From the Hargrett Library:
Can you see the reduction in tailgating areas we used to use back in the 90s? I’m not sure if you could see the dollar signs pop up in a few of the former parking lots, along with where the RVs used to park by the Coliseum starting around Thursdays. I personally used to get excited on Thursdays when I’d visit Snelling and see the tailgaters already showing up for the weekend game.
Those were the days…
Misty water-colored memories…
Do love me some Sanford Stadium on Saturdays with 92,000 of your closest friends…GO DAWGS!!
Some curious folks might love to learn what the percentages of sq footage of new construction on campus since 1990 broken down by student learning/development, student services, administration. It’s that last category that has me wondering how disproportionate the percentages may be.
I don’t think much of the new construction is for administration. Most of the construction that I recall reading about is for dorms, dining halls, sports venues and research/teaching facilities. Not necessarily in that order.
If I look closely, I can see myself skipping class…
When I graduated in ’92 they had just announced the plans to buy up the fraternity houses on River Rd. to make room for the new Ramsey Student Center. I think it took another 2-3 years to finish it.
When I took my oldest daughter to tour UGA about 20+ years later, the nice student tour guide bragged about how they had just finished remodeling the old, dated Ramsey. And I felt even older than I was…
I watched all but one football game from the tracks before they closed in the stadium. Fun times. Great memories. Lots of bourbon and a few fights. Smoked a couple of cigars up there with Erk on Friday nights. Now I’m old and cranky.

Fixed this morning.
I was a freshman in Fall ‘88 living in Hill Hall and taking my lumps in the Redcoats. Being fully aware of the football schedule I was always really amped when I saw people parking all over the place starting on Thursday’s. They would engulf my dorm and the surrounding dorms. The band room used to be right under the Tate Center. Great times were had by all and I know it’s a LOT different now. Tate, the old Fine Arts building, and my core classes up the hill towards the Main Library were my daily jaunts, we ate in the O’House dining hall.
I marched in 93 and 94, and almost forgot about the band room next to Tate. Man, what an abomination considering the quality of the program, and glad they finally got better facilities after. When we had to practice in there you almost wished we were just outside in the 100 degree heat rather than being crammed in there!
