Friday Question – The Georgia Home Game Hype Song

Let’s put Redcoat traditions on the back burner here, and play with a Friday question surrounding this:

There’s some quality music aficionados around here, so let’s hear it…what would be a good Georgia hype song?

Bonus commentary: what would you change to the in-game production of game days to make the environment more electric?

  1. The fiddle battle in The Devil went down to Georgia would get folks going.

  2. In tune/vocal harmony with 93,000 of my closest friends screaming ”
    Livin’ easy
    Lovin’ free
Season ticket on a one way ride
    Askin’ nothin’
    Leave me be
    Takin’ everythin’ in stride
    Don’t need reason
    Don’t need ehyme
Ain’t nothin’ that I’d rather do
    Goin’ down
    Party time
My friends are gonna’ be there too”….

    • The church ladies would complain.

If I’m going with a Bon Scott contribution its the chorus to “If you want blood, you got it.”

  3. Before everyone recommends 50 year old songs, just remember that most of these kids have never heard of it. They are gonna want a modern rap or dance tune.

    • In that case we should just wait on those kids to come on here and give their opinion.

  4. Doesn’t matter because all of the students can’t be bothered to stay until Light Up Sanford even for an early evening 4th quarter.

  5. Devil Went Down to Georgia but why not have the Redcoats just play

  6. Needs to be an Athens band or at least a Georgia band/artist.

REM, B52s, whatever rap artists are somewhat local, something home grown. I love the Who as much or more than most, but I’ve never understood what Baba O’Reilly had to do with Dawgs football (other than the line “teenage wasteland” of course).

Here’s an off the wall suggestion:

    • How they never made it big is amazing to me…

I saw them at the Georgia Theater around 1990 or so. The lead singer came out in an all white one piece outfit and says:

I’m Baby Jean Kennedy here to make love to you all night long.

Then she leans back until her hair hits this stage and belts out:

      There is no other!

      • Saw them on Jekyll Island back in the late 70’s. The put on a hell of a show.

      • Man. That brings back some memories. I smoked a lotta…..I uh, well, I had a lot of fun back listening to some MF.

    • If we’re going with the B52’s Quiche Lorraine is about a dog. It would be hilarious. To me at least. Not so much anybody else. I was at UGA when R.E.M. and the B52’s were just starting out. I had Rock Lobster on a 45. Woke my roommates up every Friday morning blasting it out. They hated it.

    • That brings back the memories! HS sophomore went to see Kansas. Opener was some band named Mother’s Finest. An hour later, as the crowd went nuts, my buddy turned to me and yelled “HOLY SHIT!!” That said it all

  7. This was my vote on the Twitter thread. It’s kind of sing-along…they could show the video or they could splice in images of Georgia Supermen…Bennett, Bowers, McConkey, Tardits, Woerner, Lindsay Scott, Walker flying through the air…man, that would be great.

  8. Not sure REM sets the right tone but “Orange Crush” does have a nice ring to it.

    • Second choice would be the chorus to Boom by POD.

Sets the right tone in my mind:

      “Boom!

      Here comes the Boom!

      Ready or not,

here comes the boys from the South

      Boom!

      Here comes the Boom!

      How you like me now?”

Pair up some on field “booms” so they are synched with the words and done.

      • They used to play this with some local station when they were doing commercials for the upcoming SEC weekend games. It was whatever channel carried the Jefferson Pilot games…and it absolutely meshed well.

  9. I am in favor of the Redcoats. I have asked Josh to let the ban play. I have offered to pay for speakers to help pipe the band to the far corners of the stadium. Josh did put tow small virtually useless speakers on the north side piping the band music. If you have been to Tennessee, I have to say they have the right idea on piping their bank music around the entirety of the stadium through powerful speakers.

  10. Can’t beat the Classics. I still remember him on the sidelines singing that along with the Redcoat band.

  11. Love this question as a topic…a lot of teams are doing some cool stuff with respect to music traditions and getting the fans energized for the game. Enter Sandman at VT is a huge crowd pleaser, Jump Around at Wisconsin makes for an awesome 4th quarter start, and I’ll even give it to South Carolina with Sandstorm…fans are totally juiced when that hits. Some cool ideas above and I’ll throw out one more…the intro for Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit could be a great pump up song for certain situations. All the Gen Z’ers wearing Nirvana shirts should actually know at least one of their songs.

