Your Friday Flashback: Sons of Italy

Memories. Hazy, hazy memories, but memories nonetheless.

Many a dollar, and I mean very little dollars, which made it even better, were spent here sitting on the railings outside on a Tuesday Friday after classes were done.

Happy Friday, Refugees. I hope you have a nice little place to spend your Friday afternoon at, and while away the hours with friends or family while you’re at it.

  1. Personally, I preferred Steverino’s, which was right next door, but Son’s had a full bar so were often packed with students. Steverino’s had chicken wings that were whole wings, draft beer in quart cups for about $3, mediocre pizza and an order of fries filled a paper plate.

  2. Steve’s guy, too. Nothing beat that first day of Spring when the sweaters disappeared and tee shirts and shorts appeared. Literally, would call the fellas (on landlines) and we’d stop what were doing (leaving work for the day) to sit on the deck and enjoy the Milledge Ave/Lumpkin St -um, strollers enjoying a sunny spring walk.

  3. Fall 1980. A big slice of pizza and a coke for $1.25 lunch special. It was a daily stop. They took checks.

  4. Steve’s marinated steak and cheese was legit. You had to let it sit in the foil until all the juices commingled add a pint and let the good times roll!

  5. Places like Son’s and Steve’s shielded all of us from reality for several years. Once you were out in the real world and away from Athens it was a shock what the real cost of a pitcher of beer and pizza slices actually were.

    • That’s why I am in the anti Shebear minority. I live in Athens, so I don’t have to pay Atlanta prices. My friends roll in, crash at GringoManor instead of a hotel for three nights, go out Downtown and re-live the spots and claim they make money on the weekend. It can still be done. Sometimes I even break out the Chuck Foreman Grill and it gets Old School fast

  6. I’m sure I had great times at SonsStock. I have no memories of those times, which is probably why they were great…
