UnderDawgs, For the First Time in Forever

Saw this on the comments boards and on Twix last night, but Georgia will enter a game as the underdog for the first time since the season opener against Clemson in Charlotte…in 2021.

The line got wider out to 5.5 yesterday and stabilized at Texas as a five point favorite. No, it’s not because of injuries or anything else, apparently some well-respected action caused it to move (maybe heavy betting on Texas to cover the 2.5?) but either way it’s kind of amazing to think we’ve been favored that long through this period of time. From September 4th forward, Georgia has been favored in every game since. Take into consideration there’s been games in that time against number 1 teams…shut my mouth.

Also this:

Alabama is an easy team to hate, but what a remarkable run it’s been for the ‘Dawgs otherwise. If you could’ve told my 1990s version of myself that there would’ve ever been a span of Georgia football like this, I’d have kicked my older self in the nuts.

Got a streak to maintain and a new streak to start. Let’s TCB, Dawgs.

  1. Anyone ever seen a line move like that? I can’t recall one where a qb hadn’t been ruled out for some unanticipated reason.

How/why did the line setters miss it by that much? Where is all that money coming in from?

    • If you watch our games, and you watch Texas, I can see the 5 points. We certainly have the potential to go into Austin and quiet the crowd/leave with the win, but we haven’t shown that much of it this season. Second half of Clemson and second half of Bama are really the only two instances where I’ve felt like we played up to our potential. That’s not much out of 6 total games so far.

I’m hoping the challenge makes the team focused and they come out firing on all cylinders. But I was hoping for that at Bama as well.

      • We’ve gotten into a bit of a habit of playing to the level of the opponent when they aren’t that great. When we’ve played top ten teams, not Bama, we’ve been pretty dominant since the 2020 peach bowl when we beat #8 Cincinnati:

        2021:

        #3 Clemson 10-3
        #8 Arkansas 37-0
        #2 Michigan 34-11

        2022:

        #1 Tennessee 27-13
        #4 OSU 42-41
        #3 TCU 65-7

        2023:

        #9 Ole Miss 52-17
        #5 FSU 63-3

        (9 straight wins)

        2024:

        #1 Texas ???

No covers of +5 points vs. top ten teams not named bammer over that time. If we had been +5 in those we’re 8-1 vs. the line over those 9 with OSU being the sole exception.

#8 UF in 2020 when Stet got knocked out up 14-0 would be the last one we lost to a top ten team. The 2019 seccg vs. lsu would be the last legit whoopin’ by a team not bammer. Texas ain’t 2019 LSU.

I wouldn’t lay more than 2.5. At 3.5 and up I’d have to go the other way.

It will be interesting to see if the line doesn’t drop Saturday afternoon. The sharps may see a play here. In this decade, games vs. bama and weak outings vs weak teams has not translated into success for top ten teams vs. uga.

We’ve won them all and usually its a beatdown. I also like the optics of people taking shots at Kirby. I think our roster is going to take that personal without him having to say a word.

        • The optimist in me agrees with your argument. The purely logical side says this 2024 team hasn’t shown (yet) they are the same as the past 3 years.

      • This team has not shown to be disciplined enough to win a game against this Texas team.
This defense has not looked like a Kirby Smart coached defense all year. Kirby talks eye discipline, this team has very little. This defense does not seem to play like they are focused the entire game or from play to play.
The OL is soft and can not open run lanes. What skill guy on this team scares the opposing DC? Beck looks like he is not 100%.
Sure there is talent on this team but they don’t seem hungry and disciplined enough to win against teams that are close in talent. All the off season traffic stuff should have been a sign this team isn’t as focused on being good ‘teammates” and is more focused on self.
Just my opinion but this years UGA team is not a championship team.

    • There are 30 million people in texas and has the number # gdp in the nation; they’s a lotta cabbage in texas.

      • (#2 by volume and 16 per capita) but yes there is a lot of oil $ sloshing around in Texas. I would suspect that’s what driving the movement in the line.

Its almost as if Vegas wanted to attract Texas bets, then hedge and a georgia win means they take most of what has been bet home with them.

Hard to imagine the line setters simply missed it that bad with their opening number. Those fuckers ain’t dumb.

      • Let’s hope Mattress Mack’s(Jim McIngvate) record against the Dawgs holds true: “McIngvale has lost $9.2 million betting on the last two CFP National Championship games.[29] In 2022, he bet $6.2 million on the Alabama Crimson Tide to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs; Georgia won, 33–18. A year later, he once again bet against the Bulldogs, putting $3 million on the TCU Horned Frogs to pull an upset. Georgia instead won a second straight championship, 65–7, to date the biggest blowout ever in an FBS bowl game.”

  2. If there’s a lot of volume on Texas AND the line doesn’t move, that makes me wonder. Usually, that’s good news for the side the public is NOT on i.e. Georgia.

  3. Late betting on Friday will show were the smart money is backing. Vegas does not typically miss by this much.

  4. I’m excited to see how we play on Saturday. We’re a talented team that has shown alot of warts so far but you just never know. I’ve watched many teams (not named GA) struggle through part of a season only to have it all come together at some point. I would love to see that this weekend & I think we’ll know alot more about this year’s Dawgs come late Saturday night. After the Bama game I just have no feel for how good, or bad, this team is & maybe this is the test needed to bring out the best in these guys. One thing they need is for Beck to stop the turnovers. He’s been way too careless with some throws, particularly on 1st down. Maybe we can get healthier on the OL & DL & be a serious threat by the end of the season. Right now, IMHO which means squat, we’re not playing like a top 5 team. Here’s hoping that changes this weekend!

  5. If we play a complete game and get beat, I’m okay with that. If we fart around for half the game, we may get run out of the stadium.

I thought before the season that we may lose at Bama and Texas and still have a good shot at being tournament champion. I’m looking to see us show that we can still be a champion this Saturday night.
