Ole Miss was being coached up by a staff in flux between Oxford and Baton Rouge…and now that they’re one step closer, Lane’s pulling the guys back in.
Running backs coach Kevin Smith won’t return for the Rebels’ game Thursday in the Fiesta Bowl against No. 10-seed Miami, according to 247Sports, while offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. is likely “the only one of the main LSU assistants” to continue with their former team the rest of the postseason.
One has to wonder if that’s more about the timing of the portal opening or if it’s about Joey Freshwater’s fragile ego. I’m guessing he thought there was no way Golding could beat Kirby Smart in just his second game as a head coach, right?
Now that Pete Golding is making him look even worse. No chance Lane isn’t trying to put his finger on the scale.
I’m pulling for Mississippi to win it all so Joey will forever regret his decision.
What a douche.
I’m insulting feminine care products by comparing them to Lane Kiffin.
Yes, yes you are.
What’s astounding to me is the level of play Ole Miss has displayed amid this coaching uncertainty. At least one Dawg blog (not this one) had me believing Rebels were discombobulated and easy prey for Dawgs last week due to coaching chaos. Not so much. Still, I’m asking if Rebels can play with the rage/anger they displayed against us last week—for two more games.
But doncha know football is played by a guy in a head set moving largely fungible pieces around on a gridiron versus an opposing guy in a head set doing the same?
There is no room for something called “players” having any outcome determinative role in this “couch coordinator” model of football.
Its all jes coachin’!
(As an aside, do you know who is really bad at it? Bobo.
And do you know who lacks the discernment, judgement and/or courage necessary to rid us of this plague? Kirby Smart.)
Joking aside, if giving Laner the shoe pays off it will be because it gave that team a mental edge, something like a “lover scorned” energy, to play above themselves.
I know Ill be pulling for them to shock the world.
I stayed away from anything CFB related for a few days. This one really hurt. The second half of the SB was dismaying for a myriad of reasons. It’s good to be back seeing the pithy comments again, but damn that one hurt.
Unfortunately, in the last three years, our inability to win a QF game (the 2023 SECCG we lost to Bama was a de facto QF) has gone from a small speed bump that has grown rapidly to a major hump blocking Kirby from that elusive third natty. Heaven knows I’m not writing off a 12-2 club that won the SEC as a crap year. I’m proud as hell of what this club accomplished—-BUT there’s part of me that doesn’t want to see us in the Sugar Bowl any time soon, either!
I don’t think it’s just Kiffin wanting those coaches back in Baton Rouge. LSU is already paying Kiffin $500,000 for the quarterfinal win. They’ll owe him $750,000 if Ole Miss makes the championship game, and $1,000,000 if Ole Miss wins it all. Do you think the LSU administration likes the idea of helping one of their historical rivals win a championship and paying $1 million for that privilege?
Additionally, for a coach like Kiffin who works the portal, this two week period is one of the most important times of the year. Do you also think LSU administrators and Kiffen want to lose out on transfers because some of their recruiters are helping Ole Miss?
