Playing Roulette with the Portal

You’ve got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em. Say, here’s a Musical Palate Cleanser for you.

I did love me some Muppets. Anyway, here’s the point of the post:

One more reason now to be skeptical of using the portal to build your roster. The assumption with high profile players is that they’re seeking a bigger stage or a bigger paycheck, but as is the case with Sorsby, he may have been needing to find another town to live in.

The NCAA is investigating Sorsby’s gambling, according to sources, as the organization forbids athletes from betting on both college and pro sports.

Texas Tech said in a statement that the university “is committed to supporting Brendan through his recovery process and to ensure his long-term health and well-being.”

According to sources, Sorsby bet on Indiana football while redshirting for the Hoosiers as a true freshman in 2022, a season in which he played in a single game as a reserve. The bets in 2022, according to sources, were on Indiana to win and none came in a game in which Sorsby appeared.

Through various other sources, it appears Sorsby was gambling on a lot more than Indiana football, making several online small bets on summer baseball and many other sports. On one hand, yes, I feel for the guy and hope he gets help. On the other, I remember Gurley and A.J., and I feel a little less sorry. I’m sure the NCAA will intervene and likely rule him ineligible, but Texas Tech is left in a lurch. Their backup quarterback underwent ACL surgery and isn’t likely to play until the fourth or fifth game of the season. Dylan “Mahomes” Raiola is sitting on the bench in Eugene while wondering if there isn’t a petition he can sign somewhere to join the Texas Tech roster.

What is it they say…live by the sword, die by the sword? I hope that NIL defense is top-flight for the Red Raiders. Given that they play in the Big XII, they likely won’t need an offense, anyway.

  1. Sports gambling is going to be the addiction for this generation.

Not a good look for Texas Tech, but they play a joke of a schedule in a joke of a conference.

  2. I think I read where he was gonna get 5 million from TT. Gonna need it to pay off all those gambling debts! There is the caught and the not caught. Sad for college sports. Phones make it way too easy. Maybe the wise guys from ncaa can figure it out. Naaaah!

  3. Once again the adults embrace the vice then are shocked and punish the kids for participating. The NCAA jumped in bed with the gambling corporations even supplying injury info while telling the players not to bet…but ask how they’re feeling. ESPN dedicates entire pregame segments to point spreads and then runs PSAs to “Just say no.” How’d that work out in the 80s? Guess in 20 years we’ll discover the CIA was behind this too.

    • Not normally a rearview mirror guy but I seriously wonder how 19 yo me woulda navigated cellphone betting and Delta 9. Heyell, Monday 10 cent jager at O.Malleys, Tuesday Nickle Nite at Lowrey’s, Wednesday Zoo Night at T K Hardy’s, another Nickle Nite somewhere Thursday damn near did me in.

    • This just in from our sources, sponsored by FanDuel, we are now hearing that Brendan Sorsby will take a leave of absence immediately for gambling addiction. Oddsmakers are giving him a 70% chance at a quick recovery. We are praying for a quick recovery and hope he beats the odds, with -150 on the over and +100 on the under. If you or a loved one are struggling with a gambling addiction, feel free to participate in our free gambling leagues, at no charge at all, brought to you by BetMGM.

And now, let’s take it up to Mike, who is going to talk a little bit about Kirby Smart’s biggest nemesis, the spread. No, not that spread offense, but the points spread, that he so famously seems to lose to. Mike, take it away.

    • There exists a big difference in being in rehab vs witness protection, do to the fact Guido and Big Tony are out in the Caddy waiting to talk to you about your debt and how ya gonna satisfy that debt, not to mention the vig…GO DAWGS!!
