Can’t say I’m shocked, but here goes the yearly merry go round that is college basketball roster management. Wilkinson played well early, faded a little in the middle of the SEC schedule, but was the leading scorer on the team for many of our games.
With our bottom of the league NIL spending in basketball, I foresee this to be a repetitive experience for many years to come, unless we see a significant shift in prioritizing funding after the team’s back to back early departure from the NCAA Tournament.
UGA is effectively a mid-major in basketball. Just like teams like Akron, Santa Clara and Utah State, whenever they make it to the dance, they lose their top players to the portal. The administration is never going to treat this sport like anything more than an after-thought.
Actually, the chef’s kiss will be a player leaving us for more money at a mid major
Look at the production of last years contributing players on their new teams this year. Start with Silas Dimry and then go to R Godfrey.
It makes sense to leave for more money and better coaching.
I admit that I know less about basketball than most other college sports, but this doesn’t seem like a crisis to me. I’d be more worried if some of the younger players were bailing.
We are in CMR territory here. Either fund the program at a top 5 level or get a caretaker coach and cheap players. There really is no in between anymore. I’d actually opt for the caretaker approach for now and wait to see how things develop over the next 5 years with rules and regs. Don’t build a new facility unless Kirby needs that space.
And is Coach White the guy that’s going to ask for more or develop a plan to do more?
Nope. Go find our own young ‘un like we did with CMR.
We aren’t building a new facility.
SOL is an unfortunate name for a sports group.
Silas Demry, Jr. left UGA for a slot in the Final Four. He gave us 2 years and I don’t blame him leaving a potential bubble team for a starting spot atvUConn. Wilkinson has played for 2 teams in 2 seasons.
Wilkinson was our most consistent contributor (minus the stretch where he was injured). It would have been great to keep him but it was obvious he was frustrated by the terrible effort the team gave in the SEC and NCAA tournaments.
Bro shot 41% from field. Had a shit ton of turnovers. See ya (Iverson, Jr).
Now….can we get PeeWee to portal?
