Center of Attention

I’ll leave this right here:

I’ll say it again…injuries, and what could’ve been.

  1. As time goes by, last year’s record seems like an overreach. Everyone was hurt, our receivers couldn’t catch, our defense could not keep contain, our run game was awful per our standards and our QB was an interception machine for a stretch. I am going to assume that the injuries are a good part of the reason our O line coach is not on a red-hot seat, not that I would know if he actually is.

    • I’ll die on the hill that 2024 was Kirby’s best coaching job to date. I’d say his second best was however he negotiated getting the core of talent back for 2017 that lead to the run that really put him on the map as a great coach.

  2. I don’t remember if Dylan Fairchild missed significant playing time, but the offensive line injuries were across the board. It’s hard to have that cohesion up front if, from game to game, you don’t know who’s available.

The other problem with last year’s offensive line is that our 2 best guys were in the interior as opposed to tackle. The IOL spots are devalued in today’s game given that Wilson and Ratledge are both day 2 selections.

  3. The further we get from last season with post season analysis the more I’m impressed with the results. So many injuries, WR group leading the nation in drops, and a brutal road schedule. Resulting in another SEC championship.

  4. DAMMIT BOBO…WHY DIDN’T YOU PUT HIM IN AT RUNNING BACK?

  5. Not saying this isn’t a good thing for Wilson, but how important is the 40 yard dash time for an IOL? I wouldn’t think straight line speed would be in the top three traits making an effective interior lineman in the NFL. It doesn’t hurt, but I’m guessing the GM’s and scouts are looking for other things first.

    • A lot of the IOLs at the combine are guards that a pro team would be hoping to convert to center. Wilson was one of the few, if not only, guys repping as a pure center. Since he likely won’t be converted to a guard or anything else, any analytics he can get that points to great athleticism is a bonus. I hear he’s likely a late second rounder because he had good metrics.

  6. I believe a lot of our problems last year was drops by the erst.
It totally hurt if running game & kept us behind the 8 ball. Made our offensive line look worse than it was.

  7. I would associate part of the anomoly of these two guys’ combine performance versus the season results on the O-Line as 1. Ratledge went down and missed several games then had a few more before (if he ever) got back healthy and 2. This was Wilson’s first year at center making the blocking calls. I think he struggled in that area.

That doesn’t speak highly of Searles for not coachingWilson up and not having more depth game ready. But this year are his guys so he can’t blame Luke’s recruiting.
