Finebaum asks a good question.
So what’s your favorite? Personally, I was a fan of Springhouse Barbecue until the owner was murdered back in the 90s, and have been in a depression ever since.
Love to hear your thoughts, and, admittedly, we’re still testing the comments and likes sections for functionality, so keep trying and let us know what you’re still experiencing. I edited the settings yesterday and it lead to some posting as anonymous, so I switched it back.

Walker Brothers in Sycamore,Ga. was my go to for BBQ for years. Owned and operated by David and Mike Hickman, they did a hell of a business. My mother, a fine cook, used to get me to pick up some of their BBQ and Brunswick Stew. She really loved their stew. Spread it out hot on plain white bread and eat it with a fork.On the bottom of their business card was:
We cater:
Anything
Anywhere
Anytime
Mike passed away several years back and David continued on, but it probably wasn’t the same because Mike did all the cooking. Last I heard was David was selling out and moving to Florida. Those guys really loved to fish.
I still have 2.5 lbs of their BBQ in my freezer. Come on over and visit and I’ll thaw it out so we can have some sammiches.
Oh this is a subject near and dear to my heart. Southern Soul BBQ on St Simon’s is excellent. They’ve gotten where they gip you on the sides though. Fat Boy’s in Sylvester is mighty good. Three Little Pigs in Pine Mountain is outstanding. Agree with whit on Walker Brothers. It was good. Riverfront BBQ in Albany will do in a pinch. Country’s in Columbus is good, but the Mercury Drive location is far superior to the other two. The food is better and on Friday and Saturday nights the bluegrass band plays. I hear Smokey’s in Cordele is good but I can’t catch them open. Hawkeye’s in Tifton used to be pretty fair but Inhavent eaten there in years. The Smokin Pig in Valdosta is good.
I had Fat Boys ribs on Sunday with my parents and we brought the leftovers back with us. It’s good.
We had Three Little Pigs for lunch a year or so ago when we were at Callaway for a weekend. Really good.
I love Southern Soul. Even if we’re at Jekyll, we go across the bridge to SSI just for it. The Q is outstanding and I really like the Brunswick stew and the hoppin’ John.
My mom had bought the ribs on Saturday before we got there. They are closed on Sundays.
Vandys in downtown Statesboro (Blitch St if I recall) was my personal favorite forever. However, the new KING is Goldees in Kennedale, TX (technically Ft Worth). Only open Thurs, Fri & Sat. Expect a two hour wait to get in.
I also like Beachcombers (near entrance to King and Prince) in St. Simon. It looks like a stand, but the q is good.
Just wait until you get to Austin, folks. It’s not even the same sport here. Franklin’s, La BBQ, Terry Black’s, Ccoper’s, Mickelthwait, Stiles Switch. All are better than any BBQ joint in the country. Maybe I’d throw a KC joint in the mix, but that’s it.
I’ve been to Terry Black’s in Dallas – it was damn good.
There’s a place called Lewis BBQ over in Greenville, SC that serves pretty good TX BBQ. I believe the owner worked for Franklin for years before heading east and opening up shop. I do want to make the pilgrimage to Austin someday for Franklin.
Don’t kid yourself Dawg! Hell, I have eaten at them all, from Texas to SC and everywhere in between. Asking a true BBQ connoisseur what is best is like asking someone “how far is yonder”! Finabaum wouldn’t know great Q if it bit him in his ass.
Is there one woman that is considered beautiful…is there only one wine considered great…
Amazing BBQ is found all over the country, not just in one joint!
Amen sir! I have enjoyed Q all over the south and even some in Oklahoma. TX, MO, AL, GA, SC and NC – all have exceptional Q. Some better than others though. BBQ is a primary food group for me.
Finebaum is from Memphis, so is expect he has his own thoughts on BBQ. He keeps them to himself and just stirs the pot cause that’s what he’s best at.
I can’t imagine any bbq good enough to stand in a line for 3+ hours.
Not all of them have 3 hour lines, but I agree.
Thing is they don’t do pig in Texaa.
Yessir Mike, Southern Soul has some fine groceries for sure. When Davis Love III got involved in it, they really took off.
Testing maybe I’ll be removed from the banned list. Still trying daily to get in.
We can hear you loud and clear.
