Pick Your Poison: Tailgating Flavor of the Week

Curious as to what your celebratory “first libation of the football season” will be, alcoholic or otherwise? Saw this on Twix for those of you who partake in the brown liquors:

For me, it’s the standard ice cold beer, probably Yuengling or Classic City Lager if I can find it. For the littles and my later cooling down sipper, it’s none other than this:

Be sure you find the ones that read “hecho en Mexico”…why?

While the Mexican version remained consistent, featuring the same sugar as it always had, the American recipe changed to using high-fructose corn syrup to sweeten it. While the company has always claimed that the flavor remains the same, a vocal group of passionate Mexican Coke fans claims they can not only taste the difference between Mexican Coke vs. American Coke, but that the former tastes better and “truer” (whatever that means ). Even though people still squabble over the subtle flavor variances, the most identifiable distinction between Coke from the two countries is in the vessel. Most American Coke comes in plastic bottles or aluminum cans, but Mexican Coke always comes in 12-ounce glass bottles  in the U.S.

If you haven’t tried one, pick one up (usually sell them as singles in the store) and take a flavor blast from the past this weekend.

note: the first drink blends with the second drink just fine. Go Dawgs!

  1. Some goddamn Rocky Mountain refreshment is what I’m having! Coors Light baby! We DO NOT skimp on beer in the KornDawg house.

  2. My first libation of the football season will be the same as ever. I always drink bourbon and Coke on game days. Usually just one.

  3. I will not drink any liquid that comes from Mexico. Just don’t trust their quality control.

    • I know what you mean but Tijuana Water is probably safer than whatever chemicals are in the Merican version – shrug emoji

      • Yup, was a cook at a McD’s in college. Wouldn’t eat there for years and years after. Finally figured out, it wasn’t just McD’s. Fast food prep is nasty.

  4. There’s an antique store (appropriately named, The Saturday Market 🏈) in Thomson GA that sells those.

Every time the wife and I are in that neck of the woods we stop and grab a couple. That’s the only Cokes we drink now.

**No need to bring a bottle opener, they have 1 mounted at the checkout with a catch-bucket on the floor!**

    • Costco used to have them. I don’t know if they do now, I quit drinking Coke a few years ago. But those Mexican Cokes ARE delicious!

      • I buy them by the case at Sam’s. I will not buy or drink any other Cokes. Natural sugar is way better for the body than corn syrup.

do other folks still call “bottle openers” church keys? Somethings I just can’t change.

        • a LONG time ago when I was still bartending and the manager of a restaurant I had just gone to work in asked if I needed any supplies I asked for a church key. He had no idea what I was talking about. It was the first of many conversations he and I had around the subject of bars and how to run them. This guy knew food and how to run that part of the business. Bars not so much.

  5. Will resort to some good old fashion adult beverage consumption after UGA homecoming…#AUBURN SUCKS!!

  6. During the game, sweet tea. Later that evening, some brown liquor to celebrate a resounding victory.

  7. My wife owns a restaurant, so she buys the Mexican stuff from her vendor. I have several employees from Mexico who swear their version is better. As a lifelong Coke drinker, I have to agree with them.

  8. Costco usually carries Mejican Coke by the case. Looking forward giving Hunker a try when I see it.

    Getting close y’all!!!! #GoDawgs

  9. Put me down for preferring Mexican Coke. It absolutely tastes better. Coke in a glass bottle is better. It just is.

  10. You wanna really get your mind blown? Try a Mexican Pepsi. It spanks Coca-Cola. A little sweeter with a few less bubbles. There, I said it out loud.

  11. An ice cold Tropicalia is the answer. Followed by several more at a reasonable pace. Its a marathon, not a sprint.

    • 2017 SEC Championship, I was hammering IPAs. Hammering. Puked. Passed out. Woke up. Opened another and cheered UGA on to victory.
That was THE last night that the only thing I drank were IPAs.
      Mrs. Day was not happy.

