Thursday Thought Provoker: Don’t Play It Again, Sam

Okay, this should be a fun one:

For me, if I never heard She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young Cannibals ever again, I’d be okay. Mainly for the PTSD of hearing it as my dad listened to Clark Howard ad neaseum during my earlier years.

A few others I really can’t stand to listen to:

Baha Men – Who Let The Dogs Out?

This gets a lot of play at sporting events and literally anywhere I’ve been, as people deemed this as a “fun” song. I tend to disagree and even looking this up on YouTube induced vomiting.

Taylor Swift – Shake It Off

Between school administration and having four girls, I’ve heard this enough times already to the point where I began to equate it to the sound of a passing airplane. It has no energy or feeling to it, and somehow is regarded as a classic amongst that generation of girls. Honestly, I don’t understand the Swifty movement or why they think she’s so wonderful, with most of her music as interesting as nonfat greek yogurt. Yecch.

Mr. Jones, Counting Crows

Just overplayed to the point I really couldn’t stand the song, the artist, or my ability to hear.

How about you. There’s more that I can’t stand, but I’ve probably done so much to remove them from my memory I can’t recall them.

Discuss.

  1. Macarena. 1996 vs Southern Mississippi. If you were there you agree.

    • Still have nightmares of them playing “Party in the USA” right before the start of the second half of the 2009 Kentucky game, we came out flat as a table and blew it, absolutely brutal…..

  2. ‘Tom Sawyer’ by Rush. ‘More than a Feeling’ by Boston. Clear Channel Communication killed those and are still beating the dead carcasses.

    • Immediately change the radio when Rush comes on due to that summer where it was all my brother would listen to…..

  3. who let the dogs out playing non stop as you passed every tailgate on the way to sanford painfully reminds me of pre s carolina game hype at all time high and then post game realities after losing to those fucksticks

  4. The entire Bon Jovi collection should be nuked. And save some enriched uranium for Def Leppard too.

Someone needs to shoot this singer in the face:

Any song with instructions and/or any song that people feel compelled to line dance to is ick.

I really wish we could all agree that Lee Greenwood’s one hit is embarrassingly vapid and find a substitute. It reminds me of this:

    Btw: I like Mr. Jones.

    • Lol on Blink 182. It’s an unpopular take, but as much as I like Toby Keith, I don’t care for Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue as it struck me as patriotic yet grossly misguided in where the real rage of what happened should’ve been focused upon (looking at you CIA, as I’m sure they’re looking at me).

      • Can you name anything of substance that is in the lyrics. Its just so damn vacant.

Its two stanzas that don’t make a lot of sense followed by 3 choruses and some geographical references.

It just seems to me like it written with the intention of appealing to the very lowest common denominator: the people who repeat “born in the usa!” over and over.

Song reminds me of what Patton (in the movie) said about coming modern warfare:

“Wonder weapons?” My God, I don’t see the wonder in them. Killing without heroics. Nothing is glorified? Nothing is reaffirmed? No heroes, no cowards, …”

I get more out of Country Boy Can Survive.

        We deserve better.

Ragged Old Flag is a helluva lot better song and one I am happy to sing and get teary eyed to.

        • When my drill instructors handed me my eagle, globe, and anchor Thst song was playing. You try too hard sometimes, Derek. Not everything has to be “deep” to be meaningful. But it’s your list and you can include what you want. I do agree with you on Def Leopard and Bon Jovi. Mr Jones is gay as is the band Counting Crows.

          • Yes if its supposed to be a celebration of my country I’d like it to be a tad deeper than “YMCA.” Sorry.

The lead singer of the Counting Crows dated Jennifer Anniston and Courtney Cox so maybe not quite as gay as….

          • Well if it’s good enough for Marine Corps I would say you will probably just have to come to grips with it being good enough for you and “your” country. lol. I don’t care who he dated. His music is gay and he always looked like he needed a shower.

  5. As much as I loved Skynyrd growing up, if I could delete two songs forever the winners are Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama! Great songs but jeez so overplayed.

  6. All Star by Smashmouth, anything by Creed, Goo Goo Dolls, or The Offspring.

  7. Blinded by the Light. Besides the annoying beat of the organ, firmly believing the wrong lyrics for years made it disgusting. IYKYK

  8. Not sure why, but I cannot stand to hear Mustang Sally or Born to be Wild. Those two songs grate on my nerves.

  9. I’m a huge Stones fan, but if I never heard Start Me Up again, I’d be okay with it. And I agree with nearly everything that’s already been put forth in the comments.

  10. This will probably get me banned from the blog, but here goes. Stairway to heaven by Led Zeppelin and Freebird by Skynyrd. I’m 65 and have heard these a million times. Sorry if I offend anyone. Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus and Mmm bop by Hansen are migraine inducing.

  11. Anything by or about Taylor Swift
    “ “” “ Tim Magraw
Outside the fire by Barf Brooks
There are lots more, but that’s a start!

  12. “Imagine,” because all the burn-outs would sit around the dorm smoking weed and listen to it thinking they were deep.

Also, any noises emanating from Yoko Ono.