When I graduated we moved the Memphis where I went to grad school, it was ‘93-2000. Really had a lot of great BBQ, never been to Dallas or Austin but I would measure Memphis pulled pork against anyone.
I like the ribs I smoke myself better than most. We lived on St. Simons and SS was certainly a go to. In the ATL like Fox Brothers and Heirloom. For old school Q you can’t beat the original Fresh Air location. There used to be a place outside Soperton, I’m drawing a blank on the name, where they smoked whole pigs on an old metal mattress frame. You pulled the pork off yourself. It was awesome.
Fox and Heirloom are outstanding. Community Q in Decatur on Clairmont and the Old Brick Pit on Peachtree in Chamblee are rock solid on the northeast side of town.
I haven’t eaten at the Old Brick Pit in 10 or 12 years. Glad it’s still in business. I miss Harold’s down by the Pen. Best Brunswick stew.
We refer to Old Pit as Hot Asian barbecue. If you go there you will understand! 😁
I’ve liked Fox and Heirloom. 441 South in Canton is great too.
I stopped at Green Top BBQ in Dora, AL on the way to see Auburn at Ole Miss with the Auburn side of the family and liked them.
I will also add Que in Alpharetta and they have good sides.
It was Sweat’s outside of Soperton. Had a senior moment there. My apologies.
Sweat’s
I like what I make myself best also. I went to the place in Soperton (stopped by on the way to Jax), but the reality didn’t live up to the billing for me. Making my own is a big operation, though so mainly I just go by Butt Hut in Athens. I ain’t driving to Dallas for Q.
Fincher’s Barbecue in Macon would be my last barbecue meal for a number of reasons.
White Diamond between Warner Robins and Kathleen. Old, white cinder block building; it’s been in business for well over 60 years. They always provided pulled pork for local high school functions. Menu is limited, and it’s strictly pick-up. It’s a vinegar-based sauce, but it’s one of my favorite flavors since early childhood. No frills, but reasonable prices, and dependable quality.
In Bonaire. They have some indoor seating now. Yes, very good.
I used to love Zeb’s in Danielsville. Butcher Paper in Opelika is pretty legit.
I grew up eating DK’s BBQ in Waycross, GA. Now my favorite is Southern Soul on SSI. I tried a rack of ribs at the Dinosaur in Syracuse one time. Those were pretty good as well, for Yankees, anyway.
Two places I like: Old Clintons in Gray when I’m headed to Athens from Southwest Georgia. Also, a little dump in Macon County called Oglethorpe BBQ is very good.
Testing
How ’bout we compare the greatest BBQ joint slogans…
Jim’s Smoking Q over the mountain near Blairsville said “You Can Smell our Butts for Miles”…now that’s a good one!
Stinson’s BBQ Lumber City GA. Mostly mustard based but darn good. Never tried their ribs but intend too.
Where’s all the love for Hot Thomas? Gone but not forgotten. Some of the best looking women I ever laid eyes on slinging Q in there a few years ago. That, and Holcomb’s (the original chicken house location, BBQ not the women). You can tell I drove Hwy 15 to and from Athens. Also, y’all act like you never ate any Walter & Ralph’s. Sigh, all the good ones are gone…
Yes, RD. Holcomb’s in Plains GA and also have one in Greensboro. Haven’t been in the one in Plains in a long time but remember sawdust for flooring. They are a little Pricy.
Is Hot Thomas’ still there? I haven’t been through there in years. Was it Holcomb’s there in Greensboro? That one was good, too. I
I did a butt and stew Saturday. The butt I did on the Traeger but the stew I did old school in an iron kettle over a fire. Wasn’t bad!
Not the best Q, but sentimental. We always stopped at Holcomb’s on the way to Athens from Sandersville to grab lunch for the tailgate. Those were some good times as a kid.
White Plains with the sawdust flooring. Didn’t get much better than that.
Springhouse BBQ owner had ties to Fred Tokars so there were some interesting things flowing through their sales😉
The “best looking women” @Hot Thomas’-At least one of them was his DIL. It is closed.
Please drive through Jackson and stop at Fresh Air BBQ. Many of you would change your minds about which barbecue is the best. Best around here for generations. Even yankees detour off of I-75 to eat there. Despite that it’s worth the trip.
For ribs, cozy corner in Memphis is where it’s at!
