As we get closer to a month since we lost our beloved Senator (the only beloved Senator ever?), it’s dawned on me that this whole Refugees thing might be real. So, I says to myself, I says, self! You might want to start getting serious about some of this writing. And, as I’ve already said in the comments, Musical Palate Cleanser is mine. So, all you volunteers, find another niche! lol
So, I remembered that we just recently lost Toby Keith. I know there’s trepidation in some circles towards country music, and that’s fine. But, when a song is a great song, it transcends its genre and just stands on its own. Mr. Keith’s first hit was:
Now, any red-blooded American male that hears “I should’ve been a cowboy, I should’ve learned to rope and ride, Wearing my six-shooter riding my pony on a cattle drive” will say to themselves, “self!, that sounds awesome. I should’ve been a cowboy, too!” Great song. That was my first introduction to Toby Keith. I never really followed his career and didn’t keep up with his music. But, he was very supportive of our troops and the United States. A Damned Good American.
There’s one more Toby Keith song I want to put in this MPC. It’s a track that has been a mainstay on our pontoon playlist:
Yeah, nothing better than sipping a cold beer while Toby Keith croons Red Solo Cup as we booze cruise around Lake Blackshear enjoying Southwest Georgia nature, weather and freedom!
So, Mr. Keith, I tip my red solo cup to you and I say… Go Dawgs!
Just be on the lookout for moccasins out on the dock. Those sneaky bastards will try to get ya! 😜
“Whiskey for my men, beer for my horses”…..
My kind of post…first of all, fuck CANCER!
I was a Toby fan because he seemed like a dude you like to have a few beers with (probably in a red solo cup)
His ‘As good as I once Was’ might be a mantra for more than 6 of us on this blog
https://youtu.be/ldQrapQ4d0Y
His only true original sin was discovering Taylor Swift which starting the rapid degradation of the nuclear family, societal norms, acid rain, acid reflux, and blah blah KC Chiefs
Frozendawg,
The older I get the better I was.
W, I hear ya, friggin glory days…for me, when I want to stroll down amnesia lane, instead of piles of uppers and downers, I just try to thread the needle of heart palpitations with a fistful of blue chew and packing nitrate pills under my tongue…you might temporarily lose your vision in your left eye, but it’s a hell of a ride
Bluechew… 🙂
“Stop running around the house with that thing! You’re gonna put somebody’s eye out!”
So that’s how Left Eye Lisa got her handle…nice!!
“That bitch is crazy”
What I loved about about Toby was that he was just a regular guy who was also a hell of a singer. You could listen to one of his songs and say “Yeah, I remember that. “
Who’s your Daddy? RIP Toby. In my hard rock college days I sneered at Willie, Waylon and whining country music. Sure, I had Hank Jr’s greatest hits and would sing along in a bar to All My Rowdy Friends but otherwise ignored the genre. But then a few years ago I watched Ken Burns’ long documentary on Country music and got immersed. Understanding the origins and legends shed light on just how diverse the genre is and how it’s as much a contributor to the blues rock I’m addicted to today. I hear the country vibe in SRV more clearly now. Chris Stapleton is a great mix of country and blues. I’m hooked now to modern country and happier for it.
But Beyoncé ain’t country. Pop music is so horrible now I can see why they cynically tried a crossover move. It does bring new blood to CM. Most won’t stay but there’s no denying it’s growing popularity and Toby Keith was one of the drivers of the crossover appeal from the authentic country side. Think I’ll go get a beer for my horses now.
And the iconic…I love This Bar…listen carefully on the tract and you can hear Dolly Pardon in the chorus at the end…she and Dwight Yoakam are in the video

“In the fetal position with drool on my chin
We broke down and smoked weed with Willie again”….
We don’t have anybody quite filling his niche right now. I will sure wish we did — classic country with realtime soul. Come back, Merle.
I’m a Sturgill Simpson fan…that dude has a mix of Waylon and Kris kind of sound

Daggum it, Ottis…you got me spiraling down a country music rabbit hole today…God bless ya,

Bill Fuckn Murray!
Yeah, the movie sucked ass…almost as bad as Ishtar
Me too. Chris Stapleton, Jason Aldean, Todd Snider, There’s a bunch of good stuff out there.
Midnight Train to Memphis….is BADASS.
Thanks for the recommendations. MPC has always broadened my listening experience.
RIP to one of the best modern country music guys … all of you have hit the highlights.
Without getting political, “brought to you courtesy of the red, white and blue.”
“Man, I played Augusta, and I played Pebble Beach
And one time at Sawgrass I shot 83
If I live long enough to be 88
I think I’ll celebrate it by shooting my age”…
Otis for POTUS! Great post! Great site!
A normal fella who could’ve fit in right here. RIP, Toby.
Great stuff Otis! Toby was truly a Great American and he will be sorely missed!
Saw Toby Keith at a good size country bar in Dallas around 1998. Put on a really good show. The ladies were all over him.
Love Musical Palate Cleanser. Nice work!
I always loved “I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I never was ”
RIP Toby!
You know what they say about us pontoon captains, right?
We’re just like regular captains…only drunker.
Instead of the playpin…”Captains Lounge”…#Tightlines!
OD – great MPC and my first introduction to Toby Keith. I quickly learned to love his music and too many great songs to pick a favorite, but this song is still special to me. RIP to my favorite country legend.
