Changing of the (radio) guard

I’m not sure what I think about this:

I know many of you didn’t like Scott Howard’s style, but he lasted for a long time in the long shadow of the GOAT, Larry Munson. Ray Goff famously said while head coach that it was difficult to follow a legend, but he wouldn’t want to be the man to follow Larry Munson.

Howard is still going to be involved with Georgia radio.

He’ll always be remembered for this:

Jeff Dantzler is going to replace Howard this fall. I admit I’m not sure I like it. To me, he tries too hard to be the keeper of all things Georgia history, and some of his comments in 2016 still stick with me. It did with the Senator as well:

On the positive side, I love the selection of Jon Stinchcomb for color. He’s been good on Dawgnation every Monday morning every week but especially after a game, and he loves Georgia. He has been a color guy on the Saints’ preseason games. Of course, he knows a ton about good line play on both sides.

eeditor’s note: This wasn’t mutual. Scott has always been a DGD.

Refugees, what do you think? Discuss.

About eethomaswfnc

I've been a Dawg my entire life. UGA was always my dream school where I received 2 Terry College degrees and met my DGD wife. I've been a season ticket holder for over 30 years and love the in-stadium experience over anything from Section HD. My first game in Sanford Stadium was the 1981 Auburn game where we clinched the SEC championship. The best game I've attended in person was the Midnight Miss against Ohio State (nite, nite!). The best home games I've attended were the 1984 Clemson game (the Butler did it) and the 2013 LSU game (that 4th down is still the loudest single moment I've experienced between the hedges). The game I love to win is against the Handbags (FTMF), and the game I hate to lose is the NATS (Tuck Fech).

  1. Dantzler needs to stay ONLY in the baseball and women’s basketball room. His candy coating and ass kissing concern me for higher intensity football. Will he ever challenge the powers that be? Very unlikely. My opinion only.

  2. I was not a fan of Howard’s forced enthusiasm, his idiotic catch phrases, and his irritating voice. I don’t think we’ll get much better from Dantzler, but JD is a repository of Georgia history if that’s your thing. I agree that Jon Stinchcomb is a solid pick.

    • Yeah, I appreciate Scott’s service, but I just couldn’t listen to the guy. Many of Georgia’s biggest plays were (IMO) marred by his calls. The Peach Bowl hame against an OSU is a prime example. He sounded like a cow having a stroke.

  3. Can you people not see that anyone who has a free thought about Georgia football is being replaced? I mean Scott Howard was truly faithful to Georgia, but he didn’t kiss Brooksie’s ass as much as he wanted. So now we have someone who will never say a negative word about anything red and black. Is that what you want? I would prefer a little honest critique mixed in, but this change does reflect the times we’re living in. No one wants any criticism anymore.

Once again, Brooks screws over a part of Georgia history. Bridge, closed. Redcoats, screwed. Scott Howard, screwed. Uga, I’d hide if I were you…

  4. Boo. A lot of people didn’t like Scott and talked about out all the screaming but Thst was mostly early on. To me he grew into the job and he obviously loves the Dawgs. This is going to suck.

    • I’m not sure on Dantzler ‘s style fitting football, but I have to disagree on Howard growing into the job. He did improve on the screaming part, but he butchered some calls during historic seasons/moments that were well into his career. The CFP calls for the 2022 National Championship were really bad moments for him. He ruined the Ohio State victory with his forced cringy call of the missed field goal.

  5. Two ways to have handled this. Back in December “Scott, we won’t be renewing your contract after the BB season” or on April 23 “Scott we’re letting you go”. Make the change Josh, but handle it better. Now go work on finding a way for WiFi to work in the stadium during games to actually listen to the broadcast there.

    • Okay, I’m going to show how old I am, but does radio not work in the stadium? Bonus points if you use one of those Georgia caps with the built-in AM radio and little ear plugs. I had one when I was in college to listen to Munson.

      • I struggled to get it tuned in on my cheap radio. I use the Georgiadogs.com app at home hence the desire for WiFi. I don’t know tech but my understanding is WiFi could handle the crowd while just extra temp cell towers which I believe is what they are doing doesn’t cut it.

  6. I wish I could remember the quote and remember where it came from but I saw it posted innthe comments on GTP once. This reminds me of it. I won’t get it right but this is pretty close; There will be cataclysm, no sudden event signaling the end, just the slow steady disappearance of all the things we ever loved.

To me Scott was a connection to what came before. College football has just about turned itself into something I don’t recognize.

  7. I was not a fan of Scott Howard and do like JD for baseball, but I do question whether his style will be a fit for football. Howard just came across as too forced and I can’t forgive home for ruining the Ohio State CFP game win with that horrific call of the missed field goal. Also, “McConkey on his donkey” will haunt me until eternity.

