Thursday Thought Provoker: The More Things Change…

Here’s a blast from the past:

Let’s not focus on NIL, portals, or the CFP here. Let’s focus on the game day experience only…

What changes in the experience do you see as positives…which changes are negatives? In other words, what happened that were enhancements and which have been detriments?

  1. I haven’t been to a game since the construction on the north side of the stadium was done. I hope that has helped alleviate some of the rugby scrum that used to be there.

  2. Too much canned music exists today. Bring back more Redcoats’ music !

I don’t mind the pregame and stuff they do to start quarters to get the crowd going, but it is done way too much during the game for me.

And while you’re at it, get your toe off my lawn.

      • x100 to your +100.

It seriously detracts from the experience to me, so much so that it factors into the decision on whether or not to go to a game.

    • Agreed. I was never in the band but on hot July days when I see them out practicing, I respect it. Really would have loved to see them moved to the new West Endzone. A sunset behind “Meaner than a Junkyard Dawg” blaring out. Hell to the yeah! #GoDawgs

  3. Teenage Wasteland is dumb for us. Surely that can be updated. Does anyone really regard it as a “tradition”?

    • I’m probably the biggest Who fan there is, but that song has nothing to do with Georgia football. It doesn’t fit.

    • I feel like it has become tradition since it has been used for such a long time and it is better than using something newer like Enter Sandman or Welcome to the Jungle that some schools use.

I like it and feel like UGA has kind of claimed it.

  4. Mike Adams is the devil and forever changed tailgating and the gameday experience.

    • Bingo. Tailgating in the 90s felt like a “pick you favorite spot and return”. Now it’s hanging out in a parking lot or somewhere near Watkinsville unless you pony up some serious cash. Past few times we just went to Little Italy and hung out. Sad

      • 2019 was the last for me. We hit up the t shirt shops. After that off to the student center for lunch and watch the games.

I miss parking and tailgating on campus. However with the masses today, I understand they can’t have the wild west we had then.

Ticket prices are insane now but then again I don’t pay today’s concert prices either. Again I understand that is price of a winning program but, I know I’ll only go back if I run across a friends and family discount.

    • Haven’t attended a game in forever. Is North Campus still closed to tailgating? Because fuck whomever made that decision way back when (cough ADAMS! cough).

      • Tailgating is allowed on North Campus and I believe they still have a reserved no-alcohol area. Lots of kiddos in that area.

    • ^^^ Adams did his best to ruin tailgating. No real attempt to improve it since his exit. Unless you value more parking decks. Which I do not.

      • Used to take an RV to the games and park in the Tennis area parking lot until they moved us to East Campus. Then they built the dorms and moved us to the old intramural fields. They had buses take us to the game but after the game it was a mob scene to catch the right bus. I also had a parking pass to the old Hull Street lot so I drove from the fields to the lot. Adams was the devil.

  5. I have been a season ticket holder since graduating in ‘85. Use to go to all home games and 2-3 road games with a traveling group of a dozen. Now I am the only one left with tickets and don’t go to as many home games. Three hour drive from SC. That being said, the stadium improvements have been quality upgrades. I don’t care if Wi-Fi is lousy, I am there to watch a ball game. Athens/ Clarke County need to be better at traffic control and access roads accessibility after ball games.

      • My family and my Uncle’s family was up to 10 until the mid 90s when kids were going to college and others were playing sports on Saturday. Good times all of us going to the game.

  6. I like the entrance at the beginning of the game with the hype video and sound. But I hate the piped in music during the games. Just let the band play. I’ll always bitch about the amount of TV timeouts but that’s mostly when they’re playing piped in music.

Our stadium is better but still needs work. Only one scoreboard still shocks me and it’s behind the recruits who are supposed to be there to get gameday experience. They leave with a stiff neck having to turn around a look at replays.

Tailgating on campus is great except that you have to park far away and move your stuff to wherever you’re going. Typically, we’ll drop it off near the tailgate site and then go park and walk back. After the game is a different story though. I also prefer that College Gameday stay away since tailgating is already at a premium.

Bulldog park is fun but it’s a bus ride and you miss out on the campus experience.

Worst I’ve been to is Auburn though. Completely commercialized with no charm. Literally they pay a company to set up tents, tables, chairs, coolers with ice. All white not school colors. They actually have a map so you can find your spot (row J #23). It sucks.

    • Good point about the scoreboard. Would be interesting to see if another could fit on the southeastern corner at Gate 7, but it’s pretty tight. I like the video board setups at Bryan Denny but Sanford doesn’t have the space in the “corners” to do that.

      • Agreed. I wonder if they could do a halo board around the top of the 300 level opposite the bridge. Thinking like they have at MBS in ATL. Or maybe that would look stupid as hell.

  7. They greatly improved the South side lower level (Alumni side) hallway which used to be fully congested, impossible to get to food or bathrooms. Now they have beer and beverage carts in the hallway with minimal lines (good). However, if you want food you have a long walk to endzones and long lines there (bad). It would be nice if they did some grab and go food kiosks in that hallway.

  8. Nothing is considerably better about the game day experience than it was in the 90’s in my opinion. Except the win-loss record.

  9. I went to school in the late 70’s. Watched all but one game from the tracks. We would arrive Friday evening and stay until the game was over on Saturday. Erk would come by Friday night, smoke a cigar and occasionally have a drink. We got to watch the Pee Wee’s play early Saturday mornings. The team buses unloaded in front of the tracks those days. Cheerleaders would stay for a while and do a few cheers. Of course, back then every game was a noon game. So, closing in that end of the stadium pretty much ruined the game watching experience for me.