  13. All I want for Christmas is You by Mariah Carey. Really though, any and every song by Mariah Carey and/or Whitney Houston.

    • Okay, Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime” is horrible and Paul should be embarrassed for putting out such shit.

  14. Love will keep us together Capt & Tenille played it every 15 min on am and fm

    • Exactly. Always hated it.
One of the first songs I thought of when I saw the post subject.

  15. The entire Bon Jovi collection should be nuked. And save some enriched uranium for Def Leppard too.

  16. I like the White Stripes, they have some great tunes, but Seven Nation Army. The riff was great the first million times I heard it, but it seems to be standard for every high school/college band to play it during football games. I could do without hearing it ever again.

Sandstorm, Rocky Top, anything the gators play is also on the list.

    • Petty survives the gator’s unfortunate usage…

      We can’t be that petty.

      (See what I did there?)

      • Oh shit, you’re right! I missed that one, blinded by my hatred of the handbags. And I did see what you did there.

      • If Jort Nation really wanted to honor the man, they’d sing “Even the Losers” to begin the 4th quarter because those bums have backed down way too many times.

  17. A few modest words on behalf of ‘All Star’. Remember Shrek? We took a group of first and second graders to see it. The theatre was crowded with youngsters, and they all started singing along when that played. Still brings a smile.

  18. “Blinded by the Light” by Manfred Mann and his Earthy Band. I’ve been over that song for 40 years.

  19. Wow….a Clark Howard reference on GTP-R! I curse you for putting that jingle in my head.

  20. As a “yute” I listened mostly to 96 rock and it got to the point it seemed, that all they played was Zeppelin and Skynyrd. So for a time I couldn’t stand either band’s catalogue. Have to throw in Bon Jovi & hair metal as well. I loved it when Nirvana came in and sort of wiped the slate clean. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve gone back to my roots and listen to some of the old stuff. 70’s really was a fantastic music decade.

  21. Zombie, by the Cranberries. I dont know why they would play it. ever. it kills my head when I hear it. I dont even like thinking about it.

  22. Any song sung by Billy Joel. They all suck and all get stuck in my head.

  23. Rocky Top and Saint Dolly saingin’ it don’t change a dayumn thing. That butt chuggin’ ballad can burn in Hell with all the sister kissin’ fat arse goofs yodeling along with it!

  24. Oh I could keep yall here all day. But I guess the topic is songs Thst I find particularly repulsive, not just songs I don’t like.

Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. Possibly the most overrated and overplayed song by a stupidly overrated and overplayed band that fooled a bunch of people my age into believing they didn’t want to be rich or famous as a way of making themselves rich and famous. Everything about the song sucks from the ripoff of a Boston riff to the dumbass lyrics. Enough already.

Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd. I love the pre-crash Skynyrd. I have heard this song way, way, waaaaaaaaaay too many times from hearing it on the radio to hearing bad versions of it from bar bands in my younger days and watching people react to it like it’s about their third time hearing it is annoying.

Anything by Bon Jovi. Women my age all seem to think liking Bon Jovi is cute. It’s not.

Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. I hate everything about this song.

Im sure there are more but those are probably the ones I can most happily never hear again.

  25. Remember the UGA UF game after “Who Let the Dogs Out” was released we lost so we had to hear Who Beat The Dawg’s Ass the rest of the day and night.

  26. Any top-40-bee-bop-a-wappa bullshit from the 50’s. While it was before my time originally, they reincarnated the crap during the American Graffiti / Happy Days fad in the 70’s.
Anything considered disco or has a semblance of that beat. That shit followed the a.m. bee-bop shit in the 70’s. Miserable period.
Despite this there was some great music in the 70’s, most of which wasn’t found on FM.

  27. As I commented yesterday … the entire Norah Jones catalog.

Also, I will throw in anything by Widespread Panic. The single worst musical experience of my life was seeing them at the Sigma Nu house in winter 1987. Never been into jam bands (though I don’t mind a band jamming on a song or two during a set) but I don’t see the appeal of the genre.

I also never need to hear Baby Shark, anything by the Wiggles, or any toddler music ever again.

    • Norah Jones is something I never got the appeal of either. People love jam bands because they’re high. True story.

      • RR and I had a wonderfully profane conversation as to why Norah Jones’ rendition of “Wurlitzer Prize” is better than Waylon’s.

  28. Can’t believe it! This many comments and no mention of Nickelback?🤢

  29. The entire KISS catalogue, with the exceptions of Detroit Rock City and Cold Gin.

  30. “Honey “ by Bobby Goldsboro makes me think darksome thoughts.

  31. having a bunch of girls meant a lot of bieber fever time. fuck that canuck to hell and back.

  32. TNT by AC/DC. That “keep it twisty” commercial drives me nuts. Really anything by them. Brian Johnson’s voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

  33. Abracadabra.

A video popped up on my Twitter feed late yesterday with Jim Gaffigan saying how much he loved the Steve Miller Band but hated that song. He said that the chorus should have been:

    Abra, Abra, Cadabra…
followed by a shotgun blast (end of song)
