Man, this is just…just weird, and possibly unnecessary.
If you get right down to it, though, LSU is within their rights to give the jersey number to any athlete, as they have made this a public facing policy.
LSU has retired the jerseys of four of its former players — halfback Billy Cannon (No. 20), defensive back Tommy Casanova (No. 37), halfback Jerry Stovall (No. 21) and running back Charles Alexander (No. 4) — and plans to retire former quarterback Bert Jones’ No. 7 jersey on Nov. 14.
However, LSU’s current policy regarding jerseys being retired, which is published on its athletic department website, states that any number retired after Jan. 1, 2007, “does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach.”
The No. 20 jersey made famous by Cannon, who was the team’s first Heisman Trophy winner in 1959, is the only number that can’t be worn again by a football player.
The jersey numbers worn by former LSU basketball stars Bob Pettit (No. 50), Pete Maravich (No. 23) and Shaquille O’Neal (No. 33) and former Tigers baseball coach and athletic director Skip Bertman (No. 15) have also been permanently retired in their respective sports.
The LSU policy states that an athlete must have completed competition for five years before being nominated for jersey retirement, and he or she must have “demonstrated truly unusual and outstanding accomplishments, such as winning a Heisman Trophy or National Player of the Year award and should be based on the total LSU career.”
In the cease and desist letter sent to Ausberry, attorney Adam Kenner noted that Daniels’ contract with LSU permitted the school to use his name, image and likeness for 180 days beyond his final game in college.
“Accordingly, LSU must immediately cease and desist from any further issue use, display, publication, distribution, promotion, commercialization, or other exploitation of Mr. Daniels’ NIL in any manner or medium,” Kenner wrote. “Any use of Mr. Daniels’ NIL occurring after LSU’s receipt of this notice will be deemed knowing and willful and will be pursued vigorously through all available legal and equitable remedies, without further notice.”
Funny, the only thing I can remember about Daniels is this:

Maybe he should’ve changed his number to 1, instead.
What a douche. Was he there just 2 seasons? He came from Arizona State correct?
If I’m LSU I say, ” you got it champ” and take down any reference to him in the football facility. Just act like he never played there. Not in the media guide or anything.
If I’m LSU I’d say “you got it chump” what a turd!
Not a great look for Daniels but just a sign of the times for the mindset of the majority today’s athletes.
Think of Christian Miller.
The jersey including the number belongs to the school. The school has the right to retire any number it would like. I hope someday when Kirby no longer is coaching, UGA takes the number 16 out of circulation and his name and number go up on the Sanford Stadium façade with Sinkwich, Trippi, Sapp and Walker.
There’s a reason many of us still believe the name on the front of the jersey is a hell of a lot more important than the name on the back.
Jayden Daniels may think he’s bigger than the LSU football program. He’s probably getting ready to find out he isn’t. Oh, yeah. By the way, the Leprechaun left him in games that were no longer in doubt to run up stats that got him that trophy.
Deion should look at LSU’s criteria for retiring a jersey. That is how it’s done. Also, Jayden Daniels is a baby.
Let’s take a look at the jersey (without him in it) and break it down:
NAME: Nope
IMAGE: No (unless his picture is on it)
LIKENESS: Nada (unless maybe a carricature artist drew his picture)
In this case I’d say the cork socker has nary a leg to stand on.
Feeling conflicted on this. Total dick move by Daniels and his money-grabbing advisers but we’ve come full circle on the original problem that SAs were being exploited and now got their NIL rights. Rather than reform the system the greedy overlords just agreed to have some of the money thrown around and now the monsters they’ve created are biting back. It’s all going to come crashing down anyway so why should we care?
Sounds like JD is just hunting for another check from LSU. And writing checks is one thing LSU excels at.
Not a serious Quarterback. His college jersey number has absolutely nothing to do with him hitting a hot route when a blitzer is coming in uncovered – that’s his job now and he needs to worry about keepin his current jersey number.
Maybe he oughta check with Jalon Carter and thank him for still being able to play. Such a douche!!
Could have been Jordan Davis. I lose track with those 2!! Both DGD’s!! Years do make a difference!! Go Dawgs!!
It was Carter who made him his personal trophy.
Look at me! Look at me! No one is looking at me!
The constant me, me, me from athletes is disgusting and off putting. A little humble would go a long way in making these idiots more palatable. My loss of caring has begun much more quickly than I’d anticipated and honestly I’m not sure how much longer I will care at all. Something that 10 years ago was unthinkable.
I’ve always thought that college athletes should be able to work, sell their: autographs, rings, jerseys, etc., but I will NEVER agree that they schools should PAY them to play! That makes them employees vs students and that is NOT how it’s supposed to be.
Their rules remove any doubt about who’s right. Maybe LSU should just mail him a copy of their rules that cover jersey retirement. Then ad a PS STFU.
What a bitch move…
