Between that and the fact that every other fan base hates both schools, and people weren’t interested in hate watching 2 teams where there wasn’t a rooting interest on the other side.
Having a team that most of the country dislikes can be good for viewership but, 2 teams most of the country dislikes isn’t.

Rust Belt battles, especially between two programs many more people dislike than like, typically don’t interest viewers outside the Rust Belt. (Okay, ND does have a national following but it’s literally parochial.)

It wasn’t that less people watched (I didn’t), it’s that 20 million still did (and always will) and they’ll ride that into the ground and just make fewer eyes the loss leader for the whole thing. Look for some sort of spin that thanks to streaming, everybody in the history of everybody were actually watching it twice at the same time.
Also, when the ratings get lower it will be the “Fans'” “Fault.” The WorldWideLeader cain’t fail, they can only be failed.
As much as those assholes hyperventilate about “national brands” and all that shit, nobody outside those two fan bases is interested in watching those teams. For the first time in my life I didn’t watch the NC.