  12. Mexican Coke sweetens with cane sugar rather than corn syrup. It may have different chemicals too but they’re mighty tasty chemicals. In a cold glass bottle. If you’re drinking sodas, this is the brass ring.

    • I wonder if original soda fountain Coke still exists at a drug store counter somewhere. The true gold standard.

      • When I was a kid – maybe 1955-’57 – my dad took me to a pharmacy near the hospital in St. Augustine (not where it is today – this was in the old part of the city) and he bought a coke from the soda fountain. Cup of ice, syrup poured over ice, soda water added and stirred gently to mix. One of those ‘kid’ memories I’ll never forget.

  13. The Cowdog HD tailgate section rides at dawn so… Mimosas, Omelet’s, and Bloody Mary’s.

  14. I’ll start the morning early boiling a 1/2 bushel of green peanuts from Hardee farms. Put them on about 7:00am. By game time noon they’ll have cooked for 4 1/2 to 5 hours. Good and salty! Then at noon will open up my first Yuengling to wash down those salty peanuts. Later that afternoon after the Dawgs get that ass, I’ll pour me a good ole Pinnacle drink for the night cap. Living the dream. GO DAWGS!

      • I will be smoking a butt Saturday. Banana pudding for dessert. The old fashioned kind with custard made in a double boiler and meringue on top. I started making it this way when I had to stand in a chair to reach the stove. Which means I’ve been doing this for over sixty years. I’m the old people now.

        • Good luck with the butt but… I’m not a fan of bananas in any form or fashion. There’s a reason you can get thrown overboard for bringing one on a boat. I will never understand why people seem determined to fuck up a good good custard by putting bananas in it. Gawd, of all the wonderful things you can do with a custard why bananas? Just eeew.

          “nanner puddun” Bleah.

  15. It’s hard for me to drink craft beer without feeling pretentious. I mean some of it is good but it’s the scene that I don’t like. Same as there is nothing wrong with fitness but the Crossfitters are unbearable. But I’ll be in the mountains here in a few hours and am looking forward to some Lazy Hiker. That’s good stuff.

  16. You don’t have to buy the “Mexican” coke to get the real sugar. If you see a Coke with a yellow cap those are made as Kosher and use sugar over the HFCS.

Noon games get Sweet Tea, 3 and after games get Eagle Rare over a cube of ice and depending on the game how many I have.

  17. Buffalo Trace – usually straight on a big rock. But since it’s a noon kick, we’ll prob stretch it with some ginger ale and lime. As mentioned before – it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

    • This!

If you’re going to drink bourbon or whiskey…do it on a giant hunk of ice….I have Bull Dawg cube makers, for my sippin’ pleasures…and ever since, I can’t take the brown juice neat

  18. Sadly, and by sadly I mean thankfully, no more Jolt Cola. Jolt & Jim Beam was my Tailgate libation – thanks to an interview with ZZ Top back in an issue of Rolling Stone from the mid 80’s that did a big article on Mean Bean’s (Downtown) customer of the week for life Greg Lemond lol

  19. It will probably be a Bloody Mary circa 9am. thanks for doing this by the way, much appreciated by more people than you probably realize!

  20. If we are talking connoisseur cola, it is hard to beat a grape or peach Nehi from a glass bottle. Makes me feel 8 years old again, riding in my Dad’s old Ford F-100.

  21. Noon kick will definitely be a Bloody Mary garnished with pickled shrimp and candied bacon.

After victory drink, Rare Breed Wild Turkey over a single ice sphere.
    Everyone enjoy the long weekend

    Go Dawgs

auburn sucks to infinity & beyond.

  22. I am a pretentious craft beer drinker. I prefer sours, Gose or Berliner Weisse. My cooler will be stocked with 8 different beers every Saturday when toe meets leather for a UGA football game. Usually 6 IPAs, Tropicalia & Sweetwater IPA most of the time. Then 18 sours mixed in. 3 of each flavor. I don’t drink a whole case in a day so, that’s usually my weekend cooler stock.
