A friend of mine (a Tech fan, not proud, but it is what it is) asked me in the midst of the 2022 season if it ever got old.
What? I said.
Georgia winning all the time, he replied.
Nah, man, it’s pretty fucking awesome, but gets more intense anytime there’s a threat to the streak.
Not to mention, beating Tennessee all these years have been nice, to say the least.
So what say you? Did you miss the days where Georgia struggled? Did you miss the intensity of trying to hunt, rather than being the hunted?
Discuss.
No, I pretty much like us being elite. I’ve always thought we were knocking on the door during the late 90’s and most of the Richt era, save a few seasons, but the Smart reign and the years following the pandemic have been the reward for many years of struggle since the Herschel days, and now I never want to return to good but not great again. The risk is becoming spoiled, arrogant, and entitled, but still think it far outweighs the alternative. I’m also still having a great time and every win is appreciated so nothing has changed other than I just feel less bitter and downtrodden throughout the season, as well as less delusional during the offseason. That’s all for the Turds and Bowels now!
Hell to the MFing NO.
What a dumbass question from a loser.
I don’t miss it at all. I’m thoroughly enjoying our success. Although my Inner Munson that developed during Goff’s Reign of Terror still comes out from time to time. He’s like that little devil sitting on my shoulder, telling me that it’s all about to go to $hits any minute.
That being said, we never struggled in the sense that Tech has. A bad season for us under Richt would be cause for a contract extension and massive raise at Tech.
The truth for me is that when you’re on top only bad shit can happen on Saturday.
In short, (nearly) every week can become like playing tech. You don’t celebrate winning as much because it so damn expected. Losing, however, is a terrible tragedy.
I do miss the days of being big underdogs and trying, and occasionally succeeding, to “slay the dragon.”
If you find Tennessee week as intense as it was in the 1990’s, when we got beat 9 times in a row, I don’t know what to say to you.
But kicking their asses 8 times in a row IS preferable. I ain’t asking to go back, but being on top is a different animal to be sure and some dramas that you used to be able to count on like Florida, Auburn, Tennessee can, and have at times, become “ho hum.”
An expanded conference and playoffs though will give us more than enough opportunities for big moments every season. So tell Mr. River of Piss that we all envy his team’s inescapable vortex of sucktitude and to never ever change.
And fwiw, I can’t say that I come into 2025 thinking we have 10 or more wins in the bag. This is the first time since 2016 that I thought we could be in for a really bumpy road.
“Mr. River of Piss,” classic!
Derek, I too find crushing our rivals thoroughly enjoyable, yet expected these days. Especially Tennessee. Most, not all, Vol fans are extremely obnoxious and insufferable.
We also have the same expectation heading into this season. The questions along the lines of scrimmage have me the most concerned. I do not see a spot on the O-line, nor D-line, that is improved from last year. As for QB, we really have zero idea who or what Stockton is. Why are you expecting a bumpy road?
Fuck no I don’t miss it.
This is how much I don’t miss it; last year felt like failure.
Failure and not meeting expectations are 2 different things. That’s my opinion. Anyone who really believed we were going win 3 in a row in the playoff with a 2nd team QB, a set of WRs who had problems catching a cold, a running back who couldn’t stay healthy and one who couldn’t consistently hang on to the ball, a beaten up offensive line and a defense that wasn’t as fundamentally sound as it had been didn’t know what to expect.
If we had lost to Penn State, Ohio State or even Tennessee instead of Notre Dame, would you feel the same way? I think that’s what sticks in everyone’s craw … ND wasn’t better than us … they were better than us that day.
I still think about the fact that this team picked themselves up off the mat in Atlanta and won an SEC championship against Texas on gut and determination. They went into Austin and pulled the anointed ones’ pants down in front of 100,000 and the CFB world. They fought like hell on the high wire for most of the season after losing a heartbreaker to Alabama.
That’s why I said it felt like a failure and not that it was a failure. And nobody knew our receivers wouldn’t be able to catch etc etc until the season was underway. The team that beat the shit out of Clemson didn’t seem like a team that was unreasonably expected to possibly go for another title. Good talk.
Sorry if I offended.
Naw I’m not offended at all. Just pointing out you kinda went off half cocked. It’s the internet. It happens.
What sticks in my craw is that we got “out efforted.” When you’re losing the physical and mental game to ND, you are failing. If that had been the first loss of the season, it would be failing. That can’t happen with that opponent on that stage in a win or go home situation.
The good news is that Kirby saw exactly what I saw: guys who were fat, happy and comfortable. He’s put that shit on notice.
I don’t think being soft mentally or physically will be tolerated any longer. I’d rather throw 22 untalented guys out there who play with their hair on fire than a bunch of talented prima donnas worried about when they’re getting their hair and nails did.
Sugar Bowl was such an anomaly, hard to blame one thing… Terrorist attack, Kirby’s dad, dopey walk-on running down the sidelines, new QB and punter. We win in the regular season for sure.
Ohio State was peaking at the end so that would have been a tough one. I still wish we made the playoffs previous year to beat cheater Wolverines
Not sure about that. We showed up in Tuscaloosa and Oxford flat and we needed tech to implode to get that W. We were down 14 with 5:37 to play against tech.