  12. This is an older song, but it’s actually perfect. Easy to sing to. Matches up nicely with Enter Krypton, and every student at UGA knows REM.

  13. The thing about music for the band to play is that it has to sound good with winds and percussion because that is what the band has to work with. [Side note: back in the 70s the band at half time wheeled out a big ass amplifier and electric bass that rocked, but apparently that is not happening now.] Lots of old music, i.e., probably public domain and therefore free, lends itself well to the band’s instruments. THAXTED (Jupiter, from the The Planets) is a good example, but maybe a bit slow tempo. JERUSALEM is British military song from WWI that is more up tempo, and builds to a nice crescendo. Actual lyric sample:
Bring me my bow of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spear, O clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire.
But if you want something more current I always thought Paul Simon’s “You can Call Me Al” would sound great with the Redcoats. But $$$, I’m sure.

  14. Hear me out…night game kill the lights, In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins plays. Lots of slow motion, black and white video of the past, drum solo kicks it into the present, in color, with the red lights syncing with the drums and the main lights blasting on right after. Or are they already doing that…

    • They used to play in the air tonight when Richt was coach. The drumline always played with it. I like the pregame and fourth quarter now. Light up the night is so fun.

  15. Not an Athens band, but Follow For Now did a cover of She Watch Channel Zero.

The slow intro could be cut down to get to the big build-up at 1:20. Remove the lyrics and just do the instrumental and it would rock Sanford.

    • I believe they play Shout at the start of the 4th quarter at Oregon games and I love it. After all, they did film Animal House on the Oregon campus after dozens of schools refused to let them use their campus.

BTW, if you ever want to read a fun, light-hearted book, check out Fat, Drunk, and Stupid: The Inside Story Behind the Making of Animal House.

  16. I love the topic and think you have to have some key ingredients:
    1) The song either needs to be about Georgia (state) or by a band from Georgia
    2) Obviously it must be up beat
    3) and this is the tough one for me, the song has to resonate with current college students and older generations.

Unfortunately, this likely rules out R.E.M. though I do like the odea of “Superman.” The bands from Georgia I love aren’t likely to have any songs familiar enough with the current generation of college kids. It would be cool to have something from Drivin’ N’ Cryin’, R.E.M., Wild Feathers, James Brown, WSP, or Jupiter Coyote, etc., but don’t think any of those would work. I think that leaves us with something from a Country artist from Georgia like Alan Jackson, Zac Brown, Travis Tritt, etc. or something from Outkast, Usher, Ludacris, or Migos. There is also The Allman Brothers and Black Crowes. I’m thinking the best options to find something that will work across generations is going to be either the Allman Brothers, Zac Brown, or …

I just had something jump into my head. Otis Redding and the Black Crowes are both from Georgia. It would be pretty cool if the Red Coats played “Hard to Handle” by Otis Redding and covered by the Black Crowes with the crowd singing along to it. Or maybe just play the Black Crowes version over the PA system since it has more energy than the original.

They have played it before, but “Chicken Fried” by Zac Brown would probably work. It was a big hit that multiple generations know. Not my favorite, but would probably be popular.

  17. Here it is. The band can play it, can use the recording. It’s old but everyone knows it. Its a true crowd pleaser too. Covers everything. Tell me I’m wrong.
Its upbeat. it’s fun. Make errybody feel good. Folks would be lighting up the stadium and dancing in the aisles. And it is a classic too.

  18. For something old school maybe Georgia by Boz Scaggs. For something new maybe Thunderstruck by AC/DC

  19. “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More”. Starts with the guitar riff. Redcoats join in to the finish.

  20. Chappell Roan, “Pink Pony Club”

    Just kidding.

    Smashing Pumpkins, “Today”

  21. I say you make Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting and make that the 4th quarter song. Then you can redo pregame and go younger with hip hop to get the youngsters going early.
