These are two really, really valid points. At least, they’re valid for the CFP idiocy, anyway.
First:
I mean, they’re not wrong at all, really. Also:
It appears branding matters. Except for Notre Dame. *snickers*

Miami beat ND is the only thing I can come up with.
That’s the difference, and there’s no way the other Power 4 conference ADs on the committee were going to allow the ACC to be shut out. That’s political capital right there that ND doesn’t have.
Duke’s win in the WSOCP is what put the committee into the position where JMU had to get the “last spot” and Miami placed over Notre Dame. If UVA wins on Saturday night, Virginia gets the slot, and the committee then rationalizes Miami and Notre Dame by saying they had ND above Miami throughout the process.
The SEC rage-baiters can only blame ESPN, Greg Sankey and Alabama, but many of those people like Tim Brando are just idiots.
Only reason I can think of is Mickey needed that ACC and Miami market.
Don’t believe the “U” stirs nationally, outside of miami beach time, might be more interest in the “pardoning of the pig”…
ACC Market?
It’s not the eyeballs. It’s the whole concept of keeping them in the coalition. Those were political decisions to include Miami and Alabama at the expense of Notre Dame. They went with the choices that would cause the least friction among the partners, especially with Notre Dame’s secret MOU in their pocket that will “fix” this problem next year and tie the committee’s hands.
What is an MOU?
M-O-U: Memorandum of Understanding. It’s what ND has with the CFP that guarantees them a slot starting in 2026 if they’re ranked top 12(?).
M-O-U-S-E: The assholes that caused all this michegas.
This issue isn’t binding, till “cry like a chumpion” is inside the top 12, then it’s binding, according to the gippers…GO DAWGS!!
Doesn’t the MOU state that if ND is ranked in the top 12 at the beginning of the season (fluid process) that they’re automatically in? I though I saw that somewhere..maybe not.
Sigh. Again, remember what the ESPN Invitational is. The ACC, Big 12, Big Ten and the SEC signed up to rake in money rather than serve some national purpose of establishing which college team is the best. The crowning of a tournament champion is the vehicle to make money. The big purpose is to cash Big checks.
The system requires all 4 power conferences to.participate. If the ACC and Big 12 don’t benefit then they provide 2 votes that could change the Big Ten’s and SEC’s power in the decision making. Thus, the SEC and Big Ten want ACC in the brackets rather than being on the outside causing more problems. The whole system requires the public to believe the fiction that it is a real championship tournament so the elaborate Committee votes and explanations.
This. And the only people who can stop this madness are the petty, corrupt and ignorant university presidents. Fixing the system means a lot of the current players don’t get a seat at the table and share of the money (ahem…committee members, Pat McAfee clowns, ADs, etc.). I’m guessing Nick Saban did the math and earns more doing TV than he would as Commissioner.
Couldn’t leave a “major” conference out.
With the SEC move to 9 conference games, let’s take our 4 top teams and run our own playoff and declare our league champion the National Champs. This would add only 1 extra weekend to the schedule. Let Jacksonville, Orlando, New Orleans, Dallas, Nashville, Houston bid for the semifinal games. New TV contract would need to be created, sponsorship would be easy and would make the other playoff insignificant. Current TV viewership already supports this would be a ratings bonanza.
ESPN would never go for this, and Disney owns the media rights exclusively.
EE, has CBS/ESPN made the SEC bigger & better or has the SEC product(s) been bigger/better and the networks are capitalizing on the League?
All the money laid out to the conference, the networks are still making bank. We are a collective group of universities that educate the people that are sitting in the decision making and production of the networks content. Why not put the education we are providing to the young women and men and turn that into a business model to start our own network? Most of us here grew up during the infancy of ESPN and can laugh at their program content during those first few years.
Let’s say we (SEC universities) project a launch date for our own network of January 2030. The SEC office and the universities starting banking the Disney money to the tune of 50-100 million a year. I think 500 million would be good seed money to start a venue of that type. Regions Bank would probably float a loan for any additional start up cost.
“Most of us here grew up during the infancy of ESPN and can laugh at their program content during those first few years.”
Hey – I liked the lumberjack and truck pulling competitions! 😉
I still like Australian rules Football.