There were some ominous signs before we got to NOLA.
Hey, I wanted to believe we could win it. Ohio St was unstable though. I say that with all due contempt.
I don’t miss it a bit. For me, it doesn’t get old.
I finished my time at Georgia with the 1990 season. That’s real suckage. It was downright embarrassing.
My only hope is that we don’t become Bammers with their sense of entitlement – championship or bust. You want to run Kirby off? That would be the way to do it by holding him to an unreasonable standard.
It’s what made Spurrier decide to try the NFL after Handbag fans complained when they didn’t score 50+ and beat people by 30+ every game when they didn’t do crap before he came to Hogtown.
Avoiding entitlement? Assuming we will just show up and win? Complacency? All bad. Wanting to win, being willing to keep grinding and earning it? Kirby is all about that, we should be, too.
We beat Bama!
Asking stupid questions with obvious answers about winning and domination? At Georgia Tech, YOU CAN DO THAT!
Seriously, who would ever get tired of winning? Who could even suspect you might get tired of winning? I don’t miss not winning. If anything, I want to win more decisively. FTMF.🙂
Okay, that made me laugh hard. Thanks.
uh no.
Having endured the mid-80s through the 90s, our current level of winning is that much sweeter. The hard times are what make you really appreciate the good ones. I bet those Tech guys are pretty damn tired of losing though.
If I could go back in time I’d go to homecoming 1994 and I’d make an announcement on the PA with about 2 minutes to play that at the end of the game, we’re going to take roll.
And if you’re still watching on TV, take a photo of the screen and send it in with your name and contact info.
Those who hung onto the bitter fucking end then would have had a special “VIP” party and celebration in Indy.
The Ride or Die Club. All bandwagoners to be shot on sight!!
Oh man, I stayed for that debacle, and it was baaad. Auburn upset Florida during that game, and folks around me were cheering like we had been the ones to beat the Gators.
Of course, they didn’t stay to see us lose that day
Spectators leave. Fans remain. I’ve been saying that to people that leave early since 1979.
No, doing bourbon tastings in the 4th quarter with my best friends as we lay and epic beatdown on TCU in the nation championship game never ever gets old!
Nope. I enjoy it. I guess the only thing you could miss would be the great upsets that Dooley could pull off sometimes, but winning >> losing. (I put that so that your Tech friend could understand.)
I’ve enjoyed ’21, ’22, and ’23. ’22 post Natty buzz and you know sooner or later a loss will happen but it didn’t that season. I don’t think the winning streak added any stress. If anything, it was less.
’23: the Bama loss was a bit easier to take with the previous 2 seasons but at the same time, UGA was a play away from beating Bama which IMO was the national title game. So the loss still stung. Further it was Bama, I hate them. LSU with a lightning in a bottle QB would have been easier to accept.
’24 was irritating not so much in the record but I saw old problems enter the picture again, OL and WRs under performing, turnover and an OC that gets predictable. I don’t want to go back to the UGA game random loss becoming expected. UGA didn’t play 4 qtr games last season. WLOCP should have been over in the middle of the 3rd but turnovers happened, GT shouldn’t have gone to OT. Kentucky a 1 point win? Great teams can have an off day but not that often.
It is all the more irritating as the program has the resources to be more. UGA has the facilities, fan base, and money to be in the national picture just as Bama has been. Bama had 2 loss regular seasons under Saaban but they were the exception. Was last season an exception or a return to struggling to be a contender?
Now who in their right mind would say: I’m so tired of winning I hope we lose this game. LOL!
But I have sat through every one in Sanford, good and bad.
I think winning it all in ’21 took all the stress out of being a Georgia fan, especially given the follow up in ’22. It’s all gravy from here, because we know how to be a fan even when we’re not as good as we should be. In my mind, that’s what separates Dawgs from Bammers or Gators!
No … while I may long for the youthful days of wines, whiskies and roses when I matriculated at the best bars and nightspots offered in the greatest college town in all of the world circa late ’80’s and early ’90’s, that does not include the end of career Dooley years or the Ray Goff era editions of Bulldog football.
For me it is not just that we are winning, it is the Kirby Smart brand of football that makes it enjoyable. Disciplined, physical, and relentless teams that has made all of our close rivals succumb in humbling fashion.
Agreed I may miss Athens in the 80s and 90s. I do not miss the underachieving teams. Further, all of the SEC college towns have changed. I have enjoyed UGA’s improvement.
Since he’s a tech fan expecting to win every week is less likely to happen for him than inventing scaleable cold fusion. He was smart enough to know who to ask.
I will add losing still hurts more than winning feels good. Glad we have Kirby Smart who excepts nothing less than more than you know your capable of.
No, I’m not jaded or complacent or feeling entitled. Winning is difficult, and still very, very satisfying.

I graduated in 89 so I spent years as a fan of teams that were somewhere between not good to almost great. I loved Richt for moving and us forward and putting us in that “almost” category. But nothing compares to the Kirby years of being consistently great. I’m so glad I was alive to see the golden years of Georgia football.
Only a Tech fan can ask that question with a serious face.
