This reminded me of the Montana Project, kind of. A whole wall of Montana high school football teams and not one “G” like Georgia’s or Green Bay.
Can definitely see the west coast college influence, and it makes sense with Montana having some Longhorn insignia just because, well, that’s Montana for you.
My high school mascot was the Bulldog, and we were even red and black…but we used a Gardner Webb bulldog and not G or anything because we were Mount Zion and a G wouldn’t make sense.
Curious as to your high school’s color schemes and mascots…did they have any collegiate or pro influence to their design? If so…any idea why? Also, does the high school game still have the same feel to it as it did back in the day? Is it the last hope for true football anymore given the changes in the college game?
I went to a certain north metro high school whose mascot is a yellowjacket and colors are yellow and black. That has never pleased me. At all. In fact, when the football team went to the state quarterfinals my sophomore year and the basketball team went to the state finals the year after I graduated, my cheering was limited to, “Go … you guys. Go!” I just couldn’t bring myself to yell, “Go Jackets!”
I went to Jonesboro before Mt Zion was a HS. Started out just like the Arizona cardinals. Coach Tomberlin (whom I don’t care for) changed to be just like Oklahoma whom he idolized. He ran the wishbone when he arrived and after 5-6 games the offense was totaled overhauled. Then Coach Hughes copied UGA, even the silver britches. After that Jonesboro became thugville and I have no idea what they wear. If I went back I’d wear a 9 mm and pray I made it home.
I moved over to Henry County in 1989 and went to MZ because my dad worked there. Decades later I was coaching baseball at Stockbridge and we had a game at Jonesboro and it was just a sad sight. Jonesboro was a nice school when I was a student in ClayCo, definitely not the same. We just had a db commit from there that backed off his commitment and my thought was “no big loss” considering.
Sylvan Hills Golden Bears. Black and gold. I’m guessing it was the Cal Bears? Not sure why, though.
They did play in the 1965 Milk Bowl and got beat by Dykes, 37-0. Dan Eckstein, the leader on the team was later drafted by the Packers but was the last guy cut. He wrote about it in “The 41st Packer”.
Later, William Judson played there and later started for the Dolphins for several years, including playing in the Super Bowl.
Ridgeland high in Walker county Georgia. Black and Silver we were are the panthers. Large block R like Rutgers. Then a Carolina panther head. Now they use the nitty lion, but our uniforms are pretty slick with white away with black helmets and pants. Home black jerseys and black pants with black helmets but now they do silver as well at home with silver jerseys and black pants with black helmets.
The Academy of Richmond County also known as ARC. Colors were purple and gold and mascot was a Musketeer. I think that stands today.
I graduated from Waycross High School in ’82. Our football team wore red and black and were also the Bulldogs. No insignia on the helmets. I think they were just red helmets with the black and white stripe on top. We won the state championship that year with Todd Williams as our quarterback. Even have a picture of Vince Dooley at that game in our yearbook, if I recall. Waycross High merged with Ware County High sometime in the ’90s. The old Waycross High is now a middle school, I think. Time flies, as they say.
I went Washington County HS in Sandersville, and we were the Golden Hawks. The logo was an interlocking W & C, with an attacking Hawk as the mascot. We weren’t good in football back in the 80s. Then they hired Rick Tomberlin as HC back in ’92, and went on a run & won 3 state titles in 4 years. That was due to having players like Robert Edwards (UGA), Takeo Spikes (AU), Terrence Edwards (UGA), Jessie Miller (UGA), Demetro Stephens (FSU), Jeremy Brett (FSU) & several others that played in college. So, unlike @Grantham’s Replacement, Coach T worked out well for us.
St. Pius X – navy, gold and white. ND? Makes sense. Also GT makes sense because it was in Alanner, and back in the 50s and early 60s they were a pretty good team. But being good went to their collective head and they went independent. Not a good idea in retrospect.
