I know I saw this in real time, but didn’t realize what was happening.

Taking notes here…I wonder how many times we can insert a 12th man on the field Saturday in Austin? We might just need it.

  1. Don’t forgot you also make them burn their best play as well. I saw that in real time too and thought it was brilliant.

  2. Isn’t it a really a “free-play” similar to a defensive off-sides? So if there’s an interception or fumble recovery it wouldn’t count?

    • It’s not a dead ball foul on the defense (I believe there’s only one dead ball, pre-snap penalty on the defense – making contact when offsides or forcing the offensive lineman to jump). If the offense breaks the huddle with 12, it’s a dead ball foul.

It used to be that if you had 12 men participate in the play, it was a 15 yard penalty. I didn’t realize that had changed.

      • Is/was the objective to burn a few seconds? Make sure the next play is the last one?

        • Yes if it was intentional because it’s a live ball foul. I tend to believe Occam’s razor on this one. I think the Oregon sideline got away with one screw-up. If the penalty were 10 or 15 yards instead because the 12th guy wasn’t trying to leave the field at the snap and Ohio State makes a long field goal, CDL is on the Message Board Geniuses post instead of Just for Men’s spokesman.

          • I’m with you ee. I think it was a screwup that just worked out well. The play would have burned those seconds regardless. The more puzzling thing is the QB slide on the next play. That was Reggie Ball-esque.

    • I’ve searched, but don’t think Lanning would cop to it given the public buzz about faking injuries and abusing the rulebook. If it was truly intentional, and it could be a 50/50 speculation at this point, talk about a new level of situational defense that would be rehearsed in practice. Ole Miss is consulting with FIFA to determine how best to feign injuries, Dan Lanning is coordinating with the MI6 to do James Bond level shit. Lanning. Dan Lanning. If true, I bet that social media video of the Duck travelling the Big Ten during pre-season was really Dan in a mascot suit scouting practices.

  3. It’s extremely unlikely that was intentional. Everything has to be a conspiracy on social media these days. The extra man is also a deep guy who could hold, commit PI, target, etc. No guarantee tOSU fails to make a play there. If Howard recognized it he should have thrown a jump ball deep for a 50/50 or the PI. He missed it and didn’t see to do the same thing on the last play. Bad QB play and terrible coaching by Day to not remind Howard what to do. Good for Lanning to just keep smiling when asked…great PR.
