Countdown to Georgia Bulldogs Football, 20 Days

Good morning! Time is ticking, days are going by and UGA football is getting steadily closer. We’re 20 days out from opening day at Dooley Field in Sanford Stadium. Here at the Otis Day hacienda, the TV’s have been tuned up, oil changed and a fresh set of racing slicks have been bolted on. We’re ready! Are you!

For 20 days to go here’s card #120:

  1. James Ray was a good QB. What limited him was UGA signing home town hero Andy Johnson in 1970 (freshmen were not eligible in 1970 so Johnson’s first season was 1971.) Johnson was the starter (when not injured) the rest of Ray’s career.
HOWEVER, UGA played South Carolina in Ray’s hometown in 1971 and Johnson was knocked out of the game in the first quarter. Ray entered the game and ran for 151 yards (a record for a Georgia QB,) including an 84 yard touchdown run. That 84 yard run was at the time the 6th longest run by any position player in Georgia history.
Johnson got hurt again in 1972 and Ray played well in relief.
The information on the card is not accurate. 1970 was Ray’s sophomore season, not 1972. 1972 was his senior year.
