Monday Musings: Freddy Goes to Dollywood

For those of you who were following the social media wanderings of Freddy, the German World Cup fan (or American PsyOp, depending on the minerals in your hat) who visited America and fell in love with the things we consider mundane or perverse, like Waffle Houses, Ella Langley, or Alabama. What a delightful tale it was.

Well, Freddy is coming back…this time, to partake in the legend he heard that is College Football.

Of course he says other sports, so he may be able to see some NFL games, some college basketball games, but let’s face it, for the timing, he’s heading to college.

So for today’s musings, where would you direct Freddy for the BEST college football gameday experience? To make it interesting, let’s not play homers and suggest a Georgia game. Georgia versus WKU wouldn’t make for a memorable experience. Oklahoma at Georgia might, but there are other experiences out there that might trump the Athens gameday experience.

Night games at Baton Rouge.

Ohio State at Texas? Or “The Game”?

A game at Notre Dame?

Alabama versus Auburn.

The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is off the table, since it’s not in Jax this year and won’t be for a couple of years.

So where would you point someone for a purely otherworldly college football experience? Why?

  1. A night game at LSU for sure and the Iron Bowl. Texas vs. Oklahoma would be a good choice as well. Outside the SEC I would think a game at Notre Dame and a white out at Penn State would be required.

How about Southern vs Gambling and taking in the Battle of the Bands? I’d probably toss in a good match up at Oregon too. Then I would suggest ending his tour with the Army/Navy game.

  2. If UGA football vs kentucky was good enough for (then) Prince Charles, UGA football vs wku should more than qualify for Freddy…nike tells Freddy….Relax, just do it…GO DAWGS!!

  3. You think most Americans realize that Freddy has a German flag, but a pic of Ronaldo (Portuguese) on his profile? Just didn’t make sense to me, especially for the World Cup. Anyway, I would send him to TX vs OU at the Texas state fair. The European mind could not comprehend football and tailgating dropped into the middle of a beer fest.

    • Most Americans probably don’t know who Ronaldo is. But from what I know about soccer fans, they are fans of individual players. Doesn’t mean he was supporting Portugal over Germany.

  4. Go to Virginia Tech vs anybody and stay for the player entrance. Then leave. Best entrance music in the world.

  5. Depends – best football experience of the game or best overall experience with fans pregame, tailgating, and post game? If it’s the latter he can go almost anywhere in the SEC and have things to write home about. Any SEC home game in Knoxville will be memorable one way or another with a side trip to Dollywood. Auburn-Alabama even if they both suck. The Egg Bowl is bound to be memorable especially if it’s in Oxford. Of course Baton Rouge. And I don’t see any reason to exclude Athens.

  6. If Freddy is on a tight budget and likes 4 tickets, 4 drinks, and 4 hotdogs at a sparsely attended game with few students, I know exactly where to send him. He can even cosplay as a stormtrooper for the empire.

  7. I would only send him to great games with the additional benefit of seeing American coeds in their Saturday best. That means nowhere in the Big 10 other than Oregon or USC.

    • For coeds he should see USC v UCLA. The football will probably suck but it’s at the Rose Bowl this year so he gets an iconic stadium and the November weather should be the best in the country.

  8. I’ve done a lot of traveling in my life. If you want to see pretty girls, you can’t beat Athens, GA in the fall. I attended UGA pre Hope when Athens was on a completely different level than anywhere else in the universe. Now it’s merely got the prettiest girls you can imagine .

  9. Georgia at Alabama. The Quad is second to the Grove as far as I’ve experienced. Athens is still better for me, but Tuscaloosa knows how to party.
