Tuesday Refugee Roundtable: Getting the Band Back Together

Dammit, Bobo.

Folks are a little miffed at the outcome of the Ravens game last night, and fingers are pointed at Monken. While at the beach last week an Arkansas fan saw my Georgia hat and made some small talk, and I mentioned we’d be happy to have the Pitt Boss back in Athens. He said you could gladly have him. Likewise, Napier is probably done at Florida and who knows what’s about to happen with Shane Beamer, as the Carolina fans believe he might be traveling in a UFO to Blacksburg right now.

Today’s Roundtable topic is this: which former Smart colleague or coach would you want to have back in Athens, and why? Also, Napier was a former Saban staffer…would he have a role in Georgia’s staff? Wouldn’t it be the most Kirby thing to take Florida’s trash and rebuild him like Saban did with so many former coaches?

Have at it.

  1. Hire Nick Saban as consultant so we can get the benefit of the doubt from pollsters and the refs will see things our way.

      • Are dismissed coaches really a good hire, especially, right after they received that big beautiful buy out check, should this edition of UGA football “D” be above standard, Coach Schumanns name will be out there again…Would CKS make that change, if the OLine under performs, for whatever reason, PittBoss might be a feelgood hire, he seems to recruit, would he be a long term addition?…GO DAWGS!!

  2. I’m with you elbertadawg, Pittman. He was a helluva recruiter, but he could coach-em up also.

  3. Lane Kiffen OC
    Sam Pittman OL
Billy Napier: Mrs. Kirby’s driver (Lights his victory cigar with $100 bill after the annual thrashing of the handbags on national TV, says thanks to the uf faithful for the opportunity)

    Dan Lanning DC
    Will Muschamp LBC

    • I just figured Monken was done with college football. If he were willing to come back yes, I’d gladly welcome him. We don’t have to fire Bobo. Let him stay on as a consultant.

  4. Same Pittman. I don’t hate Searles but Pittman was the best there has ever been at coaching offensive linemen.

  5. I’d take Monken back in a second. Won 2 natty’s with a walk-on QB! I’d take Pittman too, though just about anyone would be a huge upgrade over Searels.

  6. I think Dan Lanning still has a lot of runway left…and that dude’s intensity matches CKS…I like Boom and others, but Ole Danny boy would ratchet that defense back into overdrive.

I would want a proven coordinator that is unparalleled in recruiting…so my preference would be a “younger” buck that is snorting poprocks and shooting Jolt cola intravenously…Dan is in that mold

  7. If I had to choose one, I’d take Pittman over Monken. We need an upgrade in OL coaching, and even Monken would have a hard time scheming with the current turnstiles on the right side. Despite his preference for the screen pass, I think Bobo would be just fine if we could open bigger holes in the run game and give Gunner more time in the pocket.

  8. Fran Brown, Dan Lanning, Sam Pittman, Will Muschamp, Todd Monken, Buster Faulkner, and Shane Beamer. I would welcome them all back but I think logically the only actual candidate would be Faulkner. Maybe Monken.

  9. Pittman for Searls is a great deal.

The rest of the coaches I would like back are. Will Muschamp being on staff is not the same as coaching. Bring Boom back along with Todd Monken. Absolutely no to Napier in any shape or form.

I believe the Pitboss is staying in Arkansas after being fired. Monken doesn’t seem to enjoy CFB as much as the league. That leaves Muschamp I’m hopeful he wants to return to on field coaching.

  10. Honestly, I don’t think we need to be hiring older guys no matter the pedigree unless it is as an analyst or some specific thing that Kirby knows about and needs. I would like to see Faulkner here, because he is an up-and-comer and just to get him out of Atlanta, and Fran Brown, maybe, but that’s about it.

  11. Including Kirby’s former colleagues, if we could get Jeremy Pruitt’s coaching acumen without Jeremy Pruitt’s personality, I’d take it. His defenses always seemed to bring pressure on opposing QBs and generate a lot of turnovers while still being fundamentally sound.

  12. Like apparently almost everyone else, I’d first opt for Pittman or Matt Luke. But since you opened it up for Smart’s former “colleagues” as well as coaches, I’m gonna let that mean former teammates and say I’d love to see Hines Ward on the sidelines. I don’t really care whether he continues coaching WRs as at AZ State or has some other role. His work ethic is legendary, he was a Swiss army knife player for us, and NFL coaches once named him the smartest non-QB player in the league. But I bet Ward coached WRs would seriously help compensate for blocking deficiencies in the O line!

  13. Hard no on Napier…don’t bring that swamp stink here. Monken can’t get paid like NFL coordinator money. Let Pittman retire. Doubt he’s up to recruiting and full time OL coaching, won’t mesh with Searels as an analyst. Fran Brown likely to get an even better HC gig…good for him. Faulkner maybe. Doing more with less at Tech but because of that, not really seeing a dynamic offensive mind, just good use of limited talent. Lanning likely to get a look from the NFL and same problem as Monken…much bigger paycheck at the next level. Boom’s health probably means he’s done. Shane won’t come back and not sure what his strength is beyond special teams.

So basically, once they gone, they gone. I’d like to see both Hines and Champ get a look for potential. We need to be looking at the next best dudes for OL, OC and DC for various reasons, but I don’t see those 3 positions being held by the same 3 guys for 3 more years.
