2016 aside, it’s safe to say that Kirby has owned the Vols as the Dawgs head coach. I wonder why he has such an appetite for sticking it to the Hillbillies?
I was at that one as a junior at UGA, and that damned kick landed right on us from where we were sitting, among a sea of orange. Horrible feeling, horrible end to a game that I’ve rehashed here too many times to count. Robert Edwards, what could’ve been…Edwards was averaging ten yards per carry before he went down with a foot injury. A Kirby Smart interception late gave us a chance to win until Brice Hunter dropped a Mike Bobo pass late, Langley missed a long attempt, and the rest is history.
Several of you posted already, but the mission this weekend is clear – (1) win and (2) no Kneeland turf-related injuries, please.
Oh, and hitting nine in a row, a series-longest win streak, would be lovely as well. Send those jagoffs home crying, one more time, from their own house.
The late drop by Hunter (I think) for a sure first down, possibly touchdown lives in my memory.
It was. Hit him right in the hands.
His eyes were elsewhere.
I’ll bet he blamed Bobo.
At a minimum, if I remember correctly, the Dawgs are able to run the remainder of the game clock where the game ends with a Langley FG or a tie if Hunter makes the catch.
Always “One play away” Ray.
There were a number of games where we were quite a bit further away than just that.
I know.
Hate to nitpick, but I think he was averaging 12.4 ypc…
The last two quarters vs USC and the first quarter plus a little in Knoxville was just unreal.
Robert was averaging 2 tds a quarter over that period.
1995 might have seen our best OL ever and it was totally wasted…
Two weeks later Bobo got high-lowed and destroyed his knee. Went into the Clemson game a couple weeks later with Torin Kirtsey as running back and Brian Smith at QB. Was a bit of a cursed season.
Yep. And we won!
Torin had 190 yards on 40 carries at all of about 160 lbs.
The tale of the 1995 season can’t be told enough. The highs and lows and frustrations and “what ifs” were and are something to behold.
40 years later and its still one of my favorite seasons as a fan. As brutal as it was, it still represents affirmation as to why I gear up every Saturday and watch my dawgs play.
Not all legends win shit and Hines Ward is a damn legend.
Dude… you’re aging us all by a decade. quit it.
Maths are hard…
All the RBs got hurt. Best LB and DT got hurt as well. B Smith was undefeated as a starter.
and it is why the hobnail boot call and game was even more epic and historic as we crawled out of the wilderness against those hilljacks
We had beat them at home the year before.
Just saying….
I hate the hillbillies! I hate ORANGE! I hate obknoxiousville, I hate Phat Phil and his donut shoppe. I love seeing Tennessee U in the far wastelands! Nothing sucks like the big Orange!
Yeah that was the field storming game and Quincy’s last season
1999 me could not imagine having the series lead over Tennessee, much less going for 9 *straight* wins….. At least we’d beaten Florida relatively recently at that point to interrupt their streak….
Aren’t they bringing in Dolly Parton and Peyton Manning, like last time we played them at utk?
Just wondering what their fake juice choice is this time.
So the Goff years were good for something after all?
Thanks for the painful memory. I was there as I was on the 1995 team. Brice did drop a pass…but Robert Edwards getting hurt was worse. They couldn’t stop him.
I think Brian Smith got hurt at the game in Oxford that year, and he had been coming on pretty well himself. Panic played that Friday night before the game, which was nice;)
I think he got hurt after the Clemson start and before the Florida game. Don’t recall which.
After looking awful vs. bama Hines came on pretty well after Smith went down.
