A Debate as Old as Time

It feels like it’s been a good while since we’ve had a healthy QBR debate in the spring. To be honest, I welcome that a lot more than any NIL drama or offseason arrest fodder that, lately, had become the norm for this time of year.

  1. Why you young whippersnappers have it easy. When I started whining about the quarterback, it was whether we should play Fred or Barney!

  2. I like Brooks, but this is engagement farming. I don’t remember anyone saying JT over Stet in 2022. That’s after Stet already won a natty. They did say that in 2021… because JT
was the starter to begin the season. And Beck was the heir apparent in 2023. Nobody was calling for BVG. (I never thought BVG was the guy because of his mechanics, personally). People got frustrated with Beck in 2024 because he became a turnover machine in the middle of the season, so I’m sure there were calls to replace him. If anyone is calling for Puglisi, it’s because people like Brooks have talked him up so much.

The backup QB is always the most liked player on the team by fans. For every team.

    • Yeah I thought the timing was off. JT wasn’t even around in 2022 as he was off to West Virginia. I found it more interesting about Marshall’s response, especially considering who else was in the QB room in 2012.

  3. The one I will support is Eric Zeier over Greg Talley. Eventually, even Ray Goff got it in 1991.

Gunner isn’t the reason we lost in New Orleans. 2 terrible turnovers … both caused by missed blocks and 1 of those by a really dumb coaching decision made by Kirby … and a special teams disaster were the 17 points that changed the entire game.

  4. Brooks is great and we wouldn’t have as many people confidently saying stupid things about Georgia football if more of our fans watched him. But he’s somewhat remembering this wrong. The majority of the JT over Stetson was in ‘21. But not all of it. People have conveniently forgotten this but there was a vocal crowd of fans that were mad when Stetson decided to come back and wanted him to take his championship and ride off into the sunset. So Brooks is a little off but not much. And the rest is spot on.

    • The only time I really heard people say JT over SBIV in 2021 was after the stinker Stetson threw up in the SEC championship game. While the team was making the run, it was apparent Bennett had won over the locker room, and JT appeared content to support Bennett through the remainder of the season and happy for him at season’s end.

Bennett was the unquestioned face of the program in 2022 and played like it from beginning to end.

      • I was saying it before the seccg because I anticipated he would struggle vs bama. And for 110 minutes vs bama, he did.

  5. When it was announced Stetson was starting against Arkansas there were people grumbling. People rewrite history. Stetson got treated pretty bad by the Georgia fan base and he heard it. Look at all the complaints about him and the championship parade in Athens after the ‘22 championship. Georgia fans treat our quarterbacks bad. You’re great until you become the starter. This is true across eras. The way Stetson got crapped on has been whitewashed in people’s minds since but that’s all it is; revisionism.

    • Early in ‘21, I’ll give it to you. People were thinking after JT got hurt the 2nd time, “We have all the ingredients to win a title. How do we win a national championship with a former walk-on at QB? That’s so Georgia.” I admit I wondered if JT deserved another look in 2021 going into the CFP, but I trusted Kirby to make the right decision for the team (something a loud portion of our fan base still needs to learn). SBIV rose to the occasion in a way I don’t think JT would have.

In 2022, he was fully embraced by all but the most recruitnik fans. By season’s end, he became a Georgia legend getting a curtain call in a national championship game. Still, he could have been (and probably should have been) more gracious after the ‘22 game.

        • Jamie Newman left us in a terrible place in 2020, and Monken did what he thought was best. I remember Pollack telling everyone Mathis was going to tear it up.

Bauta was desperation … nothing more, nothing less.

  6. Stetson has always been the Oceania fan’s choice to start against Eastasia State.

  7. Gunnar was unquestionably what we needed last year until New Orleans. Now we gotta have Puglisi.

  8. We agree on all of that except for one thing; no he wasn’t fully embraced by all. He just wasn’t. The team? Absolutely. A lot of the fans? Sure. But not all. That’s exactly what Brooks’ point is. He won a title and there were still people carping who wanted him to go away. I accept that you didn’t know this or whatever but to say that it just didn’t happen is not true. Go back through the comments on GTP around that time if you think I’m just making it up.

  9. The best part is that when they listen to that fan bs and it all goes wrong it was the coach’s fault.

Remember Bauta? Oh, that was gonna be a glorious day in Jax and then…. welp, it was Bobo!!

  10. where does Joe Cox fit into this debate as well as our full ride, fair catch safe punt return specialist QB?
