Let me whet your appetite with this.
If it’s wrong, I don’t want to be right. Let me say that Heupel deserves every level of disrespect he receives, ditto Lincoln Riley and Ryan Day. I kind of agree with Swinney, I have to admire a man and his principles. Never mind what those principles might’ve been pre-NIL, when the dealing was under the table and not over, but I digress.
The rest of them, meh. Of course, there’s our beloved Bobo.
The questions for today would be this:
- If not Bobo as our OC, then who?
- If you could sit down with Bobo and have a conversation with him about one thing he needs to change with his offensive philosophy, what would it be and why?
Discuss, and behave, you scamps.
Everyone on that list could easily get a comparable job with another program but one.
Agreed, Fox/CBS/NBC would never hire a clown like McAfee….
I can’t stand the guy either but sadly there would likely be a bidding war for McAfee.
I certainly like to think you are wrong, I mean if there is no place at major networks for DP47 it would make me sick to see PMc land completely on his feet if cut loose. He is a clown.
I would tell any OC that I want high percentage positive yard plays. We’re not going for style points, just wins. Spread the ball around and keep the defense guessing. Only throw long to back ‘em off occasionally or if someone is wide ass open.
1) whoever Kirby wants.
2) for the very few plays in a season where failure is not an option, never attack where the opponent has superior personnel than you do. Do the opposite. Find the match up that favors your talent. Just because it should work, doesn’t mean it will. The other team has players who make plays in these spots. Avoid them. Attack elsewhere.
Ditto to #1, all day, everyday, and twice on Sunday.
Convo w/ HoneyBobo? I’d ask what causes his route trees to have someone frequently open on a flyer? And, what coaching goes into our QB’s checkdowns?
Then I’d tell him I call him HoneyBobo as a joke, I think he’d find it funnier than it really is.
I’m in the camp that Bobo gets WAY more crap than he deserves. All OCs call plays that don’t work out or can be criticized. Bobo is a good OC and gets labeled or memed because of a few select plays over the years. He was the OC that set the UGA points per game record after all. He has has passing focused years like with Murray and more balanced attacks.
I do think Monken was better, but he did have all-time rosters and defenses to support him. Just think what Georgia and Murray could have accomplished if the defense was just 80% of what we had in 2021 or 2022. Interesting enough is that I think Bobo averaged more points against Bama than Monken did. At least before last season which may have changed that, but I haven’t looked that up.
I worry more about our current DC than I do about our OC.
True about Bobo averaging more points vs Bama than Monken.
Not trying to throw rocks, but an honest question: How much of the point total difference is due to Deboar (sp) rather than Saban on the Bama sideline? I would think it made some difference.
Bobo has faced both. He faced Saban a few times between 2007 until he left for CSU and then again in 2023.
2021 Bama was a lot better than 2023 Bama, and they’ve gotten worse every year since.
There are any number of competent offensive minds who have obtained their jobs based on actual merit rather than proximity to a school or friendship with the head coach. I had my eye on Kirby Moore at Mizzou before he took the head coaching job at Wazzou, Buster Faulkner has earned his way too Florida. I believe the list is quite a bit longer than blind process trusters think. Kirby is probably still the best HC in CFB, but that doesn’t mean he’s immune to blind spots and bad hires.
Anyone who still entertains the ridiculous comparisons with Todd Monken as if Bobo remotely measures up will violently disagree with me, but the football industry does not value Mike Bobo. I don’t believe he could obtain a comparable job outside of Athens regardless of all the alleged super secret job offers he turns down according to guys like Rusty Mansell. I don’t buy it. The offense has regressed every year since Bobo was promoted to OC and Georgia is 0-3 in elimination games while the offense averaged 20.3 ppg in those games. For those who like the Monken comparisons, his offense averaged over 50 ppg in three 2022 postseason games.
The one thing he needs to change is his offense needs to score more points in high stakes games against the best teams.
Just go ahead and put that on the tombstone of every OC who’s walked the face of the Earth….
We need to shut out the best offenses as well. Its called coachin’!
Some of us remember not making the seccg or the playoffs with Monken.
Hasn’t happened since he moved on though.
I think Bobo gets a too much blame. If you gave him the 2020 & 2021 offense and defense then give Monken what Bobo had last two seasons. I’m guessing Monken is not so popular.
Does offense at times infuriate me yep it does. I’ll bet Bobo is doing exactly what Kirby Smart wants from his offense. Rule #1 don’t let the offense put the defense in bad positions. Rule #2 score as much as possible without violating rule #1.
It’s the Kirby Smart show and his offense will reflect his wants.
CKS is all about RTDB and avoid being “chuck and duck” like your life depended on it. And he’s right.
The glaring hole for us as a program has been that we just haven’t had that perfect modern day college qb who pressures defenses with his arm and legs.
