Strength of Personnel

A lot can be said about strength of schedule and strength of record…but what about the strength of the personnel?

In case you missed it, Indiana needed a miracle catch in the final minute to defeat the 3-6 Nittany Liars.

A close game in the B1G is one thing, but when it’s your projected B1G Championship participant against what amounts to the Auburn Tigers needing an escape at the end, that should tell you something about the amount of football talent that’s floating around the SEC.

It just means more.

  1. The committee will never take this into consideration because it would undermine their narrative that the B1G is the best conference in the land.

    • One small correction…

      UGA has beaten an OSU twice: the recent CFP semifinal and the Citrus Bowl in the early 90’s (I attended that game in Orlando against senior QB Herbstreit’s bucknuts)

      • Loved that game. Had a seat next to the Redcoats. Ohio State band directly across the field. The music was wonderful. So was the game. Garrison Hurst’s last game as a Dawg. Never forget it and, apparently, Herbstreit hasn’t forgotten it either.

  3. I would love to have each of the Big 4 conferences list the ratio of blue chip recruits for each school. I have a feeling that more SEC games involve a higher % than the Big? Conference.

  5. I think Ohio State is really good and I think that post Meyer they are more like a top of the SEC team than they were under Tressell. But I also think that all the clichés about “iron sharpening iron” are true too.
    My guess is that OSU makes Indiana look like a good but not great team and wins by 13 to 17 points. So there won’t be a 2006 Michigan v. OSU situation where the “smart” college football people are clamoring for a rematch.
    Whoever gets in out of the SEC in order to win it will have to beat OSU and I think that Texas AM, Bama, Ole Miss and Georgia could do it and would not have to play their absolute best game and OSU play their worst game. I don’t know that I will call for any of those teams to do it- I obviously want it to be us but those WRs scare the hell out of me. However 2021 Bama beat us in the SEC Championship and the 21 Georgia team was better than this OSU team and that 21 Bama team was not as good as this Georgia team CAN be if we continue to improve, beat Texas and beat Tech.
    This is a year when the people who advocated for a bigger playoff will feel justified because there will be better games against more evenly matched teams although the end result with 4 or 5 SEC teams in and a better that 50% chance of one of those teams winning it will quell some of the Big 10 hype and probably give the people paying close attention a reason to think that they are letting more foxes into the henhouse.

    • This. Yesterday I was listening to the weekly 3 hour college sports Sunday show on SiriusXM 84 (Dari Nowkhah and Roy Philpott). When they had Heather Dinich on Roy was asking about the potential that the B1G gets two or maybe three max teams in the CFP, the SEC gets five and possibly six, the Big XII gets in one or two max, two G6 champions get in, and the ACC gets none if an 8-4 Duke team beats a 10-2 Georgia Tech team in the ACCCG. Not impossible by any stretch (currently, the top odds for the ACCCG is Duke vs. Georgia Tech). Heather, Dari, and Roy all acknowledged that minds in the B1G offices would explode if the SEC got five or six and the B1G only got two or three.
