Stretch the Damn Field, Bobo

Brooks Austin is hoping that the Beck to Smith connection starts happening more Saturday, but further beyond the LOS.

Deep shots. It’s been talked about adnasuem, but just how strugglesome has the deep shot accuracy been this season? Let’s take a look.

Carson Beck by the Numbers:

  • Overall completion percentage: (68.3%)
  • Passes at or Behind LOS: 32/34 (94.11%)
  • Passes Thrown 0-10 Yards: 17/28 (60.7%)
  • Passes Thrown 11-20 Yards: 15/21 (71.4%)
  • Passes Thrown 20+ Yards: 2/11 (18.18%)

So, as we can see, it’s been an issue through three games. With 48% of Beck’s total completions coming at or behind the line of scrimmage and landing just 18% of his deep shots at this point in the season, defenses are going to begin to attack this Georgia offense. This is the week Carson Beck’s going to have to buck this recent trend if Georgia is going to move the football consistently against this Alabama defense.

  1. This will be the best secondary we have faced, and possibly will face. I doubt we will see improvement. But….my inner Munson is stroooong this week, so my thoughts are probably not worth much

  2. Damn! Beck’s numbers look a lot like DJ Ukelele’s. I knew he wasn’t hitting the deep shots, but I didn’t think they were that bad.

  3. Yeah, I don’t feel good about this game. We need to run the ball and we need the offense to make explosive plays now and then. I think the defense will, don’t feel good about the O. Hope I’m wrong.

  4. Here is an oddly specific prediction I read this morning: Milroe gives Alabama a late lead, but in the final seconds, a Woodring FG gives UGA a 2 point victory. I would take that right now.

  5. I’m not an offensive genius and I didn’t even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. But I think we lost to Alabama in the SECCG because we waited WAY to long to try and open up the offensive play calling. Even if you aren’t hitting the deeper routes you force their defense respect it and they can’t keep cheating up and snuffing out the middle routes. Notice Beck is better at 11 – 20 than 0-10. Throwing deep helps open up the 11-20 opportunities.

    • I agree, but I recall we marched right down the field in the first drive with some nice intermediate passing by Beck (who is really good at that). Seems we got real conservative after that. BTW, I also don’t know shit about coaching, and I haven’t stayed at the Holiday Inn in a while! But i do have a question for those more informed: Assuming Beck cannot get the long ball going, why can’t we win with 10-20 yard passes (Beck’s over 70% on those) along with the run game?

    • Yeah all that “holding on opening up the offense” hasnt worked in Bobos career yet. Im of the opinion we didnt hold back, we just werent that good on offense and it showed.

    • When they saw that Brock and Ladd couldn’t scare them because they were limited, they tightened down on the run game and challenged Beck to make tough throws. Its what they do.

When you aren’t winning match ups outside and your LT is getting rag dolled by Dallas Turner its tough. They did hit Arian on a long one.

Most of our other wrs are not speed demons. The one that is, wasn’t sure handed. Seems he may have improved. We’ll see.

I still say that if they don’t run that stupid ass blind reverse pitch, we might have squeezed out a w in the end.

But as I said all off season, where are the explosives going to come from? Its not simply a matter of calling them. Our guys have to beat coverage AND the qb has to hit them.

The fewer times per game that opportunity arises the fewer you are going to hit. To me the bigger story isn’t the rate of success, its the frequency. Those are always 50/50 balls at best. 11 times ain’t a lot. If we’d hit 3/4 more would we be in a much greater position?

I do think we need to scare them with Arian a time or two, but the gap between winning and losing is likely not going to be deep ball success. Its going to be winning the LOS and really physically taking it to them.

This is a defensive team with a great punter. Play to your strengths. Its a 60 minute game. We’re tougher, deeper and better conditioned. Let the truth be revealed over time.

If we hit a deep one it needs to be because they’ve had to add guys to the box stop the run. When they can’t win with a 6 man box, then you’ve got them and we can enjoy the magnificence of the deep ball td.

Deprive them of any enjoyment in the game of football. Make them want to be doing anything other than deal with getting hit in the mouth over and over and over.

Make their cocky, dancing around like a bunch of wee little girls hurt, bleed, sweat, suck wind and then fucking QUIT! Their star receiver wears gd nail polish!! Make that mf-er sit down when he pees!

      And then we go home.

I don’t know what effect it would have on kids these days but I know we don’t do all that choreographed bullshit when we score. I’d have every one of their 2024 td celebrations on a loop in front of that defense all week long. If it has the same impact on them as it does me, they’ll know what to do.

I’d also let them see a photo of Ryan Williams’ pretty fucking manicure…

      • I swear to god Derek, you almost sound positive today. I thought I noted a hint of the Ranger in your tone. Have you been into the WL Weller already?

        • I’ve felt good about this all week, which is probably a really bad sign. We’ll see.

I haven’t watched a lot of bama in 2024. I watch very little of anything that isn’t us and usually not very closely.

What I have seen is them doing a whole lot of celebrating and dancing. I get all sorts of bad ideas going through my head thinking about them disrespecting us like that.

I say we put an end to that shit.

          I also saw this:

          And thought:

I’m getting too old to get too riled up every week. Its a game played by kids I don’t know after all.

But this one has my full attention. I hope our guys are fully switched to “victory or death” mode. Especially after Milroe ran that sewer of his. We gotta remind people of who the fuck we are Saturday night and that we ain’t nothing to fuck with.

Miss Kaylyn, his band of dancing girls with a nickname so apt it had to be intentional need to get this message:

The page has turned. The dynasty is in Athens GD Georgia mf-ers.

“Crimson tide?” Does every purchase of a fan item come with a complimentary tampax?

          50 hours left…

  6. I dunno, I may be wrong but Bama doesn’t look as fast and physical on film as we are used to seeing, especially on defense. They have a great QB (although limited), a prodigy at receiver and a couple of good backs, so they can put up points for sure. I like our chances against them. I actually think we may kick their tooth in.

  7. Dear Lord…first time we go deep and miss there will be folks screaming at Bobo for being in 2nd and long. First run on 1st down and same group will be yelling at Bobo for not going deep. Just. Stop. It. By now you should know the first series is scripted from our scouting. After that, CMB will be probing for Bama’s weaknesses and our strengths. Playmakers will need to execute or the playbook gets limited. I don’t think Bobo will be the problem Saturday but I do worry about Kirby and Schumann on how they plan to deal with Milroe.

  8. If we win, I can guarantee it won’t be because of Bobo’s playcalling. It will be in spite of it.

    • We cant blame bobo until we lose 3-0. Then and only then can we make a suggestion he try something else. But probably not.

  9. Living here in Alabama this just means more. The bullshit I have heard all week is stifling. I really think we will be fine tuned and play well on the LOS. Hopefully Mykey will be back, even at 90%. If so they cannot block both Jalen and him and those guys will be ready for Muckroe………Quit my ASS!
