I think I had Lynyrd Skynyrd running through my head as I typed that.
Today’s the day where a five star quarterback makes his decision on his college of choice, and we are well aware that Oregon is all in on paying everything they can to secure a national championship. I won’t be at all surprised to hear that Curtis is about to be a Duck.
The tea leaves point to Oregon. Georgia has been making a hard push to secure Bowe Bentley out of Texas and also has their name in the pot with a few other high profile QB recruits, including Peyton Houston who just secured a Rivals MVP at this weekends camp.
Don’t know about you, but part of me doesn’t really care where Curtis goes. Five stars are fine and all, but the showcase QB hasn’t really been a staple of Smart’s success in Athens, so part of me feels like we’re fine regardless. The Senator typically didn’t follow the recruiting tales too much either…and I’ve also come to realize a commitment means little to nothing in today’s modern era of recruiting and portal movement.
Either way I believe we’ll be fine, but it’ll also be nice to close out this drama that’s been clotting up the news feeds for months now.
The whims of teenagers does not alter my day. It does affect other kids so it will make the rest of the class better for the school of his choice. Not like there’s history that says we need 5 star QB to win championships.
Should this QB truly be an Eagles man, most comfortable/developmental way to get to the next level Eagles is thru UGA football…GO DAWGS!!
I wouldn’t be surprised either way. Georgia is closer to home, and his mother has consistently wanted him at Georgia. If the NIL offer is remotely comparable, Curtis is in Athens. I can also see Oregon truly money-whip the family for him to go there, so it could be the heart wants Georgia and the head chooses Oregon. Regardless, I’m not going to care because a high 5-star QB hasn’t been necessary for our success.
My real question is when are all of these Nike schools going to realize they are subsidizing Oregon’s NIL budget (due to Phil Knight) and tell Nike to limit the money going to Oregon or we’ll all find new equipment partners.
Don’t they pay us for the right to use their uniforms?
You don’t think Nike makes more off the sales of Georgia merchandise with the swoosh on it than they pay for the ability to use the Georgia licensed trademarks? The profits off those sales from the group of Nike schools go to support Phil Knight’s ability to pour his money into the Oregon NIL collective.
That’s probably true, even if others make and sell UGA merch as well. It would be interesting to see those numbers.
It’s too bad Evoshield collapsed when they tried to expand into football. Having an Athens-based apparel company to use instead of Nike would have been a nice perk.
I’m all for dumping Nike just because of that stupid 1999 Microsoft Paint clip art dog they try to call a “Dawg”. Go back to Champion.
Yeah. I mean if we get him I won’t hate it. But if we don’t it’s not going to worry me for the reasons you mentioned.
This dipshit Florida State fan was crowing the other day and posted an article about Texas is the new SEC power player and Kirby can’t build teams the way he used to through superior recruiting cause NIL and portal. They’re shoveling dirt on Kirby and Georgia’s grave way too soon. I just wouldn’t bet against him figuring it out.
I guess that dummy didn’t realize Georgia finished 2nd in recruiting in 2025 and was a Justus Terry signing away from getting the #1 class again.
63-3 made us live in members’ of that fan base head rent-free.
going fwd, won’t a players commitment actually be binding due to NIL agreement?
in other words aren’t they going to be signing a contract(for at least 1yr)?
Who knows? If Oregon passes its proposed law to protect NIL deals under state-level student privacy laws, this whole thing implodes.
I’ve given up trying to figure this out. The NCAA has screwed this up so badly (intentionally in my mind) that the only thing to do now is to manage the decline.
Absolutely ee but throw in the courts for striking down what precious little the NCAA has tried to do (keep the old system intact) without a hint of what would be reasonable. I’m certainly not a lawyer, just seem to be that way to me.
When the NCAA started granting exemptions to the one-time free transfer by allowing a 2nd transfer and maintaining eligibility, they lost all control of the eligibility rules. The original SCOTUS decision struck down the amateurism rules but did not say the NCAA didn’t have the right to enforce its eligibility rules.
The NCAA does not make rules on a whim. The member institutions propose rules and the membership votes on them. The NCAA is an organization made up by the presidents of NCAA members.
I understand that. The original 1-time free transfer should have been a zero exception rule to tell student-athletes to use your 1 transfer without losing eligibility wisely. Instead, we got free agency.
Almost better he takes the duck money then portals back home in a year or two.
Bowie Bentley is a really good QB and will cost half as much. He plays against better competition here in Texas too. That’s where my money would be going. Curtis looks really good too, but not twice as good as Bentley.
Also, Houston is a 2027 recruit.
Given the Georgia track record of winning championships with an in-state starting QB (Carson Beck is the only out-of-state starting QB to win a championship at UGA in the modern era and it took an in-state Gunner Stockton to relieve him when injured), I would have rather seen UGA at least try to attract one of the Georgia blue chips over the last few years.
Outside of JuJu, who I know you wouldn’t have wanted here, I’m not sure any of the others are SEC starting material. But they certainly didn’t look a whole lot different than the guys we got.
I don’t know about JuJu. If he had come to Georgia not expecting a big NIL payday and wanted to compete for the starting job, I would have been totally fine with him. No doubt the kid is talented.
Kirby Moore was the starting quarterback for the 1966 SEC championship team and he was from Alabama.
No matter who he “commits” to today, that is subject to change (many times) between now and signing day. Even then, until they trot onto the field for the first game, you aren’t sure if they are going to bail on a whim.
The Curtis family has made it clear that his recruitment will shut down when he announces his selection. He will be fully involved in recruiting other targets to the school he selects.
Pretty good summary from Jeff Sentell:

Alright Alright Alright….
It’s Georgia.
The article said he picked Georgia because of the coaching staff, specifically Kirby and Bobo.
You wouldn’t be bullshittin’ now, would ya EET?!?(Hammer back)
Nope. The announcement is everywhere now. Dawgnation live streamed the announcement from his school.
