Really Getting the Gang Back Together

Add another former Smart teammate to the Bulldogs’ coaching roster.

One of the most talented running backs in Georgia history is expected to return to the program in an off-field coaching role. DawgsHQ has learned that the Bulldogs are hiring Robert Edwards to replace support staffer David Hill, who left the program after the 2025 season for the running backs coach at Colorado State.

Hill’s official title at Georgia was player connections coordinator at Georgia. Edwards has spent the past 17 years coaching high school ball. It started at Arlington Christian School (Fairburn, Ga.) in 2009. He has also coached at Greene County High School, Riverwood High School, and, most recently, Washington High School where he starred as a two-way player in the early 1990s.

Who’s next? Hines Ward? *Puts hands together and looks to the sky*

Speaking of bringing back former Dawgs:

His clutch pick six helped to salvage a rough first year for Smart in Athens…here’s hoping he will continue to add some shine to the secondary that is poised to be a team strength heading into 2026.

  1. I remember watching Robert Edwards injure his knee against South Carolina. It was kind of like Bo Jackson’s bad injury. It didn’t look like anything bad.

      • Probably not enough wins, I think he had one winning season over the 4-5 years as coach.

        • A slightly sub-500 record at a non-power is now getting a local legend fired after 4 years in high school, sheesh…….

          • As much as he was a beloved former player, WACO did him kind of dirty. Being from there, I’ve seen a lot of people, friends included, who were not happy about the way it went down.

  2. Like having DawgsOn staff. Maybe l will know a little about coaches. At one time knew bio on almost all. Just a good feeling for me! CKS has it! I’m good!

  3. Hope Edwards’s role is to stand over Bobo in the booth, arms crossed, and just glare down and clear his throat when screen passes or a small, slow RB is about to be put in on 3rd downs.

    • Still a bobo guy! To me DGD. burners & tech, l will NEVER forget! Say today don’t criticize players in public! He is and always will be one of my guys!

      wille on of my guys!!

  4. I have been wondering about why Kirby hasn’t gotten Hines on staff. He was an All Pro and one of the most feared WR’s in the game. I’m thinking there might have been some “history” between the two, maybe when they played together. Kirby the DB and Hines blocking the “S” out of him. He certainly would be as good as our current WR coach.

    • Especially since Hines now has experience coaching WRs in college. It does seem strange that Hines never comes up in coaching discussions.

    • I’d really be surprised if there has not been talk of Ward returning to Georgia. Does Hines Ward at this point in his life want the meat grinder that comes with a full time job at Georgia?

I’d personally love to see it if he is all in. His other projects are doing well he doesn’t need the job.

    • I would wonder about the dynamics of being an All-Pro, Super Bowl MVP’s boss. Generally speaking, high performers are very focused on their own methodologies. Might not ever be a problem, but if I were CKS, I’d give it a thought.before making an offer.

  5. Good/great players don’t always make good coaches. Bobo and Kirby had similar performance playing for Georgia. Their performance coaching is light years apart.

  6. Pound for pound, Hines is one of the finest blocking WR’s in history, not to mention his receiving talents. I’d love for him to teach these players to properly play the WR position.
