Tuesday Refugee Roundtable: He’s Beck

So I posted earlier that Frazier was returning. Frazier later posted on his TikTok that it was never about the money.

If it wasn’t, then why wait to announce? Rumors swirl that he was looking for over a million, then others said he’s just achieved DGD status. I know that’s a designation we like to debate about around here, so I’ll ask this Roundtable question for today:

If it does turn out it was about the money, and Frazier develops a case of fumblitis again or has a subpar season, does he get shown the door like Beck did? Does haggling for more money make an athlete less of a DGD for taking care of his financials (and his family). Can’t say I fault the kid but the college football purists don’t always see it that way.

What’s your two cents about it?

  1. I would assume Kirby is considered one of the all time DGDs. If Kirby’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, said it’s not about the money, would anyone believe him?

  2. I like the Herschel reference.

Like #34, Frazier and the current college players are living in a new landscape. They are just playing by the new rules and I don’t blame them for doing what is best from a financial standpoint. I’m sure plenty of Georgia fans will be sleeping with one eye open so to speak in regards to Nate and any others who are walking the same path waiting for fumbles or lack of performance so they can pounce.

I don’t blame Beck the decision he made and would have thought he was stupid if he didn’t take the 4 million from Da U. At that point there wasn’t even a guarantee he would be healthy and ready to go for the season so I don’t blame Kirby for not paying to keep him. I think Beck’s biggest issue is his personality. He doesn’t come across as very likeable unlike someone like Frazier who comes across as fun and outgoing. Beck has an image of being aloof and not someone who has a bunch of friends. I feel that is the biggest reason Georgia fans don’t like him and if everything else was the same with his situation except he had the personality of Jordan Davis then Georgia fans wouldn’t see him in the nearly such a negative light.

    • I don’t disagree 222, but WTF is wrong with people? This isn’t fucking Junior High School. People need to grow the fuck up. Stet is one of my favorite DGD’s and he’s a real prick. I don’t think da U is concerned with his not being the most popular dude on campus.

      • I don’t think him being popular in general is important either, but i don’t think his personality allows him to be close with teammates either though, which I do think matters. I was pointing that out really as reason Georgia fans tend not to like him.

  3. I think if you’re not draft eligible and have to make an announcement that you’re coming back, you’re not DGD material.

  4. Player or coach speak. When they tell you it’s not about the money. It’s always about the money.

CFB is all about the money. Why shouldn’t players get theirs.

In a world full of Lane Kiffin type coaches it’s hard for me to blame players for maximizing their short shelf life opportunities.

That I don’t like won’t affect it at all.

    • A DGD isn’t in it solely for the money but if one makes bag that’s fine. Nate showed potential his first year, was a fighter last season, great that he’s returning and has a foot in the door to DGD status waiting for the one big game he just takes over. If he can go off on a rival next year he’s fully in.

  5. As a fan, I really dislike the constant talk about and angling/manipulating for more money, but I get it. The players are operating well within the rules, or at least the unwritten ones. It’s hard to fault someone who’s trying to maximize their earning potential, especially with the panic spending by alot of athletic associations to secure top talent. Thankfully, I’m guessing we’re not in the panic spending group.

  6. We cannot even agree on what qualifies as being a DGD around here to begin with, so I have no idea on whether asking for more money would disqualify someone entirely. I don’t think so. One thought I have is that Frazier is good and we need him, but he isn’t a game changer like we got used to having with Chubb, Michel, Gurley, even Swift. How much NIL would those guys be worth?

    • Can you imagine what the market would’ve been for Chubb, Michel, Carter, and Bellamy when they all decided to come back for the 2017 season?

Assuming the “players have always been getting paid” mindset, I wonder what they got then versus what they’d get now.

      • Good question. Were they getting millions then vs thousands via bagged cash and handshakes? If so, how did they hide it? Or better yet, how did we convince them to hide it? Beck didn’t have to hide his and bought a damn Lamborghini.

