Huddle Up 2/28/2024

Good morning. The 2024 spring practice schedule has been announced. Georgia will hold 12 practices TU-TH and 3 scrimmages on Saturdays in the spring session beginning March 12 and will close it out with G-Day on April 13 (still no time or TV info available). UGA’s Pro Day will take place March 13.

More on the Coley hire from Benjamin Wolk’s article yesterday:

Coley brings a tenacity to recruiting that will make him one of Georgia’s best recruiting weapons on the offensive staff immediately. As a cherry on top, this was also a big blow to South Carolina who’d moved several things around on their own to bring Coley in.

Was that some sort of cannon shot at the chickens?

In spring sports, the Diamond Dawgs moved to 8-0 with a win yesterday over Presbyterian 4-3.

Since arriving at UGA, Kirby Smart holds a record of 94 wins and 16 losses. A 6-0 start in 2024 would get him to win #100 on October 12 in Athens versus Missy State.

Go Dawgs!

    • 1st year “Process Acclimation” losses, plus a couple of brain-farts along the way, CKS would be at 100 “W’s” by now…here’s to CKS’s next 100 “W’s” in whut say, 6 years…GO DAWGS!!

    • For me it depends on the time of the game. I’d like to bring my son but, he has a “schedule” with his injury that he has to stick to. So, I can’t decide right now.

    • Any of you, ,Not My, MWO, Skeptic, et.al., park at East Campus Deck(Ramsey)?

  1. The Coley hire is actually pretty fascinating. Most of us were really down on him because he was a really incomplete OC. Not ready for prime time. Who knows if he will ever be as far as being the play-caller. But he seemed fine as a position coach and certainly can recruit like crazy, which also is why Beamer wanted him so bad.
Kirby is thinking ahead of all of us. Again.

    • Work is work, Coach Coley isn’t in the resume building process, knowing/seeing/experiencing whut CKS has built plus the direction of UGA football, who the fuck wouldn’t want to be associated with UGA football (if you are comfortable with being uncomfortable, UGA football just might call you)…GO DAWGS!!

    • Absolutely gotdam correct, Doggoned. Most HC jobs, and let’s face it y’all, most leadership positions, are filled with folks that aren’t truly qualified. Kirby is the rare one who is qualified and willing to learn more.

    • it’s a two for one. It helps us in rectruiting, and it makes it a little harder for Beamer when we just take one of his guys who can recruit.

      I like it.

  2. The more I think about the Coley re-hire it says a lot about CKs and his relationships. James Coley was let go after one season as OC. He had a job at South Carolina and still came back to Athens. Of course living in Columbia vs. living in Athens would change my mind, too, but maybe not if there were lingering tensions.

  3. This will always be a sore spot for this person, with the huge success/integrity UGA tennis has built thru the years the way the previous ad, who was a team manager, treated/neglected those hollowed grounds known as Henry Field/ Dan Magill Tennis Complex and the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Tennis Facility which encompasses the ITA men’s HOF, that guy can and will always Kiss My Ass…GO DAWGS!!

    • I agree totally. The fact that McGoofity was a tennis letterman under Magill makes even worse. The guy should have his name stricken from the lettermen’s record.
Hunt has big shoes to fill, but so did Manny. Let’s hope the success continues.

      • Womens basketball, gymnastics, and tennis. 3 things the DAWGS were dominate in (I’m sure there are others I have neglected to mention). Now they are just afterthoughts. How they let them slide that far is a crime.

        • it really started to slide under Czar Mike and his henchman, the Lord of the Red Panties. McJughead was a huge disappointment, and he did nothing to stop the slide in sports where we were elite under Coach Dooley. He seemed much more interested in protecting his own hide by doing whatever Mike wanted than he was in improving the department. Good riddance to him.

          • Two things can always be true….”Friends don’t let friends attend the barn”…peoples that actually have accepted a transaction, into their personal checking accounts from FU cannot, under any circumstance be trusted…EVAH!!

      • Coach Hunt is up to the task for UGA mens tennis, crootin’ don’t bother him…GO DAWGS!!…for my monies, Coach Bernstein may have had a bigger shadow to follow and he’s better than advertised…GO DAWGS!!

      • I read Coley/UGA had to pay USCum a buyout of just under $half million. Coley isn’t simply a placeholder in Kirby’s view.

        • Regardless of how we all felt about him as an OC, there never was any doubt about his recruiting ability, especially the talent rich South Florida area. Over the last few years (since he left), we have had more misses than we have hits when fishing in that talent pool. As usual, Kirby identified the problem and has done what it takes to fix it.

  4. Shane Beamer seems to me to be a good guy and a good coach. Except for the huge fact that he coaches a god-awful rival, I’ve got nothing against the man.

However . . .Stealing Coley from him after all his gyrations to make a place for him on staff has me picturing Beamer as Charlie Brown whiffing on the kick where Kirby yanked the ball away at the last second. Kirby’s stone cold – – love it.

    • agreed! Beamer is kind of a goober, but I like his energy. I dont have any personal animosity against him. But if we roughed up Dan Lanning, who I think was pretty universally loved in Athens, there’s no reason not to rough Shane up every chance we get. It isn’t personal. It’s just SEC Football.

  5. I’m also inclined to give CKS abundant benefit of the doubt with CJC rehire. Agree with everything said.

Off topic, but I no longer can view comments on OG GTP. Anyone else?

Love the continuity here and will chime in whenever I have anything intelligent to add (so likely rarely).

    • IF I put in GTP it takes me here. If I enter Blutarsky.wordpress.com, it takes me to the OG (just did it now) and lets me view all the old post and comments. Kind of a bittersweet thing to do.

On a much happier note, OTIS has started a snowball rolling down the hill that keeps growing and gathering momentum. Like I said before, he fed all the strays and now they will be impossible to get rid of.

      • I dont think the Senator would object to the community continuing on after him. I think he would have liked it, and maybe even been a little curious to see how it shakes out. I admit I like the idea of a banner showing Kirby and Ludacris, or Quevo, as kind of a demented homage to the Dooley/JB banner. New times, new people.

        • I suspect the Good Senator would be proud to see his creation continue as long as it does not devolve into what so many blogs do. He put up some pretty firm but reasonable boundaries that kept us in check. We were almost all guilty of stepping over the line from time to time (some more than others) and having to have our knuckles rapped by him. If OTIS keeps us in check like that, may this blog live in perpetuity.

        • I think there is a place for the Dooley/JB banner to honor the Senator, but should this be where GTP evolves, the banner should evolve too.

          • can the Dooley/JB banner head the new Lexicon page? Or maybe a tribute page to the Senator as the Founder?

That would seem to acknowledge the original, while allowing an updated banner reflecting Kirby’s position as the modern top Dog. I think Coach Dooley would be cool with it. Saw him and Kirby on the MBS field before the Oregon game, it seemed to me there was genuine respect and even affection between them. Just an idea.🙂

      • I checked in over there earlier and it seems the comment link has been taken down. If this is what happened, our time adding comments is over. I’m warming up to this site so all will be well but it’s sad that GTP is over. All good things must come to an end. Go Dawgs!

    • “…whenever I have anything intelligent to add (so likely rarely).”
Man, don’t be so hard on yourself!! It doesn’t stop anyone else here!

      • I make dumb comments like it was my job. If you’re a good Bulldog and you have at least some manners, jump in!🤣