Stinchcomb should be good. I think Shockley should be replaced as well. He is a DGD, but he isn’t very good either in my opinion.

  8. For me Dantzler is a POS! Didn’t like him in his after game show early on . Never will. He is cocky and a smartass. Love Jon, and DJ. Still like me some Chuck Dowdle. Guess it’s time to move on over too. Guess I will just call my own game! We have fallen very far as far as tradition. Gimme my Dixie Redcoats, Larry, tracks, Tara’s Theme, and a rousing rendition of Dixie!! , paper tickets, picture day and Varsity. Oh well, l ramble sometimes. Thanks for the memories and space to vent!! Go Dawgs!!!

  9. Not a Scott Howard fan if asked. Given the choice between the two I’d rather keep Scott. I’m really happy to see Jon Stinchcomb added to the broadcast.

The throwaway season remark really pissed me off.

  10. i would rather have had the other Stinchcomb but Jon is fine. Dantzler not a fan.
why didn’t Buck get a shot?

    • Buck is not a play-by-play guy; he did color on CSS back in the day. On the radio, he needs someone to play off of with his shtick – he and Kincaid were constantly doing the “put on” thing with one another, and he is doing it again with Kelly Crull.

  11. And yes, I agree, Scott was not the best, but he was certainly a connection to the best, and kept that thread and tradition alive.
Jeff is a clown and will be puckering up to kiss ass every chance he gets. His shtick on the post-game show has been stale for years. Am really surprised they gave it to him after all these years, but I guess this shows brown-nosing everyone with any ounce of pull will finally get you what you want, regardless of how undeserving you are. Sad!

    • Your post made me realize that he probably will not longer do the pregame and post-game shows. Maybe that means the welcomed end of Randy Savage in the Goodyear Blimp high above Sanford Stadium.

      • Not sure how if I’ll be able to survive not being reminded how beautiful the Hotel Indigo is at every commercial break…..

  12. Dantzler has probably always considered himself the “spiritual” heir apparent to Munson and I’m afraid he’s going to try to “be” Munson. He can’t be. No one can be.

  13. Want to see the initial list of those who interviewed, if any, to just hand this position Danzler is bad, do give him a pass, of sorts for his loss of a loved one….how long before we hear, ” Love ya Betty, down on the beach in Boca”…or even, “Thank you for the smiles from the Golden Isles, we love ya”…not sure if UGA football announcing is considered “The big leagues”, but it shore the fuck for some of us….plus “Big Stinch” will have to up his game a bit, maybe to help/cover for “Throw away Danzler” misfires, cause they are coming…GO DAWGS!!

  14. I don’t care either way because I don’t listen to the radio broadcast regularly, but Scott had the worst call in a big moment that I have ever heard in any sport when he gave us the, “No go, oo, ood” for the missed FG in the Ohio State semifinal.

  15. Howard has a great voice, but his calls were bad. Danzler may be better or not. Time will tell. Change was needed.

  16. I guess I’m not bothered by stuff a lot of yall are. I sought what was so awful about the end of the Ohio State game call. The worst thing I heard him do in a long time was innthe NC against TCU with “McConkey got on his donkey!” and that didn’t really bother me. It was corny but so what? Does stuff like really ruin the game for yall? Dantzler is a dumbass. That post game show from Hotel Indigo was/is way worse than anything Scott Howard ever did in my opinion.

  17. So UGAIII was the first national champion and a damn good looking Dawg. I grew up with Jeff and he wasn’t a very good golfer or playboy but the running joke we had about him in the men’s locker room when we were too young to be in there playing penny a point 7 card gin rummy and getting kicked out by our Dad’s and diving in the ponds for golfballs sneaking out meeting girls in the middle of the night was that Jeff memorized the sports section of the newspaper.

I used to ride around in an old Cutlass Supreme playing Beastie Boys Run DMC and La Di Da Di with Jeff Dantzler. His voice ain’t bad and his scholarship of sports trivia is unparalleled.

  18. I haven’t listened to a game on the radio since the 2006 Kentucky game. I am 47 so by the time i became a fan the games were either on tv or I could go to the game as I lived in Athens and the early to mid 90s were not a time of outrageous ticket prices or demand.
I know people complain about Howard and from the clips I have heard that is justified. No one would be able to replace Larry so Scott gets unfairly compared to the GOAT.
Maybe Dantzler will be better but as said above I wont be listening anyway.

  19. Howard had improved over the years from plain awful to only somewhat terrible. The simple fact is that it was hard to follow the game based on his play by play. He was slow and nondescript. He would forget to give down and distance or the score for extended periods of time. He also got excited over nothing. Glad to see him go.