    • Soooooooooo, whut you’re telling me is that “Be true to your school”, may not apply here, maybe I missed something, #3 sure looked like a determined RB in 2025 season, should his original nil agreement have expired, then a couple of day$ of nil conver$ation took place, all $ide$ agreed and moving forward is a done deal…this is college athletics, nothing more, nothing less….always thought being tagged with “DGD”, took a few years away from UGA, time to marinade and reflect…as is with life at UGA, there are always exceptions to the standard….GO DAWGS!!

      • This UGA student athlete, may not epitomize a “DGD”, but always repped UGA, all around the globe….Mr. John Robert Isner…GO DAWGS!! (he is one many UGA grads that are “DGD”)

    • Chubb and Michel loved Georgia enough to come back their senior year. They probably would have told Kirby, coach give me what you think I’m worth and lets play ball.

  7. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

  8. Each individual has his/her own criteria for that moniker. For me, if Frazier jumps to the league after next year, he’s a DGD. If he graduates and transfers and doesn’t burn bridges as he leaves, he’s like a DGD. If he transfers without a degree in hand, he’s doesn’t qualify.

Yes, I understand that means AD Mitchell, no matter his contribution between the white lines is not a DGD in my book (that also doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate his contribution on the field).

      • I was thinking about this the other day. Bennett catches hell about not graduating, but I am guessing UGA didn’t except many credits from his time at Jones College. He possibly even had to retake UGA core classes at Jones when he first transferred there. Colleges and Universities can be a bunch of greedy assholes.

        • Stetson would have to be DGD #1 of all time.

However, if someone would have dangled cash in front of him at most any point along the way, he’d have taken it a ran.

That’s on Kirby and Monken and Coley. They didn’t appreciate what they had.

Neither did I. And I wasn’t a full convert until the OSU game.

          • Dang we actually agree on something.

I was fully converted during the final 10 minutes in Indy.

  9. When it’s not about the money, it’s ALWAYS about the money.

As far as DGDs, who cares? Like the dudes you like.

  10. IMO DGD status is very subjective. It’s more of an overall feeling about a player. Not just productivity. Nate hasn’t reached the status at this point with me, but he’s close. I don’t know what he would have to do in order to reach DGD status but I’ll know it when I see it. Negotiating for more money has nothing to do with it. This is America! Not some commie college campus.

  11. It sucks when we lose a player via transfer, and as long as leave on good terms, it’s hard to toss stones at someone for leaving if they have a better opportunity. Facts are that most people do that in their own lives. Seems fair that status gets revoked when you show your ass after you leave a la Jermaine Burton. F that guy. But now I find myself with mixed feelings because Will Muschamp.. he gave it all for the G but man did he do his best to talk smack at UF and USC which was, of course, all for show, but still.

  12. This is dumb. Of course, he can achieve DGD status with another season like this one. Players get paid now. That’s the reality. The genie is out of the bottle and he ain’t going back in. We need to recalibrate our understanding of this.

  13. As Andy Warhol once said: “One man’s DGD is another man’s trash.” It’s all in your subjective opinion.

In my humble opinion, making someone squirm a little to get the right price ain’t a sin. But Nate’s got a ways to go to reach DGD status.

  14. My definition of a DGD is arbitrary and capricious. As of today, the player needs to have finished his career at UGA, not a different school. Also definitely have not done anything to totally embarrass us. Cannot be a complete asshole either. May change next week. Stay tuned.

  15. A DGD is one who prepares his mind and body to perform. He makes few, if any, mental errors. Never the same one twice. He never wavers under fire. He plays with discipline and physicality. If he can play with what injuries he has, he plays. You never have to ask if he gives a fuck about whether we win the game. And he never puts the w in jeopardy due to selfishness. He doesn’t run his mouth about an opponent before or after games. If he runs his mouth during the game its because he can back it up. If an opponent gets out of line with a teammate, it is appropriately and immediately addressed.

In short, a DGD is a winner in all things football.

As far as the rest, I think its romanticized bullshit and/or none of my damn business.
