Just when you thought the landscape of portals and NIL couldn’t get any wackier than the current CFB approach, NCAA Basketball steps in and says “hold my beer”.
That’s right. Pro players are now coming back to the college ranks, and this isn’t the Quincy Carter type, either. I guess if the G League isn’t paying the bills, college NIL will up your pay grade and get you some more playing time for another shot at the pros.
I wonder if AD Mitchell still has a year of eligibility left?
After a nice conversation with vandy qb1, they exchanged management/legal team numbers and here we are today, follow the monies, to find a nice, green landing zone….#WTF!!
This was the inevitable consequence of any rule being deemed an “illegal restraint on trade”, welcome to (nearly) the bottom of the slippery slope! The only other shoe left to drop is the requirement that the athletes be enrolled, so all of you have banged for years on the NCAA for calling them “student-athletes”, you will probably be getting your wish very soon when they drop the “student” part altogether….
PS, Izzo’s comments (mentioned in the ESPN article yesterday on this topic) were correct!
“Wecome to the bottom (nearly) of the slippery slope”
Well said.
If there’s a hill left for college sports to die on, this one is it. If a G-League player gets the ability to come back to college, why can’t an NBA/NFL/MLB/NHL player who didn’t make it go back to college? Why can’t Michael Phelps or Katie Ledecky come back and swim as a way to earn NIL?
After all, what are years of eligibility other than a “restraint of trade”?
When the NCAA rolled over on Diego Pavia’s lawsuit to gain additional years of eligibility to replace his JUCO years, that set this whole thing into motion.
Sorry man, thinking Diego Pavia’s lawsuit was anywhere near setting this in motion, is delusional. Too bad we can’t post memes/gifs on the new site, because using the domino meme, the Diego Pavia lawsuit would be the penultimate big domino. I am not sure what the first little domino would have been, but it probably occurred before Diego Pavia enrolled in elementary school….
I didn’t say that. When the NCAA decided not to defend their eligibility rules in the Pavia case, that is what opened this door.
The courts did not say the NCAA couldn’t make rules. They said the rules could not infringe on the ability to earn NIL.
The dominoes started falling long ago. No doubt.
Bill Belichick checking his phone to see if he still has Tom Brady’s number.
Herschel has another year left.
welcome to AAA minor league football championship brought to you by Papa Johns and Viagra… you are looking live at Domino sugars field at Hard Rock stadium … the 10th yr redshirt senior Diego Pavia is leading his 4th team the Texas Tech Red Raiders of Chevron against the Ohio State Buckeyes of P&G/Head&Shoulders… what an atmosphere…
oof
The average salary for a G-League player for the 2025-26 season is $45,600 unless they have a two-way contract with the NBA which means it can jump up to north of $500k.
The NCAA essentially does not have a choice because for years they have allowed international players who have signed professional contracts to play in college.
