SEC Net Yards Per Play, Week 4

After 4 weeks of play, I thought I’d bring back a feature of the Senator’s from GTP, which looks at net yards per play alongside turnover margin. I’m not sure what data service he used for his stats, so I can only guess and try my level best to provide these insights. I’m opting to use data from BCF Toys, which figures per-play measures based on non-garbage time plays…also, it only examines FBS vs FBS games (so no data from a FCS game). Here’s what I got, so let’s give this a shot.

Notes:

  • Regarding YPP, how the numbers are what they are can be tricky to interpret. Data being what it is, one could point to Tennessee’s opponent’s OYPP and say “they’re competition is terrible!” as Oklahoma has the highest OYPP at 60 out of 134 teams, with Tennessee’s other opponents rounding out the bottom – Kent State is dead last in the category, NC State is 108, and Chattanooga (FCS) isn’t in the data set. Is this because Tennessee did that to them, or is Tennessee’s DYPP inflated because they’ve faced teams without an offensive pulse? We shall see, won’t we?
  • Seeing Auburn at #5 in YPP might be mystifying, but peep the turnover margin. The rotating quarterback experience is working well on the Plains, right? In other words, if Auburn didn’t give the ball away like it’s a charity, they’d likely be undefeated. Unless Freeze just completely destroys the confidence of his quarterbacks, Auburn is still competitive.
  • LSU and Oklahoma have benefitted from turnovers, especially for Oklahoma, but LSU might take a step back with Perkins now being out for the year. Their offense isn’t what it used to be, and their defense is looking exactly like they were last year, when they somehow finished at the top of this measure but couldn’t win the conference.
  • Actually, on the subject of Oklahoma, talk about the difference between 2017 to now. When we played them in the Rose Bowl, they were all offense, no defense. Now, polar opposite. Venables has a tough defense that is taking the ball away and should be winning games, but the offense is absolutely putrid.
  • Hard to say what to make of our Dawgs. Kentucky is 19th in DYPP, but Clemson remains at 61st. The Dawgs have the 73rd ranked OYPP, which isn’t great, and 11th ranked DYPP. Again, it’s early and Georgia has a small sample set of two games since Tennessee Tech is FCS.

  1. All of this is due to small sample sizes on the YPP statistic. Is the Georgia offense on a long-term basis the one that shredded Clemson in the 2nd half and had started to take over the game in the 2nd quarter or the offense that sputtered in Lexington? We’ll find out soon enough … like Saturday night.

    • Should this event at the bammers outhouse become a low scoring, field position type affair, fear not, CKS can and will (for the most part) go all “manball” then call on the UGA football “D” to protect the much sought after sec road “W”…GO DAWGS!!

    The figures will compress and the margins will tighten up as the season goes on, but it is disappointing to see where we are. I seem to remember that the Senator settled on having a net YPP above 2 if you want to be a playoff contender. Got some work to do Bobo!

  3. Pretty sure the Senator used CFBStats.com for his info on most things but not sure if it has YPP or needs to be calculated.

      • The senator got the stats from there, but if i remember correctly he still had to do the math on differential. There are also the guys from twitter he would link that did it as well. If I find them, Ill send it.

  4. upon initial review of this table, I was very concerned with our position and then I saw where Auburn was and continued to enjoy my morning croissant and cappuccino. merci et gratzi
    however my confidence meter feels like a roller coaster, Sun and Mon very confident in our chances but today woke up feeling like we have to play better than we have ever played to have a shot…my worry is our DL and getting dick punched in the 4Q by Millroe running the ball…somehow someway we need to cleanly, knock the shit out of him everytime he runs the ball, prob is he runs a 4.4 and is 220+…mykel & jalon where are thou brothers.

    • About 4 days from game day I always feel ‘like we have to play better than we have ever played to have a shot’. The inner Munson is strong with me. However, YPP doesn’t have much to do with my inner Munson – especially this early in the season when so many team are playing cupcakes. I guess it’s a fun way to make yourself nervous or to overestimate your team’s greatness.

    • Yeah, I’m the same way. I was confident before Kentucky. Now, everything I read just stokes my inner Munson. My advice is to drink heavily.

    • The Paris Baguette store I just walked out of with fresh baguette (and maybe an almond croissant or two…or three…ok, fine four!) is not the same nor as good as yours I’m sure.

      What’s the one game Kirby has had circled on his calendar all summer? Who’s the one coach he needs to put in his place to gain recruiting dominance? Kirby’s on this mother. Injuries are a REAL problem, but he’s going to have everybody’s hair on fire and Bobo is going to try to get Carson going early to quite the crowd a little. Milroe gonna Milroe…some good plays, so bad. We can handle that. Oh but for a missed FG last year, we’re the heavy favorite now. GATA.

    • Yeah, I had the same issue. Can see it now, but it appears corrupted. No place to comment, even in the app.

      • I really appreciate the patience of the contributors here. It’s almost more frustrating than Greg McGarity and IL Douche Adams talking tailgating.
