In case you missed it, the #1 quarterback just signed a $10 or up to $12 million NIL deal with Michigan. And they’re not being shy when it comes to gloating about it.
And, predictably, it’s becoming a conference thing.

At some point, the desire to be relevant when the collective talent isn’t there becomes absurd. The fan bases with the wealthiest contributors will be demanding to pay the highest price to get the highest number of stars. What I’m confused by is how purchasing one player with top dollar suddenly makes a team the best? What about the surrounding talent…I think we can look to Nebraska to see that simply securing a top QB recruit doesn’t immediately translate into a national championship, does it?
And what does this mean if a QB comes in and stinks the place up? Outside or Oregon, the B1G isn’t necessarily busting at the seams with elite QB play, even though they’ve come out of pocket quite a bit to secure transfers in the conference.
Quick editorial note: the original posting of this read as “white QB play” which was an autocorrected error for “elite QB play”. Apologies for anyone who read and wondered what the hell was going on here today. I usually do these in the evening on my phone while getting the kiddos to bed, and iPhone is not my editorial friend.
If this is the trend, it doesn’t matter how many QR codes you put up around Sanford, we’re going to have to sell everything including our souls to corporate sponsorships to keep up.
Anyone who decides to give that kind of money to an unproven high school player (and, yes, all HS players are unproven even the #1 overall recruit) is just stupid.
Reminds me of an untold number of minor league millionaires that never panned out.
“the B1G isn’t necessarily busting at the seams with white QB play, even though they’ve come out of packet quite a bit to secure transfers in the conference.”
Did autocorrect do a number on this sentence, or did this blog take a weird turn?
Shit. I need an editor. Also probably need to quit doing this between getting kids to bed with tired eyes.
Thanks for the catch. Apologies for any false alarms.
I hate meeshagan…and notre dame…
4-0 in my lifetime and that donut better still be there when I leave dammit.
Ditto, Derek…
GO ARMY!!
You give that kinda money to an 18 year old, I don’t ever think it pans out. If he’s frugal with his money he’ll he want have to play pro ball. The system is broke. If we don’t get guide line on nil we as fans are screwed.
I am really beginning to wonder what the hell we are even watching at this point. It sure as hell is not college football. May as well just call them the Barstool Wolverines.
NFL owners get a return on investment from tickets, tv and merchandise. Collective contributors don’t (beyond ego). This model is not sustainable but I guess it’s changing soon enough where the schools will have more say in this. NFL Lite has arrived.
No idea who that clown is but I felt my love of college football continue to fade watching that video.
Is that the picture next to the word “douche” in the dictionary?
Michigan…Mitch Mustain and Ryan Perrilloux are holding on lines 2 & 3 for you.
If the money numbers are accurate that is a terrible investment if you ask me. No way this doesn’t either cause locker issues, make him already think he has arrived/complacent, or puts too much pressure on the kid.
Portnoy far outshines McAfee in his douchiness. He’s got the $$$, but investing your faith and funds in the commitment and possible success of an 18-year-old is not a good plan. Poor kid’s but a Lambo and influencer girlfriend away from mediocrity (that’s how this works, right?).
Just think…One could have bought two banana/duct tape artworks for that price.
There’s always money in the banana stand.
I burned it.
What if you spend every nickel you can scrape together to buy a QB and there’s nothing left for an O-line? Just a thought….
Unfortunately, money isn’t an issue at Michigan. The guy funding all this is the second wealthiest man in the world (I believe). He founded Oracle.
Sure didn’t take long for the system to devolve into insanity. What 18 yr old kid is mentally equipped to deal with everything that comes along with that kind of money & fame & pressure. Many fans will have little patience with a kid making more in a season than they might in a lifetime. They’re professional ball players in every way except age and will be expected to play like it. What could possibly go wrong with this scenario?
