Thursday Bye Week Question: What’s Fixable, What’s Working, and What’s “It is What it Is?”

Saw this post that spurned this thought.

To get the thread started, here’s my .02:

Fixable – Offensive line/run game – Between injuries thinning out both groups, getting one of the Robinsons back as well as Tate makes this a stronger group. I think the run game – especially in the final stretch, is fixable and will make the offense better.

Working – Special team – All facets, we have what I believe is the best kicking tandem in Woodring and Thorson, and we have a legit scary return specialist. Evans is going to be a game changer at some point.

It is What It Is – Receivers. I think this unit is doing what it’s going to do the rest of the way. There’s some razor thin margin for error sometimes but I think we’ve seen what this group can do. The only question is how we continue to work with the unit and improve Beck’s confidence as well as accuracy…Beck seems to be having a hard time seeing the field, but last year the field was easy to see whenever Bowers and McConkey were out there at the same time. There’s no one who warrants double teaming, which makes the windows smaller and the decision making more crucial.

Your thoughts?

  1. More than “run the damn ball”, catch the darn football, not sure if spacing in route running is an issue vs separation….HEALTH, HEALTH, HEALTH, when UGA football is 90-95 % healthy, be afraid, be very afraid…GO DAWGS!!

  2. I was relieved to see the major improvement in tackling last week. That has been a hallmark the last few years. Very few times did a player break a tackle and get more yards. The D flew to the ball all night. They changed formations after Ewers came to the line a few times and it worked sublimely.

    • Great point. There were a lot of missed tackles in the MissSt game and it was a concern..that problem seem to have been solved against the Holsteins…Defense put the smack-down on them to where the Refs had to protect them with horse-manure calls.

  3. I would like to see Evans get more action as a slot guy even if that means taking Dom outside. More Delp (his game has improved) and Luckie when it makes sense.

  4. I’ve said it before: We don’t have those unicorn type receivers that can consistently bail you out in traffic. Beck needs to understand that. YMMV.

  5. IMO losing Colbie Young was not a big loss. I was not impressed with his effort to go after the ball. There were several occasions where he did not make much of an effort to go after the ball against the DB besides the obvious example against Bama that ended the comeback. Sure that ball could have been thrown better, but damn at least fight for that ball and prevent the INT. He didn’t seem to use his height to his advantage if you ask me and was not very physical.

Lovett baffles me. He put up good numbers at Mizzou and just hasn’t seemed to be able to make things click at Georgia. Dillon Bell seemed like he was ready for a break out year after last season, but he is having issues catching the ball and Arian Smith is what he is at this point. Inconsistent. He will make some big plays, but he will also run the wrong route or drop a ball that he should catch.

I think the drops and miscommunications with Smith have had an impact on Beck and his confidence with the passing game. If they can get in sync I feel Beck will get back to playing like last year.

  6. Glad to see tackling back. Hope it sticks around. The receivers need to spend two weeks with the jugs machine while the coaches throw wrenches at them.

I’m the biggest Bobo supporter, but he needs to RTDB, especially when we are trying to close out the game and it’s already working. At least put a back beside Beck for the possibility of a run.

    • Can we modify WordPress to allow me to like a post twice? This post deserves a double.

    • (Uglydawg)…
I’ve been reluctant to criticize Bobo..but when Georgia came out in the second half throwing the ball like it was a tight game, it baffled me (admittedly not hard to do). It’s one thing if the running game isn’t working..but the running game was looking pretty good. When your way up in points..RTDB which RTDClock. Maybe Bobo out-thought the situation..maybe he thought Sark was looking for the RTDB strategy and he would surprise him. If that was his thinking it was over-thinking..Of COURSE Sark was looking for the run..but it is still the most effective way to demoralize an opponent that’s several scores behind.
This was a game against the #1 team on their trashy field with their goofy fans and effeminate celebrities. The Dawgs had a very mediocre offensive effort that was even further stressed by one-sided officiating. There were several penalties that kept Txux drives alive, dropped balls on offense and defense..and our Dawggies still nutted that calf.
Texux is fortunate that the score wasn’t 40 something to zilch.
      They’re just not that good.
But I’ll take it and pull for Vandy to further humiliate their arrogant souls.

      • I’ve been wondering about this, because I was yelling at the TV to run the damn ball a lot of the night. I think it’s possible that they’re trying their best to be mindful of ETN’s workload due to all the injuries to that room. If we lose him, that might be a fairly fatal blow. That at least would be an understandable explanation for why they didn’t just ride him early in that game when he was getting chunk runs.

    • Run it with who? Eitienne is not built for 30 carries. Frazier has not shown an ability to go between the tackles. Neither has Cash. The “hated” bubble screens are basically running plays and do get those 3-4 yards when everyone thinks they should be 10 yard gains. Give CMB both Robinsons healthy and I’d bet his game plan looks a lot different. He used 86 in the backfield some last year and TEs at the fullback position. Must be a reason he’s not gone back to that.

  7. If the line can continue to run block like it did Saturday I think most of the problems will work themselves out. That was the worst “catching” game I’ve seen from this group & hopefully the last game like that. Carson was as inaccurate as I’ve seen & I’ve got to believe that was a one off also. If so, we’re in good shape going forward. If not, well the season will likely have a disappointing ending.

  8. First off, I disagree with Coach T’s premise on RaRa being the #1 receiver. Just because you play X doesn’t meant your the best option or talent. We all knew we had a bunch of #2s (and I mean that in a non-sophomoric way) going into the season, but that wouldn’t hurt us unless we went against an elite secondary, of which there are none in college football. Ohio State has a really good one, probably as good as Georgia’s. But RaRa as a #1? That’s silly. Otherwise, I agree with you JP and I’m lumping Beck in with the receivers. He is what he is – smart and level-headed, at times a great passer but at others prone to errant throws. Also fixable? The DL, already in progress, and secondary.

  9. Bell seems to be the go-to guy in so many situations.
I’ve been told that Cash Jones has good hands.
Beck does put a lot of zip on the ball..but he did last year too.

  10. BECK SPREADS THE BALL AROUND SO MUCH. I THINK LOVETT, BELL, THE VANDY KID WILL BE FINE THEY WILL IMPROVE AFTER ALL THIS FUSS ABOUT DROPS. WATCH FOR A DRAMATIC IMPROVEMENT ON OFFENSE DOWN THE STRETCH. RUN THE BALL BUT DON’T WEAR OUT THE GATOR IT WOULD BE FATAL LOSING HIM.
