to be made fun of.
The Herschel years were heady times for this UGA fan. Back in the 70’s when I grew up, CFB was totally dominated by “that old gang of nine”–Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio St. Penn St. Bama, Texas, USC, Oklahoma and Nebraska. It was the first time in my experience Dawgs were regularly mentioned in the same breath as the programs above. It was fun while it lasted!
Early in the Dooley years we were considered a power. The 1965 victory over defending MNC Alabama followed a couple of weeks later with a win in Ann Arbor against Michigan turned a lot of college football writers’ heads. Sports Illustrated’s top college football writer. John Underwood, was in Ann Arbor covering tjat game and he was very complementary in that article. Then in 1966 we won the SEC and the Cotton Bowl. A national sports writer (I do not recall who) wrote that Georgia was the best program because it had the best coaching staff in the country and great players.
Everyone knew 1967 was a rebuilding year then we won the SEC with an undefeated record in 1968. Every one has heard or read about why Arkansas kicked our asses in the Sugar Bowl but that loss took some of the luster off our program going into 1969 and the decade of the 1970s.
I’m aware of that period of Dawg history, but it was unfortunately before my time. I became a big UGA fan during my HS years in mid-late 70’s and was of course in 7th heaven during 1980-83 period. I absolutely love where Dawgs have resided since 2017, but I look back on that other brief era of excellence very fondly.
I think that kid from Johnson County may turn out to be a good contributor.