I keep hoping one day we will get (and keep) one of them, but players matter far more than coaches, x’s and o’s and play calling.
Culture and toughness are way above those. Sadly, far too many fans think we’re playing Madden. Its not that. Not even close.
I will say that as NIL and portal levels talent out and being a college coach becomes less and less attractive to coaches who are good enough for Sundays, in week and game day decision making is going to be a much greater deciding factor than it has in the past.
The best thing about all of it is that the game is getting back to LOS football. Its damn near impossible these days to be 2019 LSU or anything like that because you just can’t have or keep guys long enough to play ball like that.
You might be right if rule number 3 is to underperform when everything is on the line.
What about Bobo’s career leads you to believe he would have excelled when losing his starting qb less than a month prior to the season?
Winning 2 national championships or any playoff games whatsoever also hasn’t happened since Monken moved on. At least Bobo is able to get us into an expanded playoff even though he can’t manage to win a game. Let me know how soon to expect Bobo to fuel Georgia an undefeated season with the #1 OFEI offense that averages over 50 ppg in the SECCG + playoff. If he was on the Monken timeline it would have happened last season.
Using the 2020 Covid year as a serious datapoint is wild. Monken’s first year as OC and his projected starter at qb opts out right before the opener.
I think he overuses the play I call the “gut draw”, especially when it’s clearly not working. Also, I think he rotates the rb too much, even when one is hot. I don’t think he adjusts as well when things aren’t working, especially in really big games. Finally, every now and then, I think he calls a play that’s a little too cute, especially when we’re late in the game and near the goal line.
Of course, I know absolutely nothing about coaching or calling offenses, so there is that.
I know a lot about football. Probably more than most of the people here. In fact, I know enough about football to know how ridiculous it would be for me to purport to sit down and give Mike Bobo advice that would actually be helpful. Some people don’t know enough about football to realize that, which is understandable.
Then again, maybe some folks actually have hours per day each week during the season to upload games into Hudl and break down 11 individual performances on each play and then do the same for the upcoming opponent. That would probably be fun for a little while, but eventually everything becomes work.
Sir, this is the internet. We don’t allow reasoning here.
Part of fandom is criticizing coaches. Duh.
The trick is having the damn sense to know which thing needs criticizing and when you’re just talking out of your ass.
Far too many fans fall in the latter category.
I try to keep it light/tongue in cheek. Helps me stay sane and blow off steam. I have some beautiful screen pass memes that I share prolifically with my text group during games.
You don’t have to be an astronaut to understand that the guy who just crashed the shuttle into the side of a mountain isn’t very good at his job.
Hi Mike, thanks for the sit down. Let’s start with you describing your overall offensive philosophy. Next let’s talk QB choices. Carson was more of a pocket passer but my goodness the drops. What was happening there? You seem to prefer a runner like Gunner over other QB prospects with bigger arms who have come and left the program…why? You and Kirby demand our WRs be able to block exceptionally well to support our running attack and things like the WR quick screen at the expense of some really tall & fast WRs to open up the field…are we really a run first offense? Are you finding fewer traditional big RBs to recruit? Is that affecting your play calling and design? We’ve had some of the biggest and best NFL talent on the O-line but beset by injury and wildly inconsistent performance. Why do you think that is? You’ve had an incredibly long career calling plays…do you think DCs are catching up to your tendencies? What new wrinkles do you see and admire in other programs? In this era of NIL where you can no longer recruit and stockpile talent for a player’s full years of eligibility how does that affect your offensive scheme with such potentially high turnover? Finally, what’s your f*ING obsession with using small running backs on critical downs? Thanks for your time Coach. You’ve been a DGD. Thinking of retiring soon?
If Bobo had no personal ties to Kirby and wasn’t his college buddy, would he have his job? Would he have the resume from his past stints at UGA, Auburn, Carolina and Colorado State where Kirby would’ve sought him out to replace Monken? The answer is so obviously no. And that tells you everything you need to know.
Post of the day!
Seems then that Kirby needs to be run out of town on a rail.
Set the UGA season scoring average record with Hutson Mason at QB.
By scoring 60+ on Troy and a bad Kentucky team. He also had one of the greatest RB rooms in CFB history at his disposal. The offense didn’t even average 20 ppg in losses vs Tech and Florida which cost Georgia a playoff spot in 2014.
good grief.
Whichever one of you all that brings UGA basketball bad luck whenever you watch needs to stop watching.
There are not enough fans on earth who could stop watching that would turn the Dawgs into a proper basketball team.
I’m now a Kennesaw State fan. At least they aren’t embarrassing themselves.
Stupid me. I tuned into the basketball game tonight thinking we had a chance.
So it was YOU who puts the curse on us!