I enjoyed the clay shooting competitions and old reruns of “Home Run Derby” myself – were a lot better than 24 hours of idiots screaming at each other!
I’m sure Disney attorneys (in-house and external) have made sure that won’t happen while this contract is in place. There’s a reason Texas couldn’t go to the Big 10 or the Pac 12. It was the contract structure of the LHN.
It’s a symbiotic relationship. Disney provides the delivery platform, and the SEC delivers the content to go across the platform.
Key phrase there is “while this contract is in place”. We don’t have to wait for the contract to expire to make plans and thereby signal the intent to let it expire and go our own way. Doing that with or without the B1G would make Disney nervous at the very least. Plus, if the SEC wants to do that it takes years of planning. Can’t wait until the contract expires to start.
The Pac 12 tried this and failed miserably.
Hmmm. I wonder what the difference is between the Pac 12 and the SEC in terms of eyeballs and seats in the stands?
Actually I am interested in where you believe the value is. Are the networks responsible for our (The SEC’s) success, or is the product the SEC provides attractive enough. If given the opportunity, would CBS (or any other network) get into a bidding war if the contract was up at year end?
The SEC is responsible for the on-field success. I also don’t think the SEC would be very good at building and running a media company. The SEC Network is managed by ESPN and co-branded with the WWL.
“I also don’t think the SEC would be very good at building and running a media company.”
Why not? I do agree that it is a lot to bite off by yourself, but you could partner with any number of companies – Paramount, for example, seems to have an endless thirst for programming and an endless cash pot to pull from, and others: FUBO, YouTube, CBS (I wish), Apple, Prime, Netfilx, etc. etc. Plus, between The Terry College of Business and the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication there is plenty of expertise on just one campus in the SEC if you wanted to go ahead explore the possibility. The point is that the contract won’t expire for a while, but is possible to do and do it well if you use the interim between now and the eventual expiration of the contract to lay the groundwork. Worst case scenario is Disney makes a more fair evaluation of the value. Also, historically, the genesis of widespread football on TV came from a lawsuit brought by UGA and Oklahoma. We know how to do this stuff when we want to do it.
…and the smug media always scoff at Kirby & co for playing his « disrespect » card…
lose by 3 in sec champ for the first time in 3yrs after back to back natties… nope you are out
hardly any mention about this yrs back to back sec champ; media referenced osu has chance to go back to back natties since last team to do in bama’s 2010-11… uh hello uga and stetson would like a word cbs
look at the 2yr schedule sankey gave us in our own conference- texas, bama, laner
…but thankfully kirby doesn’t have time for this shit and just keeps his boys choppin wood
osu loses in conf game and uga still behind them in the top 4
i feel like when those big10 teams play anyone with a pulse on a neutral field they are going to get skullfucked
a reckoning is coming to the cfp from the corner of Lumpkin & Pinecrest
Like I said yesterday…someone is going to go after the money and sue. Vandy and Pavia have the right approach…restraint of trade. Since CFB is so disorganized and not unified the playoffs are a collusion among the conferences the courts have already ruled against on other issues. Notre Dame is so mad they could do it. I’ll be stunned if it doesn’t happen this year or next. The infighting over the money can only lead to this.
It is the ESPN invitational and ND is not under the ESPN umbrella.
Miami and ND didn’t play anyone but change position in rankings. Bama and Ohio St effectively don’t face an impact for championship game loss and UGA’s isn’t rewarded for the win (other than Bammer excuses).
Shrink the playoff not expand it..
And the point about Vandy having the same record as Miami..losing to Bama and Texas is a good one.
The Committee is a bunch of sold out morons.
They had to get an ACC team in to keep them in the CFP fold. What would have been interesting is if Miami had played Duke in the WSOCP and lost.
Would the committee have put 10-2 UVA in to appease the ACC, or would the last bid go to ACC “just-the-tip” member Notre Dame and hope the conference didn’t totally revolt?
I think ND did screw up it’s brand by pulling out of the bowl process. They have a built in fan base of true believers but even they know deep down this was a PR nightmare for the school.
Then my plan to best put the teams into the playoffs won’t work? ? You mean everyone doesn’t have a plan?
